Philly: Forsberg, Hatcher, Rathje, Richards, etc

Has Phily become the new Colorado? They're stacked with some good rookies, great defense, and a good offense. They just inked Forsberg to a two year deal. What do you guys think?

Forsberg will get hurt, the Flyers will question his character for not coming back faster and he'll threaten to go home for the second year of the contract.

Still don't have a goalie...You can score 8 a night, but if they get 9 you're no further (or is it farther) ahead.

No more cap room...so unless they trade they are going with what they have.

they've got esche... and nittomaki... they'll trade JR

Esche is unsigned and although Nittomaki played well in the AHL last year, he's very young.

If the flyers can go to the conference finals with Esche in goal, you don't think they can go that far with a stronger (arguably) offense or something atleast similar with Forsberg and potentially no Roenick, and a no questions better defense with the addition of Hatcher, Rathje, as well as Therian? He's not the best goalie, but he's still good enough to start for a lot of teams in this league.

Hatcher is not a good skater at the NHL level, nor is Therian. That could very well come back to haunt the team if the new rules are enforced.

Maybe...but he hasn't signed yet.

They'll be good, but it remains to be seen how much of an impact Carter and Richards have early on.

+ Forsberg, Carter, Richards, Knuble, Stevenson, Hatcher, Rathje, Therien

- Roenick, Zhamnov, Recchi, LeClair, Amonte, Markov, Malakhov, Timander

The Flyers certainly have gained a lot of talent, but they've lost a lot as well.

I just got an email from the flyers

he Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 61, 205-pound unrestricted free agent center Peter Forsberg to a two-year contract, according to club General Manager Bob Clarke. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

"Peter Forsberg is one of the best players in the game, said Clarke in making the announcement. We signed him knowing that he puts us over the cap and  we will have to trade some guys now."

Forsberg, 32, recorded 13 goals and 26 assists for 39 points and 88 penalty minutes in 33 regular season games for MODO Hockey Ornskoldsvik in Sweden. His 39 points were second on the team (tied for eighth in the league). He also was a member of the Swedish National Team at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, posting three points (1G,2A) in four games.

A native of Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, Forsberg registered 18 goals and 37 assists for 55 points and 30 penalty minutes in 39 regular season games for the Colorado Avalanche during the 2003-04 season. He missed the majority of the 2003-04 season recovering from groin (against Calgary on October 28, 2003) and hip (against Vancouver on February 16, 2004) injuries.

After the 2002-03 season, Forsberg won the Art Ross Trophy as the player who leads the league in scoring points at the end of the regular season (106 points) and the Hart Memorial Trophy as the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team and was named to the NHL First All-Star Team. A five-time NHL All-Star (1996, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2003), Forsberg has also won the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year (1995) and been named to the NHL All-Rookie Team (1995) and to the NHL First All-Star Team two additional times (1998 and 1999). Twice, he led the NHL in playoff scoring (24 points in 1999 and 27 points in 2002).

Over parts of 10 NHL seasons (from 1994-95 through 2003-04) with the Quebec Nordiques and Colorado, Forsberg has recorded 216 goals and 525 assists for 741 points and 544 penalty minutes in 580 regular season games. He was a member of both Avalanche Stanley Cup Championship teams (1996 and 2001). He represented Sweden at the 1994 Winter Olympic Games, 1996 World Cup of Hockey, 1998 World Championships, 1998 Winter Olympic Games, 2003 World Championships and 2004 World Cup of Hockey.

Forsberg is fourth on the NHLs All-Time List for highest assists-per-game average in a career (.905 525 assists in 580 games played).

He was originally drafted by the Flyers in the first round (sixth overall) of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. His rights were traded by the Flyers, along with Steve Duchesne, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, a first round pick in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, $15,000,000 and future considerations in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, to Quebec in exchange for the rights to Eric Lindros on June 30, 1992.

Foppa is a great add from my perspective, but loosing JR is a downer, gotta love the guy. Man, this cap thing is starting to be a pain in the ass;)

Radio:What is wrong with Esche or Antereo? Two good goalies who will push each other to play better.

The Avs core now consists of Blake, Sakic, Tanguay, and Hejduk. Sorry folks thats still pretty damn strong. Plus you have young guys like Liles and Richardson with Stasny and Stoa to contribute down the road.

Reality check Avs fans we were VERY LUCK FOR VERY LONG. Did you think we could keep 6 guys that are considered top NHL caliber on one team. What NHL team can today?

the balance of powers is slowly changing

but seriously... the aves still have a really competative team... i just don't consider them a stanley cup contender just yet... i think aebischer needs to play a little while longer, and they are going to need some more depth...

i think bobby clarke has done a decent job, and everyone thinks that he is just some screw up... i still think he is a crackhead, that dosn't deserve to be a GM... but he has done nicely with the flyers...

He did a good job building the Panthers as well.

Its funny to watch all of the other teams fans gives the Avs a hard time. Few IMO have been playing it smart and have been over spending. They are locking themselves down pretty tight moving forward.

On a side note I was actually happy to see Nazzy, Schnieder, and guys like that sign with the power houses. Its a shame to watch SOME mismanaged franchises being rewarded with the new CBA.

In the end end Boston management is proven to be a complete JOKE. But that should not suprise anyone. Sorry Chippa you know my roots are from NH but I can take those guys anymore.

i dunno lacroix is pretty cheeky when it comes to making moves and stuff... he finds ways to do things that other teams don't dream of doing... as much as i hate the avs they always provide the canucks with the best games, the games i enjoy most are the ones against the avs...

he didn't let peter go... would you rather have tanguay/hejduk for the next 4-5 years, or forsberg for the next 1 or 2 ??? ya i thought so

the only thing lacroix did that was really stupid was that trade for gratton, i thought derek morris played pretty well in colorado, and gratton has always been a bum... that was the only thing that made me shake my head..

Thats what it came down to. Do you lose two guys that are up and coming in their mid 20's or put your money in a guy who may or may not be around due to injury or his desire for Sweden.

I didn't think going over the cap, at any point, was legal. I really like Foppa, but if they loose Roenick it could be a huge mistake. Especially when Clark was on TV yesterday saying how he brought in specific players becayse JR and Primeau asked him to. JR, as much as he is a dick, is a heart and soul player, he gives it night in and night out and I do think he's a good guy to have in the room. I question Foppa in the room. He seems like a terrific number 2 guy, who can do everything, but lead. His threats to leave and the Avs ability to win without him, tend to make believe this.

The Flyers have added in size and strength, but jumped back in speed. Carters quick and Richards can move as well, but Amonte and Recchi gave them alot of outside speed and their D seems to have lost some speed as well. Especially since the quicker guys will be counted on for offense, and the slower will be Defensive specialists or "Heavy minute" guys (that was a great quote).
