Jason Harris 31 Report post Posted July 12, 2005 Normally, if I were woken up around 6:30 to the sound of a road crew jackhammering just outside my window, I'd get up to ask, "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING????"However, after nearly eight years of living with dust, rutting and an inch of snow turning into a sheet of ice, we get to join the 20th Century and are having our road paved. It's amazing. We're 22 miles from downtown Denver and less than a mile from I-70, but people on the road fought against paving for at least forty years. Finally, a developer on the road used his contacts with the county and was able to get it passed. They started this morning. Hallelujah! I'd even take 4:00 AM jackhammering for that. :D
freq019 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2005 I feel your pain on the jackhammering. THey were removing our loading dock at work and demo-ing a staircase right outside my office. asdfa 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2005 the road in front of my house was repaved a couple years ago. of course, before they repave, they have to strip the old asphalt off, so these big excavators came and started trying to peel the asphalt off by putting the bucket underneath and trying to lift it up, except it was too thick, and ended up lifting the excavator up. they tried for a while anyways, and everytime the excavators came back down, there was a giant whump, so for about a week, it was like living a giant subwoofer built into every every wall of the house :P

badsk8ter 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2005 Three weeks ago I wake up to my bed shaking. I have a 2 story house and the master bed is upstairs. Then I hear the familiar sound of beeps and engines being revved up as large construction vehicles oscillate betweenare backing up and driving forward. Also loud pounding noises similar to slow beats of a drum. There was a large metal pipe fitted on the end of a front end loader that was pounding the pavement, trying to break up the concrete. The city has hired a construction crew to put in new sewer and water supply lines on my street (about 6 blocks, total). Next, I hear a crash and something breaking and I think my cat is downstairs and had knocked over a glass or something. Since my wife is already downstairs, I assume she'll take care of it. I forget about it and get up and shower. Later, when I come home that night after work. I found a rock has gone through my living room window.I call the construction company to complain about it and the foreman goes into this long story about how all their equipment is getting their windows broken out and that it's probably just some ornery kid that threw a rock through my window. However, I have 12 windows on my front porch and we find about 9 rocks of similar size and color throughout my front yard, as if they were "thrown" up into the yard (like if a tire spun and threw the rocks, is what I think happened), only none of the 12 windows are fazed, only the one closest to the street (about 10-12 feet away). Anyway, a few days later, he "said" someone from the city's planning department showed up and he "showed" them my window and supposedly he too, agreed that a kid threw the rock through my window. Now I'm about $150 to get my window repaired. Sorry for the long post but I had to share.
Jason Harris 31 Report post Posted July 12, 2005 That stinks, Badsk8ter. I know it's not always easy (or affordable) but I think people have to own up to their responsibilities.Recently, a case of nails fell off a saleman's truck in Denver, which caused multiple tires to be punctured on the highway. There were numerous articles about this because the guy paid for everyone's repairs. The guy simply said the accident was his fault and it was the right thing to fix it. hockeydude_49 0 Report post Posted July 13, 2005 Holy crap I know what thats like...I have a 5 year old brother and he likes to get up at 6 30 and run down stairs, turn the T.V. on as loud as he can, and then decide to take slapshots with a real puck at the cabinets in the kitchen, and along with the sound of the puck hitting the cabinets his stick slams on the ground everytime he shoots...It's terrible. jrhky36 1 Report post Posted July 13, 2005 awhile back a contractor in my sub was pouring concrete for basement walls. the next day they were banging away at the forms with sledgehammers, not what i wanted to here at 6:45am. my son (16months at the time) was sick and didn't go to sleep until about 4:45am. boy was i steamed. i let the forman have it. i also called the company and the person i spoke with said they wanted to get the forms off and on the truck before it rained. that was on friday morning, well come dinner time the forms were still there. it rained all day sat and sun. they did not pick up the forms until weds of the next week. go figure.also called the township to find out what time contractors can start work. in my city it is 7am. the ordanice(sp) enforcer called me to talk about this on fri. he called back on mon to tell me that the company was fined by the township.they are currently repairing our streets so the top coat of black top can go down. my son and i sleep right throught it. it would be nice if contractors cared about hte neighbors when they do their noisy work at early hours. but they only care about geting hte job done and getting paid. You're at Georgetown? So did they stop it or did it end up in the street? Oh no, but near my campus there are some steps that are damn near carbon copies of those steps. It's a shortcut for the most part and way too many drunk people think they can make it.
Neo5370 132 Report post Posted July 13, 2005 I feel your pain. Why on earth the garbage truck needs to use those freaking beeps at 6 in the morning on my empty street is beyond me.Also I live across the street from a church.Quasi Modo is up there ringin'em every morning at 7:30, however after living here for over a decade I don't hear'em anymore. It's funny when people sleep over. They're already mad enough when god's good people wake them up before 8am, but they get even more upset when they see me snoring through it.
