Stick Tape - funky colors?

Recommended Posts

I'd love some feedback from you guys the hockey playing public.

I know that some of you may come back and say that you don't use colors because it doesn't last as long as black. Some companies use different cloth for their colored tape that isn't as good as their black tape. Not us - our tape (Comp-o-stik) uses the same cloth as our white and black and is every bit as durable.

So since you can get a colored tape that is as good as white or black how interested are you in using them?

We already offer more colors (11 colors plus white and black) than other manufacturers and we've just hit on something new that we think could be really cool. We recently introduced gold and silver shin pad tape too and we think they look awesome on many socks.

Now we've got a process where we can make cloth tapes in metallic colors like silver and gold and others too. The cloth samples are really cool looking and we are looking at adding them to the line. The big question of course is will someone buy it? There's also a possible side benefit that this cloth may be incredibly water resistant and that means it resists snow build-up on the blade?

So let's hear it from you guys - would you buy metallic silver (and other colors) cloth tape for your stick?

Martin - I tried the silver shin tape I got from you on silver/black LA Kings socks. Looked pretty hot. As far as tape goes, sorry, I'm a traditionalist there - just white.

If other people started doing it maybe, but Im not going to be the person that gets plowed for having something like metallic tape. Seems like to me it would be like putting a target on your back.

I use my shops tape. Whatever we stock is what I get, so Renfrew and fiction. Metalic tape may be an option in which people would find interesting but if any other LHS managers are like me he'll be traditional and only buy white/black and colored tape of the High Schools that play at the rink.

Colored tapes are BIG with my youth customers. They like to be different and use them for many things; e.g, tape a color combo on the knob so they can tell their Synergy from all the others; to match team colors, to be flamboyant; whatever.

Tape Guy, Colors do sell, the more in the mix the merrier.

One recommendation though, if I were you, I'd offer a mixed case. A full case of lime green would go bad before a retailer could sell 36 rolls. Pink as well. So mix up some cases, say 6 clors of six rolls. You'd sell more.

I like Jimmy's idea. Colored tape sells, but not nearly enough for most small, independent stores to consider buying full cases of different colors (72-100 rolls). My shop carries about 10 colors, but I'm part of a 7-store chain--same one as JR--so we can split colored cases among all our stores. The other shops I have worked in either didn't carry, or carried a very limited selection of, colored tape.

I do appreciate the feed back guys. We're pretty excited about the metallic cloth and I think we are going to move forward and do more testing on the cloth to make sure it works the way we expect it to.

Jimmy,

I appreciate your comments on the mixed box. It's been requested many, many times but the trouble is everyone who ever requested had a different idea of what the "right mix" is and that's why you have probably never seen an assorted box from any manufacturer. Instead we just try and keep the case pack as small as possible to make it as easy as we can. In some areas local distributors will custom mix colors for you. I know that there is a distributor in Montreal and another in Toronto who offer this service.

If this silver cloth works out it would really match up very well with the color on a Synergy stick and I think that would be really cool.

We haven't made them yet. We just want to try and gauge the market to see how open they are to the idea before we spend money developing a process to make them. If the intereest is there and the product works like we think it could be very interesting.

you said you had cloth samples. Can you post a picture of one or at least find an image of something that's close?

I would assume that the metallic (or other flamboyant colors) would do well with the youth or the roller hockey contigent. I guess Phat Tape has been pretty successful with their assorted line of shinguard/pants tape with all the goofy designs ("Crime Scene", "Radioactive", etc....).

I myself am set in my ways for the color of my handles (red), mostly superstition....but I'd try something new for the blades or the pants.

Yea, I use a distributor in Montreal, that's where I got some of your Pink tape.

Only problem with distributors is they charge more. :-(

However, I think if you offered two case color packs, say 6 colors in one and 6 other colors in the other, I think you'd be OK. Normal colors in one, like Navy, royal, red, maroon, gold, dark green, and funky colors in the other like pink, lime green, purple, sky blue, etc in the other.

I'd buy both cases today if you offered that!

As far as colors.....Don't forget to do American and Canadian flag tape too!

I know i wouldn't mind any sort of silver. My team being the reading Jr. Royals wear the same jerseys as the echl reading royals, and theres a good amount of silver/grey in the socks.

Another traditionalist here - I use white or black and don't go for the funky stuff.

Yeah, what Flash said.

We sell a fair amount of coloured tape, but obviously nothing like we do in black in white. The metallic stuff sounds like it might be popular with the kids, so long as it's not to pricey.

As for myself, white tape on the blade, and whatever colour is handy for the knob. I'd probably try a roll of metallic silver though in place of the trusty white.

I've tried colored tape but it just gets crappy sticky stuff all over your blade when you take it off, but if they use the same kind of cloth for the colored tape as the white tape I'd try it.
