Equipment Use

Recommended Posts

I know that most players in the NHL use Jofa equipment right...

But who are some of the others that dont, and what kind do they use

P.S. What type of protection equipment do Peter Forsberg and Markus Naslund use?

i thought they were all required to wear jofa elbow pads

Not required to wear jofa elbow pads, required to wear soft capped elbow pads. The hard capped ones were causing too many injuries or something along those lines.

I'm pretty sure Jofa came out with the soft cap ones first. But now a lot more companies make them so the players have a choice, although most still go with Jofas.

There are/were a lot of older models floating around but Jofa was the first to produce a high end pad with a soft cap. Most of the other designs are older low-mid level pads.

I love my hard cap CCM elbow pads though! :)

Yeah I love mineee! CCM old school elber pads haha

Ahh the nievety of youth...

Hard caps are not old school! They were just a fad. Before hard caps, there was only soft caps. Soft capped elbow pads are true old school.

When hard caps became the norm, I never switched. I'm still rockin a 16 year old pair of Canadiens. I bought them after damaging my elbow in a fall with too thin elbow pads. They've kept me safe from slashes, checks, and falls ever since.

Was there ever really a need for hard caps?

"Rule 23 Dangerous Equipment

1. The use of pads or protectors made of metal, or of any other material likely to cause injury to a player, is prohibited.

(NOTE) All elbow pads which do not have a soft protective outer covering of sponge rubber or similar material at least one-half inch (1/2") thick shall be considered dangerous equipment."

Really does not say if you can or can't use them

Prohibited means you can't use them. ;)

The Jofa elbow pad was designed with an air pocket between the inner liner and the hard cap. An air pocket between the liner and the old school elbow pad would not work. The foam doughnut was the only extra padding for the elbow to sit in with the old school elbow pad. Therefore, the hard cap plastic was successful as it contoured to the elbow. The hard cap was necessary for the elbow pad to work. The Jofa elbow pad was quickly known around the NHL as the "jawbreaker" for obvious reasons. After about 10 years the NHL decided to mandate the soft covering over the plastic on the elbow pad. BTW, Gretzky wore original Cooper EK-46 old school elbow pads his entire career. He also wore the Cooper SB-95 shoulder caps only.
