Favorite Skates of all time, top 5 (just for fun)

Bauer XXX's Easton Mako's -
My 17 yo son's two Flylite sticks' blade have both gone soft. Sticks are intact and shows no sign of breaking, but the blades... you can grab the blades and flex them quite a bit and they make this weird styrofoam-ish sounds but he kept using them and they didn't affect his shots too much. While his 2 Ultrasonics blades however didn't go soft, but both sticks broke above or near the 7-sided Sonic taper (he was taking simple wristers when they snapped), and my son rarely takes any slapshots... Let's see if his Hyperlite will hold up.

If you can play, nobody cares what you wear on the ice.

The only decent solution is the CCM mask, which acts like any normal mask and will prevent less transmission

I wish California would just mandate the use of something like the CCM mask for youth hockey and open up rinks/games, instead of having parents go way out of state to play hockey, unprotected...

Thoughts on the new Bauer Vapor 2X Pro protective?
Coldclay replied to VegasHockey's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
My kid's 1X Lite Shins lasted a whole season but recently I noticed the right knee cap shell cracked in half (my kid didn't even notice) and someone gave us a $100 gift card to Monkeysport so I bought him the 2X Pro Shins. The sizing is different and he's now a 14" instead of 13" (seems the same height to me) and the shape is indeed more streamlined/tapered. Weight is definitely lighter than 1X Lite. I was thinking Bauer was cutting corners by ditching the free flex bottom of the shins but my kid said it made no difference in feel. He is a 16AA Midget and it's obviously full contact, we shall see how the 2X Pro last... -
Well he has never had a concussion, even taking on dudes who were 6+ ft tall and over 250lbs (he's 5'7 and 152 lbs just turned 16) but at the same time he has never had a big ass contusion on his forehead from a nothing hit either so ya, weird. He said the helmet sucks and he's sticking with his re-akt 1st Gen.
-
That's what I said, the True lid sucked for HIM. Again, for no-checking, the helmet is fine, but would I recommend to anyone who plays full contact? Hell no.
-
It was a 'nothing' hit, very low speed, but all I'm saying is that he's been playing for almost 10 yrs and nothing close to this has ever happened but the very first time he used the True lid... Anyhow the True lid sucked for HIM, but again it would probably be great for anyone who plays beer league or no-contact pick up.
-
Well, it's obviously my personal opinion after watching my son almost have a concussion wearing his True lid for the first time in a game... Check out the previous thread 'New True LId' Pg 4...

I spoke to some lady who answered the phone at True and she put me on hold to verify that indeed they will ship WITH holder uninstalled and u at full price regardless. -

Spoke to True today confirming you can still order boot ONLY, with or without holes drilled for holder, but they will ship skates out WITH True holders uninstalled and you still have to pay full price. Pretty lame if you ask me, since if I don't want the holders, why must I pay for them if True offers boots only?! -

I just want to order custom True skates, without the holder and just the boot. My kid skates on Marsblade and have no use for the True Shift holder... -
I always find True sticks play stiffer than the advertised flex...

Help! I'm Looking for an original Easton Aluminum (Silver)
Coldclay replied to Eesh's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
I do have a Titan TPM 2020, game used, signed by Gretzky so no I can't help you buddy... -
my kid rarely ever breaks his sticks and the ones that broke are usually due to heavy usage or age... but he did break his QRE SL in less than a month and just out of warranty of course. But his regular QRE is still alive and kicking and like a tank, but can't say the same about the SL...

Hands down, True Dynamic 9 helmet... so disappointed with the level of protection.

