RBK Pants

Recommended Posts

These pants looked pretty sweet when the rep brought them by, but we havent placed an order with CCM yet this year. Anyway, has anyone played / worn these pants yet? It seemed like an interesting concept. Also, is the outer shell type thing able to be embroidered? We might offer to send them to be embroidered with team logos if it can be done. Thanks.

I have the 8k, have had them for what, 2 months?

Very nice...havent' gotten to use them a whole lot as I don't work at RDV anymore.

Yes, the pant shell will be able to be embroidered, as it is loose, however it is not removable so the pads would have to be turned inside-out.

I have an interesting story about hour I finally got my RBK 8K pants. I am new to hockey having just started to learn to skate in January so I was still in the process of acquiring all my pads when i got wind of the RBK line coming out earlier this year. I talked with the owner of my LHS and decided to place an order back in march and was told I could expect to get them in the first few weeks of april when they were slated to hit the shelves. Well april comes and goes and I keep pestering the shop owner wondering where my pants are. I finally get to the point where I went to Hockeymonkey and bought a pair on-line so I could start practice with a friends I-league team. Now is where things get a little tricky. I'm a firm believer in supporting my local hockey shop and the owner there has been nothing but nice, polite, and helpful. I didn't want to go back on a promise to buy something from him when he had already ordered it. Anyway after hearing from him how his distributer is saying it's either backordered or out of stock I finally just yesterday told him to cancel the order. I figured I would either buy a 2nd pair from him to either keep for a rainy day or try to sell it here or on e-bay. In the end I got my pants and was able to keep a good friendship with my LHS.

What do I think about the RBK 8K Hockey Pants?

Keep in mind that this is my very first pair of Hockey pants I can't compare it to something else so I will try to tell you what I have noticed in them and how I like or don't like them.

I'm a large guy. 5'10" 300lbs and dropping thanks to Hockey. I was not sure at first I was gonna fit into much especially a pair of XL Hockey Pants. The first time I tried them on it was entertaining getting them over my large thighs, I was worried for a second that they might be a little too small. I wormed my way into them and they have fit good ever since. I have found that it is easy slipping into them when I am wearing my compression shorts.

The protection in the hip and tailbone is great. The hip padding feels almost like a comfortable armor plate that is stiff in the areas that I don't need flexability and flexable where I need it. Since I am still learning to skate I have taken quite a few falls in my pants and have found the hip and tailbone padding to be comfortable to fall on. I wish I had these things when I first started working on "transitons". I was surprised when I saw that there is just a light foam pad in the crotch area I was kinda expecting something more substantial. I guess that's why I made sure to get a good cup. There are zippers on the inside of the thigh which makes things really easy for after you get the pants on and are in the process of armoring up the lower part of your body. The thigh pads are height and width adjustable. You could probably remove them if you were a mind to but I wouldn't recommend it. A velcor strap connects the thigh pads to the rest of the pant and you can adjust the strap to raise or lower the thigh pads. Once you have the pads at the height you want you can then use another velcro strap to tighten the pad around your thigh.

I like the adjustability in the Rbk 8K pants because as I said I'm large and after I get my pants on it can be entertaining to try to lace up my skates and put my shins on. Well because these pants are adustable I unzip the pants and peel pack the outer liner to reveal the thigh pads, then I unvelcro the thigh pads to separate them so they come completely off the leg and I can swing them back. This frees me up so I can bend down really good and get my skates and shins on. One day I might even remember to put on my socks BEFORE I lace up my skates. Once I have my shins on and socked and taped up I put the thigh pads back down and secure them and zip the pants closed. I don't know if all pants are this easy to work with but if they aren't they should be.

My first time on the Ice wearing my 8k's was a workout. Before then I had been skating in just some flece pants with my shins taped on. At first I found my pants restrictive and felt like I was a rogue tank on ice. I figured like all my other pads I would have to break them in some and by now I don't feel they are hampering my skating any.

I hope this "review" has been helpful and will gladly answer any questions you might have to the best of my ability. As to whether or not you can embroider the outer shell? I would think you would have to send the whole pant in to get it done because it looks like the hip, and tailbone protection is sewn in, but I haven't tried to take it apart so I don't know for sure. The shell feels like a slick canvass to me so I would think you could embroider on it witout too much fuss.

Your story is just another nail in the coffin for LHS's. No fault of yours. I too am on back order for 8k pants. I had booked a bunch in JANUARY! I got two pairs, yet the internet sites have them. This pisses me off to no end. I have to tell you, it's not your store's fault. I've also lost lots of sales because my order is not here. To top it all off, I'm getting nickeled and dimed to death by shipping costs They are sending the back orders one box at a time, some with one item in it. I was susposed to receive the whole order by 18-wheeler. Yea right.

As strange as this may sound I find this kinda comforting. Even thought I have every reason to belive what my LHS told me I still couldn't help but wonder if I was being fed a line. Now what little doubts I had are gone. I personally try to go out of my way to buy from my LHS; I've only picked up my bag, and pants from the internet because of extenuating circumstances. The Internet is good for research, but I like being able to ask a guy behind the counter who has actually played the game and get an educated opinion.

Langenbrunner15,

I'm glad you liked my review. Thanks.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only big guy (6'5" 273lbs.) wanting to get into hockey. Just started skating again today, and my neck is killing me. However, everyone at my LHS is rail thin, so I feel embarrassed about asking to try something on to see if it even fits me. So thanks for the heads up.

P.S. Sorry about the long post.

Langenbrunner15,

I'm glad you liked my review. Thanks.

Well, we appreciate guys like you who value service over saving a few bucks.

I'm sure your LHS is not happy with THC about loosing the sale, after all he probably spent some time with you explaining the features, etc. He also spent a lot of time preparing his bookings with the expectation that he would have them in time to sell them while they are a hot item.

Glad to hear that you can embroider them. Its also sad to see all the other LHS's having the same problem. Maybe if we had the ability to buy larger shipments. An interesting concept: The MSH buying group. Could you imagine? MSH insted of say THG? Interesting to think about.

That has been discussed actually.

I'm interested in forming buying group, anyone else?

That's an interesting concept. Let us (the normal poster, non-store worker) know if we can help in anyway. I've got a buddy who used to own his own business as a website builder. Bet I could talk to him and get him to build a high-toned on-line store on the cheap. You figure you have a few hundred, passionate posters here every week. They would buy stuff, and give word of mouth. Many other posters also are affiliated with stores, and might be able to help with the order sizes. It's a pretty good idea, actually.

No problem. I'm ancient compared to most guys at my rink. I'm 34.

I've kinda come to terms with my size and stuff so it doesn't really bother me. I just feel sorry for the poor guy who is on the receiving end of one of my checks (whether accidental or on purpose) :D

Try not to be selfconscious about it. I have discovered that I just love skating which is no real shock because I used to love roller skating back in the days before inline. They guys at my local hockey shop are very friendly and I have never felt embarrased by asking them about any equipment, besides most of them have actually played hockey where I'm still learning. Well that's not entirely true I did feel kinda uncomfortable asking them about the various kinds of cups that were availalble, my wife said I could play hockey ONLY if I spared no expense on the cup she said something about an investment. ;)

A buying group is set up for the dealers, not for the public directly. It enables a number of smaller dealers to get the maximum discounts, something that eventually benefits the consumers but each shop would still maintain their own identity and web presence.

It would be nice to be able to get to "Level 5" or whatever the highest buying level is. Also to get new products ahead of time.

::Sorry JR, didnt know it had been mentioned.
