Gretz to coach Coyotes

Recommended Posts

I was never one of the gretz jockers, but I think this is a great move.

Who wouldn't give 100% for a guy they thought was god growing up?

I totally agree. All of those players are going to want to work their butt off for the great one game in and game out. It can only help the team.

Gretz played the game so effortlessly (it seemed). Will he be able to coach "regualr guys" that are so far below his skill level.

Not to mention the teams he played on...:

"...After Grant makes the save...he'll toss it Kevin, who will throw it ahead to Paul, who will be streaking up one side. He'll dance around a couple guys in the Offensive zone, and pass it to Jurri. He'll pass it to me, and head to the slot. I'll slip in behind the net and then hit him with a pass for a nice goal. Oh...and don't worry about anyone trying to hit you because Dave is your other winger..."

Hmmm....

I wish him well...but I don't know.

You never know. It could be a downside to him coaching because some of the younger guys would be drooling over being coached by the "Great One". Upside he should be a motivational part of the team no doubt.

And, what does he have to lose?

If they suck it'll be "The players didn't want to listen to Wayne"

If they win it'll be "The players really responded well to Wayne"

I worried about the same thing with Larry Bird, and he turned out to be a great coach. Magic Johnson, however, didn't.

I suppose the point is, Who Knows? If he has good patience, doesn't try to compare his players and their effort to himself, and good communication skills, he should do well. I know a couple of people who've met him; they say he's a great guy, so he presumably has good communication skills.

I hope they have a good defense coach.

Unless Wayne can teach his offensive style in reverse. Kinda like a goalie telling a shooter how goalies think.

Most star players make bad coaches, Bird is one of the very few exceptions. Then again, he also worked as hard as anyone in the game, not all of it was natural ability.

I dont think he'll be a good coach. Just because the style of hockey he played was finesse off of god given talent, he cant teach that. And he certainly can't teach the aggressive style, or defense.

Actually at the end of his career he played defense pretty well. Early on, that wasn't the style the team played. Just because a player played a certain style doesn't mean he doesn't understand other facets of the game.

The season with the traveling, especially out of Phoenix is going to get mighty long for 99. I have watched pro teams practice in our rink on off days. Its not alot of fun being the coach. Drills, drills, and more drills. I wish him well but I think somebody put him to this. "I think we need to sell some seats, etc."

Remember, they are hired to be fired. Even coaches with Cup rings have gotten the boot.