Single Favorite Piece of Equipment Ever
Coldclay replied to beerleaguecaptain's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
The one item I wish someone, anyone will continue to make is the Bauer Elite Padded Neck Protect shirt. I never wore one but I made damn sure my kids did. USA Hockey should make it MANDATORY for youth players to wear some sort of neck guard/protection as Canada makes all their youth players wear them. Traditional neck guards are probably more protective but they're bulky and moves around, but the Bauer Neck Protect shirts with the Kevlar collar works much better. Yes, Bauer (and CCM) still makes integrated neck protect shirts, but they no longer make them with Poron padding. Not to mention the retail price for the integrated poron shirts were $149 IIRC which likely led to poor demand. CCM, True, or whoever should step up and make a short sleeve, zip-up, padded shirt with Kevlar neck protection. -
Perhaps, but all I know is that he has worn a Re-Akt for the past 3-4 yrs and not ONCE has the Re-Akt failed anywhere near as the True lid did on it's first actual game... ONE game was all it took for him to say enough with this hard hat. He has never had a bruise appearing anywhere north of his chin of any sort using the Re-Akt. And frankly, I haven't cared for the VT Study since 2011.

The True helmet fits my son appropriately, not too tight and just loose enough, with no swag ass helmet/cage hang of any kind... A medium was the right size for a 5'7" 150 lbs kid with a thick fro providing some natural cushioning. However, the problem was that True's MIPS didn't do enough to dissipate impact to justify and support the poor absorbing quality of the spongy pads. And with the little amount of pads built into the helmet, means your head is right up against the hard EPP foam... It needs a way higher quality padding and a lot more of it inside to make the True Dynamic 9 helmet safe IMO. Can't someone just make the original Re-Akt with MIPS?!
-
So I've been meaning to give my .02 cents on the new True MIPS Helmet... I bought one for my 15 yo Midget AA son for Xmas. A size Medium, paired with a size Large CCM Titanium cage. He's been wearing a Bauer Re-Akt (original version), paired with the same Large CCM Titanium cage for at least 2 seasons. The Re-Akt helmet has been holding up just fine with no damage, but since I'm a gear whore, I wanted to buy him something new and the MIPS really attracted me as I believe in the concept of slip-plane technology. The fit and build of the True helmet seems fine to me. Fit my son well with the various sizes of padding and a lighter-than-most (except Easton E700 of course) weight for the helmet. I really wanted him to like it, despite it looking goofy af on anybody's head and I've been a fan of what True has been putting out. With that said, my opinion is that this helmet is absolutely unsafe for the sport of hockey. He practiced with the True lid for a week and played one game with it. And one game was all it took for me to return immediately for a refund. My kid is an uber physical forward and will not hesitate to hit someone, but this time he was on the receiving end of a check, sort of... So he collided with another player along the boards and somehow fell on his knee, and the other player's hip made contact with his head/helmet and he immediately laid on the ice holding his head. He went off the ice and took off his helmet and swelled up with a huge bruise all the way across his forehead. He ended up sitting out for a whole period... After the game, he flat out told me that he can't wear the True lid because it simply doesn't have enough padding all around. See the pic below, and that's from ONE hit. He's played AA for years and checking for the last 3, and he's had his clock cleaned a few times but nothing like this has ever happened before... Not to mention the collision that caused this wasn't even all that great. It was just his helmet pressing into his forehead at very low speed... IMO the True lid would be amazing if it wasn't for the foam padding they use. The foam is basically spongy pads, very much like the E700, except thicker and by the feel of them, the pads would get thinner the more you use the helmet. Now image you using a bicycle helmet, with or without the MIPS, and now go play a full contact hockey game with it. The True lid is exactly that, a thicker, bulkier bicycle helmet... Now if the true lid would use something like Poron AND the MIPS, then you'd have a perfect helmet. But as of now, the padding for the True is seriously lacking and I'd advice anyone to avoid it, unless you play beer league or other non-contact game.

The funniest thing about Mighty Ducks 1 was how they said Bombay used to rule Peewee... First of all, nobody ever remembers who 'ruled' in Peewee, second, ruling in Peewee is like saying he used to be the smartest kid in 5th grade... they should've said midget or even bantam, but kicking ass as a peewee pretty much means nothing.
