Shoot outs

Recommended Posts

Ok, so one of the rule changes discussed is having shoot outs instead of ties. Who is the best at shoot outs in the NHL. Who would you guys send out there to take the winning shot?

The best breakaway guy on my squad.....

I think what you mean is just who are the best penalty shooters in the show.

I don't know. I think it is up to you on how to decied this one...A breakaway and a PS take different skills. I guess if you had to pick a guy on your team that would be your go to guy, your specialist. who would it be. Sort of like you DH in baseball.

If it's like the AHL shootouts, and no reason to assume otherwise, each team designates 5 guys who all get to shoot. You don't get to pick the one guy at any given time.

What team has the advantage? I'd say Ottawa has the deepest group of skill players in the NHL, the question is their goaltending.

Lemieux is money every time he gets a breakaway. He's old as hell, but that doesn't really matter during penalty shots.

Does the AHL actually designate 5 guys before the game or after? I was pretty sure it was the coaches decision at that moment. but I'm not an idiot, I understand that you pick five guys. But you don’t always have your best shooter go first. My point is, for example, if you are up 4-3 and you can put it away with the next goal, what player do you want out there to take the potential game winning goal.

I agree with the masses. I would go with Hejduk. After seeing him score on a PS in chicago last year with the same move he used in Tampa the game before (it was the game before or after).

Good point on Goaltending though Chadd. do you guys think that a certian style is best in Penalty shots? And to go into an earlier topic of Player roles, do teams now sign players bassed on their PS skills?

Here's the IIHF rule, basically the same thing USA Hockey uses. I was under the impression the AHL uses the same structure.

Eligible to participate in the Game Winning Shots will be two goalkeepers and five players from the official game sheet of the game. Each team shall nominate the five players (plus one standby player) by name and uniform number in the order they will take the shots, on the form handed over to them by the linesman.

In any case, a coach is likely to put his top guys at the top of the rotation in an effort to put pressure on the other team. If you score on your first three shots and they don't score at all, it's all over.

I have not seen it in the AHL, so I can say for sure. But I do know that the UHL seems to just be random. If they are down in the rotation, the coach will just point. I would put my best shooter third; but if it is close and the fourth shot is still going to be there no matter what he would go then.

Lemieux, thats a givin! I would throw Sundin into the mic, he's got an excellent backhand and scores alot on breakaways, also Mogilny. Marian Hossa would be a good choice too, as would Kovalchuk.
