Having Problems Finding New Skates

Recommended Posts

After having skates that felt pretty good break down on me (Supreme 7000s), I've been in two different pairs of skates in the past six months, both of which are/were painful to skate in (Vector Pro, Classic Gold). Both times I was fit a LHS and ended up with skates that felt like they fit but didn't after really getting out in them. I've all but sold the VPs to a friend and am still skating in the Classic Golds for the time being since they felt better than the VPs.

In the past month, I've been to three or four different shops to try on different skates (including 8090s, V10/12, Z-airs, XXs and several mid-level skates), and not once have I found a pair of skates that really fit. However, the stock that the stores carry in my size has not been all that expansive, so there a certain brands/models that I haven't gotten to try on at all (Mission and Graf 703 namely) and some that I did try on may not have been the right size.

I guess part of the problem is that I don't really know how to classify my foot shape so that I know what skate models to ask for (if they even had them in my size). Not to say that the people fitting me have been incompetant, but they at times suggested skates that weren't even close to fitting my feet.

At this point, I'm seriously considering ordering custom fit skates, but I thought I'd try to get some input here first since the knowledge base is so broad. The custom skate route I want to be a last resort because of the cost and time involved. First, how can I determine my foot shape to know what kinds of skates to look for (i.e. narrow heel, wide midfoot, etc.)? Second, is there a way I can determine the right sizing for a skate model without having a lot of stock in the area to try on? I'm open to any suggestions on skate models or ways to solve these problems I seem to be having, and I appreciate anyone's help.

Well, I'd make sure to bring durability into account when looking at your next pair. Because if you're broken down a pair of 7000s....a skate like the XX would be a plush slipper on your foot within a month.

Actually, the 7000s were fine on the exterior and stiff as ever, but the ankle padding in one of the skates basically disintigrated, making skating in them unbearable.

Nothing in my mind can beat the recent line of Nikes (V-12's or Roller Daddys) They are just the best fitting skates I've ever had.

In your case though I would suggest broading your search to the Grafs and Mission's even. Try all skates top or bottom and at the end of it all you should find what you are looking for.

I hope you can find your "dream" skates matey, its a great feeling when you do!

I wish that I could try on Missions and Grafs, but they just haven't been available in my size to try on. I did get to try G5s and 705s, but they didn't fit right either.

As for going back to 7000s, I'd consider it, but they'd have to be pretty cheap. I may have just had bad luck with my pair this time, but I don't want to invest too much just in case I have similar luck.

For reference, here are the sizes I wore in the various skates. Maybe this will help some people out.

7000s-10.5EE, right width, but maybe a tad bit long, still felt very good until the ankle pad broke down

Classic Golds-10D, can be painfully tight in the midfoot if I overtighten the skates, have a hot spot on the outside left ankle that's mildly painful

VPs-9.5D, had a bit of pain in the ankles and heels (esp. on the right which never stayed situated in the heel cup) but they fit the rest of the foot well

maybe you should try getting different insoles for the classic golds?

just a thought before you shell out for a new pair...

I feel your pain as I also have a hard time getting the perfect fit for skates. Tacks work the best for me, but the boot is a bit shallow, hence the reason it takes me about 10 minutes to get them laced correctly as the tension has to be perfect for the top of my foot.

Back to your problem, sounds like you're close with the Classic Golds. The ankle is an easy part to get punched out. Sometimes it's better to dance with the Devil you know than the one you don't know! (In other words, if you think you're close you may want to tinker with them instead of continuing to try find the perfect fit.)

Good luck,

JJ

the 8090 will share the same deep boot as a Classic..adn even more so..that is one skate i've gone down from a 10.5EE to 10R in ...(well the 3090 roller equiivalent anyways as i skate on a 7000 for ice)...

the advice for the footbed is good too...a lot of times i trim it flat or just put a flat one in there as it doesn't do much for me otherwise and adds some volume..that way my foot is sitting in..and not on... the footbed

anyways..good luck...
