1.85M = 6'

2.25M = 7

2.5M = 8'

2.75M = 9

3M = 10'

3.4M = 11'

3.7M = 12'

4M = 13'

This is a thing of beauty. Now I need to go back to the shop and leave them a copy of this.

forward, size 8

ive had 13 for 4 years, tried 11 hate it, i aint changing

I guess you wouldn't like a 9' then. :P To each his own. But...

9' is more optimum, performance wise, for that size steel for a forward. Skaters who have years of skating often "hate" something when they try it new, and often don't stick with it long enough to adapt. For example, a guy who has been skating on 3/8 hollow all his life will hate a 1/2 at first. But, eventually, he will adapt and his game improve, you just have to give it time. Real young skaters, take about 20 minutes to adapt.

Well here's how the whole issue turned out, better late than never.

I ended up going to Just Hockey on steeles (Toronto), and the guy talked me into 9' neutral. The transition was seamless. I even thought it felt better than the old runners.

Warning: Stupid Newbie Question below...

I just got a new pair of Vapor VI's. I know nothing about profiles, radius's, etc., so I just took them to my rink and had them sharpened.

Should I have had them profiled? Anything else I should have done? I've only been skating since January, so I don't know that I could tell any difference or not.

Skate size 9.5, I'm 5'10, 175lb playing defense.

Thanks for any info!!

Check out No-Icing Sports - Skate Radius / Profiling. This page will give you all the education you need to make an informed decision on your new skates. Personally I would get in touch w/ Bob at Noicing Sports to get a custom profile and hollow based on your age/weight/skate size/experience/skating style/etc.

I personally just had mine done by NoIcing last week and skated in an open hockey or the first time over the weekend. I'm not sure what I started at (never had a profile put on my Bauers) but, based on the feel, I would assume it was flatter than what I now have (9', medium toe down). I definitely noticed a difference in maneuverability. When I started a turn, I felt like the skates would take over and flip me around much quicker than before. At first this was annoying (almost embarrassing after breaking up my own rush several times), but by the end of the session I was getting used to it. I made a few sweet 360's that sent the defender flying off into a corner. I do feel like I lost a bit of speed, but this could have been my own laziness or the change in ROH. I think w/ the new profile I may be able to get away w/ a shallower ROH, but will wait until I get out there a few times to be sure. I would definitely reccomend having the new skates profiled to fully take advantage of them.

I've been wondering if I should go from a 9 foot radius to an 11 foot radius these days. I had been skating on a 9 foot radius with a 7/8 inch hollow and quite liked the speed I gained by the shallower hollow. However, my turning at near top speeds was suffering a bit because I couldnt hold my edge and I felt "perched" on my edges as opposed to balancing on them. I dropped my hollow down to 3/4 inch but now I feel like I'm plowing thought the ice again. Would an 11 foot radius help me a bit by adding some stability while allowing me to retain the bite of 3/4 inch hollow for maneuverability?

bump

I'm interested to hear an answer for Reaper since I'm in a similar situation. I now have a 9' profile w/ a 9/16" hollow. After only 2 sessions I'm not 100% into the 9' since I feel like I have to work to stay balanced and I seem to have lost a step speedwise. However, I do like the newfound turning ability. I was going to shallow out my hollow w/ the 9' profile since I'm having no problems turning, but if I do drop to a 10' should I keep the 9/16" to make sure I don't lose my edges when I'm powering through a turn?

While no one has answered my question yet I am beginning to have my own thoughts on the matter. I think I am going to be taking my profile radius to 11 feet and my radius of hollow to 13/16 so that I experience relatively the same glide coefficient but with more edge for crossover stability. I'm thinking that with more stability I'll be able to develop quicker feet to make up for the larger turning radius.

That was my same thought too. I never had a problem turning quickly before going to 9', but now that I have felt the difference it's hard to decide which I want more. I think I'm leaning to the added stability and glide of a 10', even though it will increase my turning radius. I guess I'll stick to the 9/16" until I find a profile that I like, then start shallowing out from there.

Im 5,10, 160lbs, and play forward. Im wearing graf G9s size 7.5. I am looking into getting them profiled, and wanted to know what the original radius for them would be. Also any suggestions on what would be best to get them done at would be appreciated.

After reading all the threads here, it seems opinions are all over the place with regard to the CORRECT profile. The more you read, the less you know???

Haha, I second that.

You have to think of profiles like stick curves, you have to try a few till you find the one that works best for you. You can't read on a forum what one guy has and expect that to work for you, there are so many variables. Imagine if someone posted that the Coffey curve is the best. Just think of the responses that'd get.

That is why it is supposed to be CUSTOM.

It is what works for YOU.

That's why I have problems with guys who do the same radius for every customer, going as far as pre-printing boot stickers.

While we're on the topic, I'm going to be in the Rhode Island area all summer. Are there any shops in the Boston/RI area that do a good job with radius work?
