  1. Yeah, well, it's just "Old Boys" pickup, so it's the only time most of these guys get on the ice anymore, and it's only once a week. It gets kind of ugly and embarrassing when the last point's on the line, not so much so that it's not fun anymore though. It's not pickup like shinny with just skates and sticks.

  2. To each, his or her own. I like the logo a lot. It makes more sense for speed skating, but the oval also applies pretty well to a hockey. I like the bling, but it's also understated. I don't like the graphics packages used by Bauer and the rest of the industry, but I can see why that's a popular way to go, especially given the aesthetic that will maximize common appeal for the audience. If I understand what you mean by unfinished, they are handmade, so construction details can be a bit more noticeable, as would be expected; though again, that's not for everyone to like or accept. I still think the bling is just the right measure, and makes me think more of Chanel than cheap, whereas Bauer and the rest all look silly and intentionally unresolved.

  3. Flip, no wonder I like these VHs. They are almost identical to my G35s from a side view. Here are two pics, one where the VH is behind the G35, then both back to back. Get on my VHs tonight for my first game in them...excited.

SydNap, thanks for those views. That answers some questions I've had for a while. Plus, I love the back to back shot, which shows the more aggressive heel angle of the VH. That was one thing I loved about my 705's, so this is good news

  4. Received my VHs last night via USPS. I caught the mailman at 4:30 putting them into the lockbox. I told him they were a box of skates, he did not believe me (very light). I baked them last night per the instructions. One thing I should mention is that because of the way that they fit (super snug around the foot like a cradle) and because I skate barefoot, I had to stop mid-process and go find some thin socks. The eyelets were really hot and started to burn my foot. I accounted for everything else....except safety apparently.

The baking resumed and I let them sit overnight. I skated on them tonight for about 45 minutes. They felt surprisingly like my Graf G35s, just lighter and more comfortable. It's been said, but these skates HUG your feet and really lock them into place. There were no hot spots or pressure points (I usally have toe box issues, but not today!), and overall they were very comfortable. The only "downside" is how hard they are to get on and off. I'm ok with it though because my feet were completely locked into the skates. I can't compare that to any other skate I've worn. The best example I could give would be like a really thick sock that you put on that has a blade at the bottom. Overall my foot and skate felt very connected. About a minute in I was skating like I have worn these for several years. Very impressed.

I'll come back and give an update in a few months. I can't speak to durability right now, but these puppies are nice...

Thanks Scott for getting those Graf holders on for me and making such a nice skate..

How high are the boots compared to your G35's?

  5. After wearing different iterations of the Bauer Supreme with flexible tendon guards along with the Easton Mako, the fixed/immobile tendon guard is one of my dislikes with the VH.

Tendon guards should be a part of shin pads, not skates. There would be no more Karlsson injuries then.

  6. Skated on the VHs with the Carbon/Kevlar Razor Bladz Wednesday night. As expected they were extremely stiff. Boots felt great even though they were a half size bigger than I would like, but still managed to get a good heel lock. Similar stance to the Mako and felt like the boot is cut slightly higher. The holders are stiff and unforgiving, but they were fast. It also helped I cut them at 90/50. So yesterday I took off the Razor Bladz and mounted the Mission Magnesium chassis from my Makos and skated inline on them last night. Felt very quick on my feet. You notice a few different things about a boot when you use them for ice and inline since you change your stride a bit. For me it came in the stiffness of the tendon guard, which I noticed more playing inline. Overall, great boots, lightweight, impressive build quality, and a high degree of thermo-formability.

How high are they compared to your Grafs? How do they feel mobility-wise in comparison?

  7. So, the Mako either corrected my technique, or it is just allowing me to skate in my natural motion

When you have a drastic improvement in fit, you can experience a similar discrete improvement in performance. In such cases, in my experience, correct (or let's say "improved") technique and natural motion are one and the same. Glad you're finding a better fit and more fun on the ice

  8. Thanks for pointing those Easton elbows out. I've been looking for something new, and I love the RBK 20K, except for the upper piece of the elbow pocket. It's cupped all the way to the top, locking the arm in a bent position. I've thought about modding them, but that would be a pain and unsure work on a pricey pad. These Eastons look similar, but with a floating piece where the top of the elbow cup is.

  9. Definitely. I'm one of them, no question. The Nexus is the best looking skate on the market, imo... if that says anything.

Sure isn't going to stop me from wearing something comfortable though! And now that they're black, so much the better.

I hate to admit this (insert confession bear meme here) but I've honestly avoided Bauer Vapor everything the entire time I've played hockey (about 3 yrs now) solely because that's what EVERYONE has. Trying Vapor skates was the last thing on my mind (though I did do it, before giving up and forking out the cash on the Makos).

Anything Bauer I've ever had has been Supreme or Nexus. Yep, I guess I'm one of "those guys", but in reverse.

I really like the new Nexus, love the angled grid that looks kind of 80's original computer graphics / that era Tron. And I love Bauer skates when they're black and blue (Supreme 1000, 3000, 5000 before the brownish heel pieces came in; Vapor 8, one95). I didn't really care for the look of the previous Nexus, but before that I really liked the Flexlite, with its subtleness and emphasis on texture over graphics.

Unfortunately, Bauer 4000s, 5000s, and (OG-)Vapor 8s mutated my heels and never really worked for me for what they were supposedly built for. I've been suspicious of Bauer ever since becoming essentially a Graf variant of what I criticized above. I'm intrigued by Bauer's skates since the one90, but if I'm going to skate in anything non-Graf now, I'm thinking it'll be VH. Before that I was thinking it would be the Mako. I love the speed skate influence that's coming about.

  10. I have been using T-Blades since 2001 and they have always made my skates lighter but these skates are a whole new level of light. I have my old Graf 705's and Graf Ultra G5's on hand still. I will have to do a weight comparison.

I'm curious, how do the VH boots feel to skate in compared to the --5s from Graf, also, how high is the boot cut compared to those. 705s were the best fit I ever had, and I've been unable to skate in anything higher cut ever since, but I'm really intrigued by VHF.
