Is someone trying to trick me?

Recommended Posts

Ok this is a question for all you E-bay users.

I just received an E-mail claiming to be from the Ebay billing department, it says this: "We regret to inform you that your Ebay account could be suspended if you don't re-update your account information." It then tells me my account has been suspended and I can no longer use it (although I can login to my account.) Then it gives me a link sending me to a page where I can update my account info. This is where I started to get suspicious, as the web address isn't an Ebay address, and the font on the page is noticeably different. Then it askes me for my credit card number, then my pin number, and other information that I don't just give out. The Email continues to tell me that if I don't do it, my account will be terminated.

So I'm about 90% sure this is someone trying to steal my credit information, but since I haven't had an Ebay account for very long, I don't know all there is to know about Ebay. I wanted to be completly sure that I'm not just being overly suspicious, and this isn't something I all Ebay useres have to do. Thanks.

Another tip for any emails associated with PayPal: PayPal will never address you as "PayPal Member" they will always use your name you are registered to. Don't respond to any emails from PayPal that address you as PayPal Member.

It's called "Phishing". It's a fake website designed to gather information and then use it for fraudulent use. With my job, it's amazing the type of fraud and white collar crime I see. If the people would actually put that much effort to the good, we, as a society, would be much better off.

I fill them out when I have spare time. I do use false information or offensive words/names though just to have fun with them.

Good advice...I think I got one of those...but went through the regular Paypal.com to see if my account was active, not the supplied link.

I've gotten one of those before and I confirmed it with ebay that it IS a fake. You can send the message to them and they will send it along to the proper authorities. If you go to the security center on the Ebay site you can travel down some links and report it from there.

Awall

Trust me, you will.

I almost fell for it two years ago. Now if I have the time to waste, I answer like Chadd does: nasty remarks and bs info!

Never use a link in a e-mail, the right e-mails will just tell you to got to there site and log in.

exactly. My mom almost fell for one of these emails....luckily I stopped her in time. :o
