Sticky sticks

Recommended Posts

Currently, over in the equipment thread, there is a discussion about how to get more "grip" on the stick. Pine tar, hairspray, etc.

At first, I thougt they were talking about their top hand. To which I thought, "Have you considered holding it tighter?" But later in the thread it seemed that they were talking about their lower hand.

This also struck me as odd. As part of my journey I came across a set of USAHockey videos regarding stick handling drills. One of the drills involved sliding a toilet paper tube onto the stick and holding it with the lower hand while practicing. The idea was that if you crushed the tube you were holding it too tight.

So what is it?

The tube is to get your top hand to do most of the work while stickhandling....The Grip is for your shooting, so when you slide your hand down the shaft, It doesnt slip, resulting in something bad

Some people have problems with the lower hand slipping whether its when shooting or when they stickhandle. The grip helps the shaft not slide around. Some people like to overpower the shaft, other prefer the lighter grip. It's mostly prefrence. I liked the grip mostly for shooting, so your hand isn't slipping which could hurt the shot.

I like the grip for the exact reason you mentioned, I hold my stick very loosely and cradle the puck like a baby rather than beat it into the ground. The grip adds a bit of "feel" on my fingertips.

Sign of a good stickhandler Cavs, if you stickhandle with your lower hand loose.

I love grip shaft because I feel I have power on the puck, I could not comeback to shaft without grip.

I'm not a big fan of grip sticks. I like to be able to slide my bottom hand when I stickhandle, and the traditional girps tend to muck it down too much. I've used candy canes in the past.

I hate the grip that comes on most sticks now. I like to move my hand and when I really need the extra grip on slappers, I hold the stick more tightly. Pretty simple really.
