thanks Chad I like FBV, but wish it's availability was wider... how does it compare to BladeMaster's FBD? http://www.blademaster.ca/pdfs/BFDFlatBottom.pdf
-
Ok - it's been a while since I posted in this thread, so apologies if it's been recently discussed I've been on it for 1.5 years now, but was thinking of going back & giving regular sharpening a try again for one simple reason: even regular but sharp blades are better then dull FBV FBV still isn't widely available + is twice the price of regular sharpening, so I ended up sharpening once in a blue moon (untill I start blowing tires & spilling basically), but it's not that fun Also anecdotally it sounds like FBV hasn't been that popular after all - for instance quite a few local shops after much research didn't go down that path simply because there was no interest for it. Even people who tried switched back etc so what gives? Thoughts? Are there any stats available as far as adoption of FBV in the NHL?
-
they had it since early this year - can't remember exactly, but long ago I only wish the price was $8 as initially planned - not $10!

you must be talking about P92 - P91 is most definitely a heel curve & doesn't even remotely resemble a toe or even a mid curve

Hmm. You honestly can't see the difference between an actual hockey play, like a fake or a deke, vs. someone tapping their stick trying to trick someone into a mistaken ID pass? I guess I'm on my own. both are deceptive moves that trick you into making a mistake - like it was said above it happens even in the show, it doesn't hurt - so what's the big deal about?! sounds like a differnce of opinions to me...
-
precisely my points - thanks Chadd! good discussion though - it's important to know that there're some sensitive people out there that can take it the wrong way (isn't there always for everything) :)
-
very interesting definition... Other then the fact that I've seen this work for people biologically much much older then 5 (but who knows what their "mental age" was really :)) seems like there's a lot of "stupid" people around... re this point "Instead of getting the puck via a hockey play, one is trying to trick a guy into giving up the puck." - I guess we should all forget about faking/deking as well - just "plow it like a man" right? ;) as a disclamer I've never done the tapping shit myself personally, but seen it happen way too many times & never had a problem with that (hence I think I have an unbiased opinion :) ) - after all comparing with all the hooking, tripping, slashing & other cheap stuff this is really nothing
-
this will obviously go against the grain, but care to elaborate as to why is it so bad? I personally think it's a fair game (obviously when applied periodically and NOT all the time so that it doesn't become annoying) - at least it teaches people to look before they pass - makes it real
-
One95 is the first skate that I just love, and I tried for extended periods of time all top of the line Eastons & Bauers before so considering how awesome One95s are this personally bugs me - why would someone who already fits well in One95 EVER switch to X60?!
-
how do people generally feel about screening goalees @ drop-ins? While certainly very effective purely from the ease of scoring point of view (plus it makes the game real :)) it probably takes a lot of fun from the goalees, and after all drop-ins are supposed to be mostly if not all about fun, so what would you say - is screening in or out?
-
unless you're saying that beginners overuse inside edges on the forward glide I'm not sure I understand what it means as experienced skaters are always on (even slight) edges - pretty much never on the flats. even in the forward glide the pattern changes from a slight outside rolling into the inside edge (see Stamm).
-
agree - in addition (really just a clarification to your "don't" part): do: pass the damn puck! it's really annoying when you get a bunch of so called "danglers" who just try to skate their way through net to net every time (head down of course) just to loose the puck somewhere in the corner or get it pocked away when there was at least 1 or 2 teammates open in front of the net... really giving them the puck or supporting them when they try driving to the net is not fun! I wish they at least heard of playing Gretzky rule or something...
-
hence another reason for not choosing 100/75 - too deep, not enough glide I had similar experience & others commented as well that 100/75 just doesn't provide that cool endless glide that other FBV cuts do
-
the only real difference that can back up this distinction is the profile straight out of the box - Vapors come with 9', and Supremes with 10' because of that OUT OF THE BOX Vapors would feel more agile, but after adjusting the profie to whatever suits YOU both skates would feel equally fast/agile

Surprised you say this... Did you try literally wrapping the boot around your heel right after baking (compressing it to comform to your foot)? When you get it from the oven the boot is so soft especially in the heel you can easily mold it into anything with just your hands & enough pressure (thanks for the tip TBL BTW ;)) that's what I did personally & was able to get an awesome heel lock - was done 5 months ago - no problems ever since (as soon as the boot cools down it holds the shape very well)
-
there's been quite enough said on stiffness of One95 (just read JR's review for instance) - while they certainly feel stiff if you just try flexing them with your hands they definitely don't feel nearly as stiff as XXXX while skating! to explain further: XXXX are total bricks & to me personally felt just the same on ice - like crap basically (I'm over 200 lbs & still couldn't flex them the way I'd have liked to) One95 - whole different story - they just flex in all the right places & because of that I don't find them nearly as stiff as XXXXs - possibly just perception, but who cares - it works :)

anybody had a chance to try the new 6K shoulders? They look pretty nice - perforated, and slim enough http://www.greatskate.com/product/id/8654/...ulder-Pads.aspx how heavy are they & how is the range of motion comparing with Sherwood 5030?

I thought the new collection will only become avilable as of April 10, and in stores as of April 15? Who told you that? I had sent an email to greatskate.com asking about the actual dates since the line is available on the site for pre-sale the answer was "shipping on April 15" why? Is this incorrect? If so could you please enlighten us? Thanks!

here we go - straight from the horse's mouth (just look at the table & compare bite angles of FBV to a regular circular hollow) http://www.flatbottomv.com/technical_data.pdf

have you had a chance to look at One95 girdle? How does it compare to One95 (on paper changes appear to be minimal)? also re shins - aren't they 20% lighter then One90s (which were already pretty light)? these are only 2 pieces on the line I'm interested in & so would appreciate your feedback (since I was going to pre-order these 2 items) Thanks!

Most people I have put into the FBV say the 100/75 has more bite than 1/2", and I would agree. The 90/75 is right around 5/8 or 11/16 in terms of bite. 100/75 is definitely a LOT more bite then 5/8 - I'd say to me it felt in between of 1/2 or 3/8 - more like 3/8 100/50 is more bite then 90/75 for sure, it's somewhere in between of 5/8 & 9/16, more like 9/16 so basically I agree with Chadd :))
-
yeah - I agree... 7, maybe 8 - 10 is way overkill re "lasting just as long" - what cut was it? would you say this across the board or only for 90/75 & 100/75? like I said before 9/16 used to last me over 15 hrs on ice 100/50 lasted maybe 5 - quite a bit of a difference! 100/75 seems to be holidng up better, but it's too deep so I don't like it well - would you call One95 skates performance? they seem to be holding up quite well
-
as far as I know the price hasn't been finalized, and even the service hasn't been made officially available to all customers $10 is way too much, and last I heard they were thinking the same way, especially considering that FBV doesn't last as long as conventional sharpening
-
Because one number corresponds to the flatness of the blade and the other of the bite angle. 100 would mean that there's more of a flat, therefore, the edge on the 50 will be more pronounced than the same edge with a 90 flat. Make sense? I also read the brochure & understand what both numbers represent, that's why I knew that edges on 100/50 would have sharper angle then of 90/75 BUT laws of physics still apply - given enough pressure (hence question re skate's weight) a longer (and this is what the second number represents - depth on the edge) but duller edge would still cut deeper then sharper, but shorter one? anyhow - complexities a side I'd like to know whether 100/50 would last nearly as long as 90/75 & 100/75?
