Biggest Bust of 05-06?

Recommended Posts

Granted we are nearly 2 months away from opening night, but who will be the biggest bust this season?

My thinking is its going to be someone older, a guy like Hullie maybe who was out of shape during the World Cup last year, essentially sent home because of his lack of conditioning and interest..

He's missed a full year, just turned 41 and isn't in any better shape at the moment (not that he's ever been a bastion of fitness) and while he's skating with a lot of NHl'ers at the moment..looks pretty far behind..

Could be Wayne's first big issue as coach of the 'Yotes??

Crosby. Don't get me wrong, I've come to like the kid and appreciate his talent, but I just don't see him performing to the level that most people expect him to. If he doesn't get at least 50-60 points (which is very likely IMO) most people will consider him a bust.

If he doesn't score a point a game he's a bust.

Talking of Crosby...I´m thinking Daigle B) But honestly, despite his obvious talents I don´t see him dominate in the NHL anytime soon.

Crosby.

I dont think i would mind at all if he tried a fancy dangle in his first game, and was met head on by Jody Shelly, with equipment flying everywhere. Im so sick of hearing about this kid. He's the Tiger Woods/ Williams Sisters/ Yankees of hockey

Brian Lawton and Bobby Carpenter were thought of is similar lights as Crosby.

My guess is he will be somewhere in between Carpenter and Mario. He wont be anywhere near Wayne.

You have to realize there are a lot of people in Pittsburgh who will argue (with a straight face) that Mario was better than Wayne. I know, I've been on the other side of that debate.

Is it really his fault that everyone talks about him so much though? I think you should be saying you want Shelly to level the canadian media with there head down, not crosby. ;) I think the biggest bust will be the Flyers

I think Crosby's got a couple of things going for him over the likes of Daigle - firstly, he's reportedly got a MUCH better attitude, which seemed to be the killer for Daigle. Secondly, he's got Mario to look after him - a guy that's had all the hype and pressure in his day and still succeeded. And thirdly, he should have a real challenge for top-dog spot among rookies with Ovechkin playing his first season this year too. I think John Buccigrass's prediction of 100+ points is a bit optimistic, but I expect to have a good season.

As for bust - I'm with J-Shera - specifically the Flyers defence.

It will be interesting, I mean if you can't get in shape to play for your country, what is the impetus to do so for one of your better friends? I meant to go see those guys workout today but decided to sleep in...

Keep in mind he'll be getting paid for this, unlike the world cup. Plus the WC was really cutting into his golf time.

Gretzky. I know its blasphemous to talk about him in a negative light, but for some reason I just don't think he'll have a good year. I just have a feeling that he'll be a bust.

Wasnt´t it him who said he didn´t like hockey he was just good at it? Anyway...has he ever looked like an athlete? No! Not sure how the lock out affected him but despite his shape and the fact he is 10 years beyond his peak I guess he will still be good for a couple more 20+ goal seasons and considering his age that is not too bad at all. I guess he will play more of an "Adreychuck role" on the Coyotes so to say. I don´t think you can call him bust. His production has gone down continuously over the years which is normal.

As for Crosby. Like J-Shera said it´s really too bad the media is calling him the next Gretz. Like they did with Spezza, Lecavalier, Daigle, Lindros, whoever. He will be a good player for sure but we all know there will be no one ever to come close to what what Gretz achieved and besides the skills the time of 150+ point seasons is not coming back either. I don´t think Crosby will "break" like Daigle and once he got used to the NHL he will be a point per game (or better) for sure. I just don´t see this happen right away and people may critizise him for this. i just hope for him he´ll handle it and live up to his talent.

Sorry if I sounded confusing. I meant this was something Hull said. Not Mario. As for his role I didn´t primarily think about leadership on the ice but beeing someone that you like to have around in certain game situations and sharing his experiance off the ice as well. I think he wouldn´t be close friends to Gretz if he was an all out ass off the ice.

From what I hear Keith Tkachuk has put on some weight, the number seemed way to high but assuming he is out of shape he won't be playing up to his top ten in league salary expectations.

Daigle was a bust years ago when he cracked.

How could anyone say he is going to be the biggest bust of this season? The Wild picked him off the scrap heap, paid him next to nothing, and he lead them in scoring last season. They are still paying next to nothing this season. He has no hype at all surrounding him.

The Wild have very little to lose on Daigle, even if his production was cut in half this year, I'd be hard pressed to call him a bust.

I'm thinking Modano. I can't put my finger on it, but I get the feeling the Stars would have been better off with him in Boston.

2nd choice would be J.S. Giegure. (I'm sure that's spelled wrong,) I think he was the biggest abuser of using giant pads in place of talent. I have a feeling he is going to suffer under the new rules.

Nobody was saying Daigle will be a bust this year. He was back then for sure. Personally I still think he can play well if he wants to and is given the chance to as well of course. In fact he is one player I started to like because of the way he came back.
