So mine was a little different because it went from a WTF to a LOVE these!
I had custom Bauer skates made for me - fitted and sized and all that great stuff. The fitter - @JR Boucicaut - is a master at what he does. I waited my 8 weeks or so and couldn't wait for them to arrive. I expected the PERFECT fit...... well they got to me and HOLY MOTHER OF GOD did they hurt!! Now mind you, there was nothing really wrong other than my own stupid expectations. It took time to break them in and we had to punch out and work on some spots and now I totally love them but I have to say it was a really painful experience for a while.

I'll keep it very simple for you, sounds like you're focusing more on what you lack than what you bring to the table before games. This is likely why you're feeling anxious! I'd just ask you this, what if you wrote a quick list of 2-3 strengths you bring to the table, and purposely focused on those pre-game? Comparing yourself to everyone around you is just going to take your focus off of what you have to do to perform well, and will increase your anxiety. Try keeping your focus simple and on your strengths, not where you lack or comparing yourself to othersThanks @Jackson Slauenwhite. If we ever get on the ice again I will certainly try to shift my approach. I think if I can bring more beer it'll make a huge difference! LOL
Seriously.. I am good positionally and anticipate the play well. Those are things I can focus on. Much appreciated.

Going to add to my list... a couple of years a go I moved to Step steel and on @JR Boucicaut 's advice moved to an FBV that was shallower then my ROH. Then with the ProSharp project moved to a Quad1 profile and went even shallower. The new set up has really helped my skating and stability. So while it's not an old piece of gear I wish I had back which was the point of the thread, it one of. - oof not THE best things gear wise I have ever done.
PS - the sit on a pair of JR Boucicaut customs too!

I had a pair of grey/silver Easton stealth shoulder pads once that were near perfect and I dumped them way before I had to. Wish I still had them. Fit perfectly and low profile,. Tank like protection. God I wish I had them back.

Ok... kind of corona bored with no hockey so let's just have some fun with this....
What is the one, single favorite piece of hockey gear you have ever owned and why? It could be anything from a stick, to a helmet, gloves or skates. It can be new or old and lost but you still wish you had it. Just that one, perfect piece!
GO!

You can a have a stiff blade that isn't pingy tho.... the Easton Stealth was a pretty pingy stiff blade and the puck used to bounce off for me. My Tacks and True blades are stiff but receive a pass nicely. I find the advantage to a stiffer blade is obviously accuracy in shooting but in all honestly I get more feedback from the puck and thus feel and receipt of passes has improved. Just try some out in warmups from other guys...

Hey, thanks for making yourself available to us.
Here's my question... I play in a division that is really a notch or two above my ability levels. I'm the captain and the guys are my best friends but the truth is I often feel overmatched and I head into the game feeling nervous and that does not help me at all.
Do you have any tips on mental game prep when you are "playing up?"
Thanks a ton!!

Did you ever find that green shell you were looking for?
I've mostly settled in on what I like at this point, after playing for four years. I still keep an eye out for gloves / pant shells I don't have / are a deal. And I'm a total sucker for socks with sublimated designs. The main thing that reigns me in is that I'm kinda cheap, so I never want to pay retail. Though if Warrior would let me customize gloves with the full QRE flex cuff, I might be in some trouble... 🙂
In terms of sticks, I'm consciously no longer messing with curves / whatever and trying to just give myself consistency. I'm bummed that the P30 never took off as I really really liked it, but being locked into CCM made bargain hunting pretty hard. I decided to just go with the Sakic curve and live with it.
New helmet tech also gets my attention.
I guess maybe its not so much that I've lost interest as at this point there doesn't seem to be a lot of real innovation and I'm over my initial gear learning curve.
MarkYea took a bit but HM finally restocked the Bauer shell so I jumped on it. Thanks!

Cool to see this thread come back...
I find myself in an interesting spot... I keep looking at EBay and Sideline swap but I never buy.... I looked for shoulder pads for a bit but couldn't find anything else I liked more. Repacked a whole bunch of sticks this year tho. The mot fun I had was when one of my teams git new jerseys so I went all out on new shel, gloves and helmet. Oh, the joy!!!
I guess in terms of protective I am just satisfied. Sad. Ironic isn't it....

I have exactly the same problem. My solution - after 10 years of trying every pad on the market - was a frankenpad! I took the silver Sher-Wood 9950s and had Farrell like pad cubes sewn onto the back. I think they were Farrell... maybe some padded pants and shorts and shirts, I don't actually remember.. I also attached a belly pad from some other pads I had because they ran a tad short. The caps drop nice ands low and the Farrell padding does a nice job absorbing impact. When these wear out I retire!

The toe box is plastic and is malleable. I have had it compress from blocking a shot just like you did and the toe box was fine afterward. I don't know if higher end toeboxews are better than lower end skates but my gut tells me they are the same. That's a plastic part that is interchangeable and easily mass produced.

Good to hear the success stories. I worry about the long term future....

Followed up with a cardiologist due to family history. Two bad tests led to an angiogram that picked up blocked arteries. I am now the proud owner of three stents and a Lipitor prescription. Oh joy.

Restricted or not, at age 52 my toe isn't flicking anywhere!!

you keep saying you fail the pencil test. I have to think you need a different cut skate - nexus?? Thats why you are hurting I'd think. I'm not a fan of pads and extenders... I prefer the right fit.

Some other great ones for me - I also found the Warrior Dynasty HD1 with some great pop and good puck feel a few years back.
True A6.0 SBP 2018 is a stud for me too.
I went Tacks, Ultra Tacks, SuperTacks 2.0,. JetSpeed, Tacks AS1 and then moved to the True A6.0 SBP and I think I have settled there. I loved the Tacks and especially the Ultra Tacks but then they went downhill. I sold off most of my CCM stock and filled up on True.

Bauer might have shot themselves in the foot with their lawsuit.

- To answer directly. as @stick9 said... thinner is better. You want a nice thin sock so that you can feel the ice more. The advantage specifically is that your skates will not get as smelly and wet and you avoid blisters.
