haha, it's prob more of a supply and demand thing too.  Where I live, Long Island, NY (pop. about 8 million people), I can probably count all of the hockey stores/shops with my fingers, then when you subtract the ones you wouldn't even trust to sharpen a pair of skates you only need one hand to count.  The few good stores are small and the cost of living and running a store in this area is astronomical so naturally we pay more for most services, but something like this I'll gladly pay $28 for to know it was done right (also for comparison, every place charges $10 for sharpenings, this place is one of the few that does FBV and that's $15, I'm sure that's more than a lot of other areas charge).

Eric, guess you went to the Rinx eh?

Whats a schedule? Both Men's teams that I play on in NY, in 2 separate leagues mind you, only give their individual games out 2-3 weeks in advance. We never get a full season schedule.

Chris and I play together...  he and I have to check the schedule every week and then we post updates to the team web site.  It's a pain in the ass.

I think I got to a point where everything was comfortable and protective so why change. This crap ain't cheap. At some point you say, new elbow pads would be nice, but not $150 nice. These days, I tend to buy out of need rather than want. I did however treat myself to a new helmet (Tacks 710). I just wanted a new one. Nothing overly exciting.

I still have a soft spot for sticks, gloves and skates. If you took the cost out of it. I'd probably have a wall of sticks a half dozen pairs of gloves and a couple pairs of skates.

Same here...   I am comfortable and wasting that money to replace what working seems like a waste.  When I see something innovative - like when I bought my Warrior Alpha gloves - that was fun.

Stuff is just stuff. It's up to you to find joy in the game. Perhaps you're becoming all millennial, and it's now all about the experiences. Do you find happiness in scoring a goal, making a nice sauce pass, or drilling the goaltender in the nuts with a clapper? (sorry, IPv6Freely)

I agree.  I've got plenty of joy for the game though at my talent level goals and sauce passes are few and far between!

  4. I've been playing for 17 years now... I started late in life.  One of the things I loved about the game was the cool gear.  I've bought tons of shit over the years and I know many of you gear whores have done the same.  But now I find myself uninspired...  bored perhaps.... or am I finally just satisfied with that I have?

Have any of you also gotten stagnant on the gear hunt?  Is it the lack of truly new offerings?

    Thoughts?

This is a question that takes trial and error to answer.  Check out the ProSharp Project right here on MSH and if you put in the time I am sure you will find what works best for you.

Yes, agree with that. Nicholas, I know you suggested to try the new skates with the out of the box profile but I'd like to try out this quad profile out of interest. If it feels bad, I'll just try something else or go back to the stock radius. You seem to know the most about Prosharp profiles of anyone around here. If I am going to go ahead and try one, would you suggest the quad 0, 1 or 2 to start? Thanks.

Not for nothing but I'll bet your stories of "The things hockey store management does" might be funnier......well, if some of them weren't just sad. Just guessing here but I don't think I'm far off.

I had bought 1X skates once.  The kid selling doesn't bake them per the instructions - which I had to show him.  Then he says as they are coming out of the oven... "after you put them on walk around a bit...  that's what the pros do."  Me:  Nah

  7. Update....

I have now played 3 games on the Quad 1.  The first game I had increased stability up front and more confidence going into high traffic player where contact would occur.  Game two also felty good but I think I used a bit too much stone. I was grabbing a bit and turning was compromised.  Last game was the charm.  Lighter stone and maybe some of that new edge is wearing off too.  Turns and crossovers were great and stability too. Very pleased.  At some point I will pop in a Quad0 to compare it too.

  8. Triple Radius - 9'/50mm/10.5'

    Steel:STEP 272

    Hollow:100/50 FBV

About Me:  I have been playing 17 years since the age of 34.  As a player that came to the game later in life I struggle with edgework, high speed stability and tight turns.  I am typically strong on my skates in battles in front.  I have been looking to move towards shallower hollows to increase glide while still maintaining a confident edge and increasing stability.

About a year ago I moved from a 9’ rocker LS2 to STEP Quad 0.  I felt that the Quad 0 was pretty revolutionary for me and enabled me to go from playing on a 100/50 (3/8 equivalent) to a 100/50 (1/2” equivalent). I found I had more steel on the ice, especially under my heel and that my turns, push off and stability were better.  While more stable than my 9’ rocker, however, I still felt I had room for improvement. That is what led to my participation in the Pro Sharp project.

Review:  I came off the ice having just tried and been pretty comfortable with the Quad 1. While I had a fairly decent idea what the Quad 1 would feel like, I had no clue what glide would feel like.  I took a first step on the ice and immediately was confronted with a radically different feel from either of the quads.  I think the best way for me to describe it is “water skis!”  This profile felt radically long… so much so that I felt incredible bite and depth in the ice.  It was very uncomfortable, but I was committed to following the protocol, so I stuck through it. The first few laps were spent just working on pushing off and then progressed to crossovers.  The increased bite had an opposite impact on my stability and instead of making me more stable it made me less so.  My balance was compromised and transitions from front to back were nearly impossible and gave me quite a fright.  Needless to say I couldn’thave been happier when my 15 minutes was up!!

    Mobility:1

    Stability:  2

    Speed: 2

    Acceleration: 2

Other profiles on deck: Having tried this, the quad 1 and quad 0 I will try the quad 1 in a game and also get a freshly profiled quad 0 to compare it to.

  9. Quad 1 - 6’-9’-12’-15’.

    Steel:STEP 272

    Hollow:100/50 FBV

Review:  The Quad 1 was the first set of steel I chose to demo because I wanted to see the difference between the 0 and the 1.  My first impression on my first strides was that it certainly felt longer in the toe and somewhat more in the back.  The truth is that this is not the case…. The rear of the Quad 1 is longer and the front is the same. Nevertheless, that is how it felt to me.  My first few laps were a bit choppy as I got used to the longer radius but I quickly got comfortable.  Push offs were solid and crossovers had more stability than the quad 0.  Transitions were smooth, feeling, feeling more or less identical to the quad 0. After my 15 minutes I felt that this was steel worth trying furtherin game play and might be worth spending more time with.

    Mobility:3.5

    Stability:  4

    Speed: 3.5

    Acceleration: 4

Other profiles on deck: The next set up in my trial program is a “glide” radius - 9'/50mm/10.5'
