Overated/Underated

Recommended Posts

I'm going to cause a ruckuss on this one but south ot Canada Mats Sundin gets almost no publicity for being as good as he is. 20+ minutes a night, takes every important faceoff, kils penalties, on the first PP unit, big, tough, great leader, etc....

He's compared to te past captains here. Gilmour and Wendel, who were completely differen't players. He gets credit, but it still known as a "floater"

Koivu is considered a "star" locally, it is relevant to where you live, but I don't think he is up to his hype. He's a decent player and a hard worker, but I would never consider him all-star material, but thats just me.

What do you guys think about Crosby? He's a great player but I myself think hes a bit overrated.

Short of him breaking all of Wayne's records he's going to be considered overrated by some.

How people think Iginla is overrated is beyond me. He's one of the most complete players around.

He is one of the best in the game, but he can be built up very high, just like anyone. Alot of this is where you are from, who you are talking to and what you are looking for in players.

I can see how someone would think he's overrated. He has only scored more than a point a game over an entire season once in his career. Joe Sakic, who gets a lot less attention has only failed to score at least a point per game 3 times in his career. One of those was in his rookie year and the three seasons he didn't average at least a point per game, his PPG was .944 and is 1.21 PPG over his career. Iginla is .804 PPG for his career. Sundin is over 1 PPG for his career as well.

As for PIMs, Iggy is .804 PIM per game, Sundin is .800 PIM per game.

I also find it hard to call a winger a complete player, they have far fewer responsibilities in a lot of systems.

iginla = overrated

brodeur = king overrated

madden = underrated

lang = underrated

naslund = underrated

luongo = underrated

I'll add more.

Lang's been underated because he's been a perimeter player until recently. He hasn't had a consistent run at an elite level.

I think the most underrated player is Mats Sundin. He leads the leafs perfect and was always reliable. The only place where he gets respect is in Toronto lol.

Scott Hannan is so overrated.

yeah he played horrible in the world championships

Agreed. He sucked in the WC, but I've watched him a ton playing for the Sharks and I think he's very talented. Still needs some mental maturation though.

As for overrated, I always thought Selanne was in that category, but after his last season with Colorado I don't think anyone rates him highly anymore.

Boyton is overated Boston made out like he'd be a 2way, franchise defenceman. Hannan is overated but his teamate Mike Rathje is underated. Palffy is so underated when healthy he's one of the most exciting players in the game.

I know goalies can sometimes turn out to be flash-in-the-pans, but Andrew Raycroft was solid last year -- his positioning was outstanding.

And Patrice Bergeron played smarter than at least half the league, which is amazing for an eighteen-year-old.

Overrated:

Jagr

Actually, these days I'd say Jagr's closer to being underrated than overrated. He gets bashed so much on every single message board I've read, and in the press etc....

He gets called lazy, moody, a floater, only put up good numbers with Mario on his line (total falacy, btw).....people forget how good he really was. For a number of years - best player on the planet. Many would argue he still is, and certainly in the WCs he looked to be "back". Played hard, despite a broken finger, and was certainly not floating, lazy or moody. Breezed by elite defencemen like they weren't even there...

When he wants to be, I still reckon he's the best player in the world, and I think he wants to be again.

(Either that, or the mullet really is the source of all his powers. It's coming back......:lol:)

I hate to sound biased but I believe Mattias Ohlund of the Canucks is underrated. Often he is overshadowed by Jovanovski because Jovo's name appears on the scoresheet more than Ohlund. Ohlund isn't an offensive threat but he's steady in his own end.

All valid points. I'm not a Flames fan or anything, but in my mind, a guy who has won the Rocket Richard trophy twice in the last three NHL seasons deserves the attention he gets. Sakic is my favorite player, but he and Sundin's PPG stats are definitely aided by the fact that they played quite a bit of their careers in a time when point-per-game players were commonplace. Also, both of these guys have had nice supporting casts over the years, while Iginla is basically the only forward on his team that the opposition has had to worry about.

For all of you who have said Hannan.....now there's a guy I don't really understand all the hype about. Start calling interference and holding by the book, and this guy becomes the equivalent of a pylon.

They also play on "deep" teams where shortening the bench doesn't happen that often except for playoffs. Sundin really hasn't had alot of help in Toronto, at least not until Mogilny came and that was in Quinn's era when he rolls 4 lines. Before then he mostly played with Mike Johnson, he had a brief stint with Gilmour, but not much. He's played on some really bad Leaf teams, much like Iggy. It can be a definite plus to have you and maybe 1 or 2 other good players as te only goto guys on the team because you log a ton of ice.

Exactly. If Sundin hadn't been Renberg'ed the past couple of years, his stats would be much better. Over the past couple of years the Leaf's lines have been very ass backward. Stuff like keeping Roberts on the first line, just because he had a good '02 playoffs and keeping the potential twins (Antropov and Ponikarovsky) on the second line with Niewy for no real reason has really hurts the Leaf's offensively.

I'll throw in Tucker and Holmstrom to the list.

I really dont think Tkatchuk is an overated player. I am able two watch him in like every game he plays in. He is by far one of the best Blues and is more than capable of carrying the team if he has two. He did it more than a few times the last season. (whenever that was)

living in/near detroit nothing bothered me more than people ripping on sergei fedorov. he did have five 80+ point seasons in the NHL, but when he wasnt scoring, boy the fans and media were pissed, but oh wait he did win a selke, also a heart, and maybe a scoring title? (i think) also i know he came in a very close second to ed belfour for the calder trophy. also what people dont know is that he played defense a bit and a very defensive style in russia (he was taught old school, take care of business in your own end first) also you can go to hockey db and look at his numbers in russia and see what looks like very poor offensive stats, also being a fourth round pick people should be lucky to have seen him in the NHL. it also chapped my ass that he didnt win the conn smyth when lidstrom did (i like lidstrom but fedorov average like 1.79 ppg in the playoffs) also people lashed out on him for nothing being "faithful" russians and most euros dont grow up dreaming of winning a cup, they grow up dreaming of not being in an army or under the rule of a dictator, so when he left detroit one of the most depressing citys in america for southern california and all of hicks around here criticized him i didnt, good for him and i dont know, but in my little ranting way thats why i think sergei is under rated....PS wow i forgot to mention he is the only player to win two individual all star skills comps. (fastest skater and hardest shot) also IMO probably the best, fastest, smoothest, quickest skater in the show
