  1. Well, I just got back from the post office to ship a girdle first class to Toronto from southeast Pennsylvania. The cost? $36.50. Thirty six frickin' fifty. Canada is now officially on my no-ship list until freight companies decide to stop being extortionists. In addition, I'm reasonably sure the Popeye's I had afterwards gave me food poisoning. Also, as speaking as a forever alone, today is like the first day of winter (screw cold weather), Black Friday, and Hitler's birthday all rolled into one. Lastly, I decided to bitch about all of this on a hockey forum on the Internet. Happy Valentine's Day everyone!
  2. And now, some words of wisdom from the Grand Poobah of Knowledge: Burning Bear (really would like to change my horrible MSH handle) When bringing your iPhone full of music to play during your New Year's Eve hockey game and the battery goes flat when you were sure it was fully charged, it would behoove you to consult with one of your tech-savvy teammates as opposed to spending all of your time on the bench repeatedly pressing the power and home buttons attempting to resuscitate it. Moreover, after becoming red-in-the-face in frustration, don't start banging the phone against one of the metal dividers in the Plexiglas like a madman, hoping that will magically fix the problem, and end up shattering the screen. Above all, AGAIN, don't wait until after you've destroyed your phone to talk to your tech-savvy teammate and have him explain to you that it was a simple $20 dying lithium-ion battery issue whilst staring at you like you have mushy pudding for brains. Also, don't be me.
  3. Pretty depressing that these aren't isolated incidents. I recently had to turn down an offer to play with a bunch of my good friends simply because men's league is a sanctuary for the civilly challenged. And it isn't cheap, either. The way I see it, if you're not enjoying yourself, your money's not well spent.
  4. Yeah, I'm with you on that one. The outlines look horrendous. I also hate the fact that Bauer is switching to worse kinds of nylon exterior material and those awful mesh gussets on all of their gloves. More of a stretchy gusset kind of guy, like what you'd find on their old TotalOnes and TotalOne NXGs. Thank hell CCM still uses that material on their superb 4-rolls. It breaks my heart as something of a Bauer loyalist, but I'm probably going to start introducing more and more CCM equipment into my armory. One more thing: The new Vapor 1X stick. $299.99!? I'm out. No way will I EVER pay that much for a stick, from them or anyone.
  5. My ever-growing collection of gloves. Custom Easton Stealth CX gloves which I had done up in the style of the Easton Air GX9500's worn by the Flames during the 1994 season (more details about those in the custom gloves gallery), and matching Calgary Retro and Calgary Home/Away Rene Bourque Bauer Supreme TotalOnes. All three gloves have micro nash palms and stretch gussets; my favorite combination. Now, if only I could locate Bourque's Heritage Classics...
  6. ^^ All because of these two crazies ^^ Model: Stealth CX Size: 14” Foam: EVA Dual Density PE insert: 1.5 mm (Standard) Thumb: Flex Palm: Micro Nash Grey 0.8 mm Gusset: Poly Knit Black (Stretch) Palm fit: Standard Finger length: Standard Gusset height: -1/4" Cuff length: Standard I didn't want to play too much with the fit given how much I liked the fit of the retail Stealths though I did opt for shorter gussets; a wise decision in retrospect. What I really wanted was to have the colorway echo that of the Easton Air GX9500 gloves that the Calgary Flames wore in the 1994 season. Gary Suter and German Titov (below) are the only wearers to my knowledge. Here's the mock up: ... and finally the end result, which was better than I dared hope for. Huge, HUGE thank you to Jesse, Easton, and everyone else who made this possible. I've wanted customs like these for so long and to be able to get to make a pair just the way I wanted them was a dream come true.
  7. Oh, what the heck? Might as well essentially copy/paste this from Sports2K. I scored a pair of CCM Ribcors off eBay recently and decided to convert them into roller hockey skates. Took them all the way to Monkey Sports in New Jersey, though it looks like it was worth the trip. Apparently, they do conversions all the time. Going to be taking them out for their first spin tonight and I'm really excited about it.
