VH Footwear/TRUE by Scott Van Horne
SolarWind replied to dsjunior1388's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
No thanks, that thread existed since the beginning of time and is really about “everything and the kitchen sink” for True skates. My question is specific to the durability of the current version and any publicly available info re any upcoming upgrades. -

Apologies if it's been already covered, the search didn't reveal anything relevant so here it goes: I've been looking at custom True skates for a while, but the concerns around their durability (specifically rivets getting lose sometimes on a monthly basis) held me back. Now that my current skates are falling apart I'd like to pull the trigger but curious if anyone can comment on the quality/durability of the recent True customs - have the issues been resolved? Also any thoughts on the new Shift holder vs Tuuk LightSpeed would be appreciated as well with regards to height/pitch/flex? Lastly if anyone is in the know are there any dramatic improvements/re-design coming down the pipe any time soon? Thanks! -
I had +1 on my skates (Bauer, tuuk holder) for the last decade, it felt more athletic but as I’m getting older I’m finding it a bit much especially when skating backwards. But even on forward stride/crossovers feels a bit too much on my toes, front of the blade is always ready to dig in which is only useful for running starts. So I plan to switch to neutral on my my next skate.

Are rivers still falling out from True skates (and other one piece boots) on a monthly basis?
-
So how does RBZ compare to TotalOne in terms of puck feel and shooting?
-
this got me thinking and I went to look @ the docs and indeed - Pro is marketed for the Lightspeed Pro holder. well - hopefully it's no different then LS2 since that's what I have and the shop suggested that either would work just fine.
-
how did you choose 'speed' over 'pro'? I looked @ both and went with the pro's mainly because of the added height. out of the box the blade looked weird with the huge toe & heel, but since I needed to profile them anyways these will hopefully go away so we'll see...
-
it might be just me, but from going back & forth between Nike branded One95 & Bauer branded ones it really feels like the stick has changed slightly for instance the blade feels more "lively" on the newer models, while it felt "damp" on the older ones... other then that sticks are identical...

wow new to hockey? ;)

So is it safe to assume that the 2011 Catalogue is due later this year (should be a couple of weeks away), and it'll feature the new TotalOne protective line that will come out as usual in April 2011? Or will One95 line continue through another year?
-
wow - what an awesome deal! I've been searching high & low for P92 77 flex One95 but they're very hard to find at any price, left alone a steal you got - good for you!

ability for FBV to hold edge has been discussed & opinions varied initially many said that FBV doesn't hold edge as long as conventional ROH, and I remember when I just started using it early 2009 I was thinking the same. But after an adjustment period somehow this thought has gone away? Blackstone was eluding to the fact that a arch-shaped surface or ROH edges distributes the force evenly unlike the triangular shape of FBV "fangs" - again not sure if this has something to do with it... all in all I did have a few cases when freshly shapened FBV lost an edge after just ONE game, and I didn't have any crashes in a game & took my usual good care of skates (I have walking skate guards that I immediately put on when off the ice) so quality of the person doing the work makes HUGE difference. on a side note I gave 5/8 a try again on one of my sets of steel & can now say with certainly that 100/50 has more bite, and more glide. After over a year on FBV it took .5hr to adjust to 5/8 to really start feeling the edges again, but still the grip wasn't as foolproof as with 100/50. Coming from FBV stopping on ROH is MUCH easier though All in all I didn't like the change at all - granted, I've been on 100/50 for well over a year, so maybe it'll be ok with time, but so far FBV was far more enjoyable - I said this before but I wish it was more readily available, and was more cost effective :(
-
somehow I alway thought that 5/8 is 100/50 - not 90/75? at least this is what the transition was for me... also I was thinking, and I don't really understand this picture: conceptually it might have something to do with the angle of the edges, but still how can 100/50 have more bite if it's so shallow when comparing with 90/75 that is much deeper, also 90/75 seems to have sharper angles too?!
-
thanks Chad I like FBV, but wish it's availability was wider... how does it compare to BladeMaster's FBD? http://www.blademaster.ca/pdfs/BFDFlatBottom.pdf

Ok - it's been a while since I posted in this thread, so apologies if it's been recently discussed I've been on it for 1.5 years now, but was thinking of going back & giving regular sharpening a try again for one simple reason: even regular but sharp blades are better then dull FBV FBV still isn't widely available + is twice the price of regular sharpening, so I ended up sharpening once in a blue moon (untill I start blowing tires & spilling basically), but it's not that fun Also anecdotally it sounds like FBV hasn't been that popular after all - for instance quite a few local shops after much research didn't go down that path simply because there was no interest for it. Even people who tried switched back etc so what gives? Thoughts? Are there any stats available as far as adoption of FBV in the NHL?
-
they had it since early this year - can't remember exactly, but long ago I only wish the price was $8 as initially planned - not $10!
-
you must be talking about P92 - P91 is most definitely a heel curve & doesn't even remotely resemble a toe or even a mid curve
-
Hmm. You honestly can't see the difference between an actual hockey play, like a fake or a deke, vs. someone tapping their stick trying to trick someone into a mistaken ID pass? I guess I'm on my own. both are deceptive moves that trick you into making a mistake - like it was said above it happens even in the show, it doesn't hurt - so what's the big deal about?! sounds like a differnce of opinions to me...
-
precisely my points - thanks Chadd! good discussion though - it's important to know that there're some sensitive people out there that can take it the wrong way (isn't there always for everything) :)
-
very interesting definition... Other then the fact that I've seen this work for people biologically much much older then 5 (but who knows what their "mental age" was really :)) seems like there's a lot of "stupid" people around... re this point "Instead of getting the puck via a hockey play, one is trying to trick a guy into giving up the puck." - I guess we should all forget about faking/deking as well - just "plow it like a man" right? ;) as a disclamer I've never done the tapping shit myself personally, but seen it happen way too many times & never had a problem with that (hence I think I have an unbiased opinion :) ) - after all comparing with all the hooking, tripping, slashing & other cheap stuff this is really nothing
-
this will obviously go against the grain, but care to elaborate as to why is it so bad? I personally think it's a fair game (obviously when applied periodically and NOT all the time so that it doesn't become annoying) - at least it teaches people to look before they pass - makes it real
-
One95 is the first skate that I just love, and I tried for extended periods of time all top of the line Eastons & Bauers before so considering how awesome One95s are this personally bugs me - why would someone who already fits well in One95 EVER switch to X60?!
-
how do people generally feel about screening goalees @ drop-ins? While certainly very effective purely from the ease of scoring point of view (plus it makes the game real :)) it probably takes a lot of fun from the goalees, and after all drop-ins are supposed to be mostly if not all about fun, so what would you say - is screening in or out?
-
unless you're saying that beginners overuse inside edges on the forward glide I'm not sure I understand what it means as experienced skaters are always on (even slight) edges - pretty much never on the flats. even in the forward glide the pattern changes from a slight outside rolling into the inside edge (see Stamm).
-
agree - in addition (really just a clarification to your "don't" part): do: pass the damn puck! it's really annoying when you get a bunch of so called "danglers" who just try to skate their way through net to net every time (head down of course) just to loose the puck somewhere in the corner or get it pocked away when there was at least 1 or 2 teammates open in front of the net... really giving them the puck or supporting them when they try driving to the net is not fun! I wish they at least heard of playing Gretzky rule or something...
