I couldn’t ever listen to Doc. Just irritating. With Pierre it’s more the random things he says while the play is going on. Once you notice that he does it, it’s impossible to ignore.

Also the interviews with the coaches during the game is ridiculous. That’s gotta be beyond irritating for them.

I think coach's interviews at this point are commonplace, Pens do them for regular broadcasts, I would imagine others do as well, but I agree, it is probably irritating and you aren't ever going to hear anything surprising.  Would be awesome to hear, "Well, some guys were flat in the first period, especially Bob, so he's glued to the bench which should help us turn things around..."

  2. Wow, I just figured out that the circle or star takes you to the first unread post!  Seriously, I have been wondering why this interface didn’t have that and opening the thread at page 1 every time I wanted to see new content.

First world problem solved but solve nonetheless.

The idea is to have that something to strive for. Sure, the NBA would like the WNBA to be a money maker but there are other perks for supporting it. Having the WNBA gives young girls something to look up towards and can help to drive female participation and interest in the sport as a whole. That increased interest for the sport as a whole leads to increased viewership, ticket sales, and merchandising opportunities. Why wouldn't the NHL want to make that investment in their product?

I can't say for sure if we'd ever see a fully self-sustaining WNBA or WNHL, but then, most minor league hockey teams can't survive without assistance from the big club.

I dont know what the money situation is but even at the ECHL level you are getting a couple thousand people per game.  That investment to grow the game sounds good, but it awfully hard to trace a direct ROI and there is a considerable lag effect.  Not saying it isnt true, but that is a really low level of confidence for an investment.  There is already a lot of direct investment in youth hockey where girls are participating more and more.

  4. I can say not predatory from the standpoint of headhunting, but like the Wilson hit on ZAR last year, Anderson was already engaged with Chara and had no way to see that hit coming.  The hit was almost entirely to the head.

But you are right, there is no major for a hit that they claim to want out of the game, did that change?, no provision for a misconduct, but there is a match penalty.  Good job NHL.

  5. I have been trying both Thinees and Pearsox Ultralite for the past couple of months.  The Pearsox are 100% nylon, like many dress socks, so they have a little rougher feel that I only notice when I first put my skate on.  The Thinees are Polyamide +3% cotton.  The polyamide is a stronger material and also softer, so that combined with the cotton gives them a much nicer feel.

About the same in “thinness”, maybe a slight nod to the Pearsox, slight.  And since polyamide isn’t hydrophobic, combind wih the coton they can get damp.  My son is a sweater and he always comments how they are wet after he takes them off.

Thinees are a bit moe expensive.

A note on Pearsox sizing, they are enormous.  I am 6’3” and the adults come halfway up my thigh.  I am still deciding betwee youth and intermediate, which I still fold down at the top.

...but that’s actually why I like it, because it’s slower players have more time to try to make creative plays, and you can see how plays develop in a way you don’t really get to see in today’s dump and chase at 100mph that the men’s game often seems like.

Good point, I think this aspect is what appeals to me as well, but again, only at the top levels.

  7. I wonder where the balance of fit and performance is.  Squeezing your foot into a skate that is as tight as possible to me seems like it will limit the ability of all the muscles of the foot to apply the subtle pressure throughout to effectively control your edges.  Referring to the conversations about skating without laces to develop those muscles and the intermuscular coordination among them, to essentially clamp down on the foot seems counterproductive.  This seems especially to be the case with the toes.  Just my random thoughts.

  8. Trotz spent a lot of years not moving past the first round, so I am not ready to call him the second coming of Scotty Bowman just yet.  And no, I don't think that just because you have a bunch of good players you just sit back and let them play.  Maybe in the NBA or lower levels of hockey but to do what they did in the regular season takes skill.  There are a lot of facets to coaching, not just Xs and Os.

Carolina seems to play a steady game, something that I think bodes well for the next two rounds.

  9. Trotz definitely is in the top two for me.  It is a regular season award so Cooper is my other finalist, not sure which way I land.

Wasn’t expecting it to play out this way but then again wasnt expecting the Pens to get swept either.  At this point I think Carolina is probably my team except my son has adopted Dallas so I have to tread carefully.

  10. I thought I heard that the business model of the CWHL didn’t have franchises and the league owned the teams.  I may be wrong but there certainly has to be a sustainable business structure in place.

It may be a chicken or the egg thing.  Does it need support to incubate and then self-sustain?  What markets can support a team?  I really like watching womens international hockey at the highest levels but within that there is a pretty significant drop in the quality once you get past the best teams.  What is the level of play like here?

Pro sports are just an entertainment business so I wonder what the market is for this?