  8. Wow... I was planning to come here and vent about how men's league hockey has basically become a sanctuary for the civilly challenged and how I'm basically done with it - I guess I sort of have - but that seems so ridiculously trivial compared to Chadd. You know, it's actually quite strange I never crossed paths with you (knowingly anyway) being so close by and all. I don't think I could ever offer up any sort of proper consolation, but if I bump into you, I'd be glad to buy you a beer, man.
  9. Those are awesome. I remember seeing such customizers like that on PSHG, but I too missed out on them. Love to do a pair myself, but unfortunately The Hockey Shop/Source for Sports won't work with us lowly and unwashed 'Murkans.
  10. What!? You're an inhuman monster. Anyway, here's my latest pick-up: If I may, a few thoughts. I picked these up on the grounds that I like my TotalOnes and because of how much the segments and graphics echo the old Nike Quest gloves. Since I never did get to own a pair of the Nikes, it was nice to give myself a chance to placate my inner child. I really like how comfortable they are; much softer and close fitting than the T1s. I like the fit, which is a huge improvement over the NXGs where I felt like I needed a 14.5". These in a 14" are perfect. I've worn them three times now. The first two times I wore them I had to break in the palms - could barely even stickhandle - but they felt much better this morning. However, other issues have already begun to arise. In the first picture, some threads have started to unravel that weren't so when I bought them. Nothing's come undone yet, but I'll be keeping an eye on it. In the second, the large cable mesh already has a snag in it. After closer inspection, Bauer's used the same cheap, god awful nylon on these that they used on their terrible, TERRIBLE Vapor Pro Series gloves. Mine lasted about four months before I took them out to a pasture and put them out of their misery. I really hope these hold up better, but again, we'll see. Lastly, and while it sort of comes with the territory of the Supreme line, they do restrict wrist movement a little more than I like. Not enough to be a deal breaker, but that on top of my mounting skepticism of its quality, I'm beginning to think a pair of Nexuses or Vapor APXs - I don't much care for the APX2s. Heresy, I know - would've been a better buy. Anyway, sorry for the long post.
  11. I concur. CCM skates on a hi-lo chassis AND you don't lace up the top eyelets? You're a man after my own heart.
  12. I used to swear by the now defunct Adidas All-Sport socks even though I've seen mayflies with longer life spans. Ordinary Bauer skate socks are okay, but the super-tight cut makes them something of a headache (or is it footache?) to get on and off. They also have a nasty habit of becoming "slick" after sopping up sweat, and if your skate is even the teeniest bit too wide or long, you'll know it. I switched to Swiftwick Aspires last year and haven't looked back.
  13. Huh. Nothing about Easton's upcoming line-up with the exception of the Stealth CX stick. Seems like they're really playing it close to the vest this year.
  14. Super stoked to use this for the first time tomorrow morning. Best looking stick Bauer's made since the original Vapor XX.
  15. My my, those retro Luxes are a thing of beauty. You didn't happen to see if there were any APXs in that colorway, did you?
  16. Yeah, I've considered that route, but unfortunately, no dealers nearby carry any Eagle gloves for me to try on. The Talons looked tempting, but I've heard that the finger splits have been uncomfortable for some and I'm not willing to shell out that kind of cash for gloves sight unseen. On a more topic-relevant note, I'm willing to wait and see what changes are made to the Warrior customizer. Right now, the problem I have with them is twofold: 1. I can't quite color the gloves the way I'd like and 2. neither of the two gloves (the Franchise and the Creeper) on the customizer fit me. I'll try on a pair of the AX1s when they come out and the Covert DT1s (haven't tried them yet, although those palms kinda scare me a bit) and see if either would work for me. If one of them does and I can color one up the way I like, I'll gladly pull the trigger on a pair. If not, no deal.
