Marketing Zombies

At a time of the year when consumer spending is at its peak I found myself asking the question have we given into marketing? With production quality decreasing (in my opinion) have we placed style over substance. I am guilty of this myself as I sit here thinkng of getting new custom gloves only for the fact they look cool and I have a perfectly good pair. When I talk to old school guys and tell them how much I spend on sticks they look at me like I am crazy and ask do they make you better and I say I think it does. This all kinda came to me with the new warrior stuff. Inno never advertised but made a solid product and now looking at the big AD campaign by warrior I wonder if the product will suffer because of it. I was reading about the MSH pick up game and thought of the joke how long would it take to play that game. 3 hours, 1 hour to play and 2 hours to check out everybodies equipment and I would be one of them. I am not ranting just observing?

Sid, there's no doubt marketing has invaded our lives the past half-century and, because of market research, it's becoming increasingly targeted. I'm sure it will continue to get worse.

However, I don't agree that quality has necessarily decreased. I've been involved with Salming for close to two years now, and had used their products for about four years prior to that. The difference in quality is night and day, with the newer products better than those made six years ago. What I do think is happening is production costs have increased and some companies have tried to cut corners to keep costs flat.

I think they could continue to make products that are equally as good -- or even better -- but their marketing research has told them they won't sell at the higher price. :P

I am about to go buy a book while waiting for my flight on how we tie ourselves to brands...should be a good read...

Flavor Flav was the man..we used to see him in Hempstead when I was at Hofstra and when in Tampa we ran into him at a Chili's and had a couple beers talking about Long Island...Public Enemy blew U2 away the following night at the show..

Jimi Hendrix said it best: "are you experienced?, have you ever been experienced?" Saw him open for the Monkees at Forest Hills. I am that old.

That has to be one of the most amazing factoids of the rock era, that Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkees.

Great Reply

Flavor Flav and PE are the SHXT!

Back on topic though, yeah, I think the hockey industry has become so much more about marketing than about anything else. These new products aren't any better, IMO, but the hype tells us that they are, so the manufacturers can get away with charging an arm and a leg for what basically is an average product. (For example, top-of-the-line skates used to last much longer than 4-16 months.)

People are turning into sheep more and more every day.

It's hard to figure out what is hype and what is real improvement now. That's why we need not-for-profit sites like ModSquadHockey.

Well, I mean, its monopolistic competition. The products are pretty similar, so really the only thing the companies can do to get the consumer to buy their product over another is to hype it up/advertise like crazy for it.

I havnt seen any warrior Marketing in my area... besides what someone posted here I never would know about it.

I also think equipment has made great strides...primarily in protection vs light weight...I like many products, and I want two to three of each pad to have a different brand I like and also always like to have dry equipment... Gloves I am terrible about... I cant put away my Pro Tacks, barely use my XX's, bought Oakleys, sold em from no use, Jones'n for Salming PG1, but want some 5000 nylons...

3 helmets, 2 shins, 2 skates, 2 Elbows 8 OPS'S

I ony have 1 pair of pants...but currently have some in mind..

I could also care what anyone else uses, But I want to know what they think about what they have.

Yeah I would say Marketing works on me!