  17. Not sure if the losing money thing is exclusive to Warrior, but from everything I've been hearing, it doesn't sound like holding my breath waiting for one of the other brands to toss their hat into the custom glove ring is gonna payoff. Guess I'll have to make-do with taking fabric paint markers to a pair of white gloves or something.
  18. While the Vapor Pro Series gloves are - if I'm not mistaken - an SMU (and thus beyond the scope of this catalog), I hope they get green-lit again this spring. Love the all nylon shell, the simple palms, and the good overall protection without having to pay up for the APX Pros.
  19. Very nice. In my opinion, two of the best looking skates Bauer's ever made.
  20. Yes! CCM added the +1 feature to their pants. Couldn't have happened at a better time as there's a good chance I'll be ditching my girdle again soon. However, I remember liking the 18Ks the last time I tried them on, too. Some tough decisions will have to be made.
  21. 9D. There was also a 6D and a 8D available as well, I believe. Strangely, those got picked off before the 9s which I thought would be the first to go. And Louie... sweet Christmas, dude. Very impressive, though your lack of a Flames retro third shell makes me sad.
  22. Some of my more recent additions: The Tacks I snagged off of eBay brand new. The stick came courtesy of Total Hockey, and it was hard to pass up while they were offering to toss in a $50 gift card to sweeten the deal (for a +$200 purchase, not necessarily for the stick itself). I have little doubt that I'll regret either of those purchases - being a former Tacks and Supreme user - but I have mixed emotions over the Vapor XXXX Pros. Sadly, what everyone has said about them is true. They don't take impacts too well. Gorgeous gloves, very light and flexible, but in the last 2 months, I've taken slashes in the fingers and thumb and felt them for the first time in my life. The joint in my thumb still smarts from a pass attempt that went a little too high and caught me in the thumb silo from a game on New Year's Eve.
  23. Phooey. I had a tiny strand of hope that perhaps CCM would bend the "update an equipment category every 2 years" rule that applies to most companies in the hockey industry and issue one of the pant models in a taller cut. Sadly, it seems my cries fell on deaf ears. I really liked the feel and look of the U+12 pants I tried out last year, but they were just too short for my freakishly long legs. I'm leaning towards the Nexus 800s at present due to some positive remarks a few guys I know have made about the Supreme line of pants, but based on my own experiences (in the last year or so, I've had a Bauer girdle, pant shell, helmet, and equipment bag fall apart on me through no fault of my own) I feel a bit justifiably iffy about handing over more cash to Bauer for something that will disintegrate after two months. I know I've been avoiding you for years now, CCM. Mostly I was upset that you canned the Tacks line and changed your iconic logo to the cheap "Demonized" font, but given the bitter disappointments other companies have been churning out, I'm ready and willing to meet you half way. Still, you have to give a little in order for this relationship to work. Skate wise, opinions on the RBZs seem to be pretty mixed, but I honestly think these are the best looking they've made since the (x)92 Tacks line. I second the person above me asking about the fit. At present, I'm in D/AA Reebok 11Ks coming from plain old D U+10s and the Reeboks feel only slightly narrower in the heel than the U+10s did. I can't help wondering if custom CCMs in a D/AA are the solution.
  24. That Lightning set up is simply awesome. I will never not like that color palette.I think I seriously need to ditch my current plain old boring black/white set up in favor of something like this.
  25. Wow. Nice. I can't help feeling a little stupid asking for the whereabouts of this catalog and then having it pop up the very next day. I ain't complaining, though. I have a much better idea now of what to target. Thanks. On a side note, it's kind of sad that there won't be a successor to the old Bauer Vapor MBP8 girdle. That particular bloodline ended on a pretty bad note, at least from my experiences. I've owned two Supreme TotalONE girdles, both of which fell apart easily within the same window of time it took me to wear out the MBP8. The same could be said for my Supreme pant shell in which the loop holes came undone, all because I had the sheer gall to wear it. Hopefully the Nexus pant shell is an improvement.
