Mogilny Released By Devils

Recommended Posts

all those teams have cap issues

although wouldnt teams be able to pick him up at half the salary?

No, full salary when a player is waived. It's only half salary when a player is sent down and then called up. More likely is a buyout and another team signing him or Mogilny retiring.

Someone call the Hawks, they could use someone who can find the back of the net.

It's going to take more than a few has-beens to do that. They've already got LaPointe, another dusty player won't hurt.

It's full salary if he is claimed on waivers the first time. If he clears, the team can send him to the "A" (2 separate transactions...waivers doesn't automatically mean going to the AHL). If he is claimed on the way back up, the salary is split....

But because it is mid-season, you'd really only have to pay him half...but his whole salary would be on your cap the follwing year. You only pay against the Cap for the time that a player is on your roster...hence the up and downs to the "A" by players who DON'T have to clear waivers.

I'm officially no longer a Devils' fan. Looks like Lameirello forgot how to run an organization during the year layoff. The waive Mogilny, third in scoring, yet they hold on to Colin White. Is there something I'm missing? That guy passes the puck pretty well---unfortunately, it's to the wrong color jerseys. Looks like the Mickey Mouse Club is back in full force.

Mogilny has been very lazy this year...Taking too many notes from Malakhov...

As for Lou Lams, he has balls. He commented the other day; If he doesn't like how a high salary player is playing, put them on waivers- Few would take a risk to take a lazy player or player who gets too much $$ compared to his output. Watch the player pass through, and his choice is to live with the minors or retire. It saves money as well.

But for being so vocal during the negotiations and helping reshape the game, he certainly did not really seem to be ready for the year. He was over the cap at points, he didn't seem to worry about the new style of play, signed the wrong guys. It happens. 10 years of dominance, I would not quit on your team. I have seen much worse.

Saves cap space, the team still pays the contract.

Wake up Gainey!!! We need him in Montreal

An all Russian top line with Mogilny/Kovy & either Perezhogin or Kostitsyn (who is technically Belarussian) would be AWESOME!

Second line: Koivu/Zednik/Ryder

Third/Checking: Bulis/Bonk/Sunny or Plekanec (when healthy)

4th/Energy: Higgins/Begin/Ferland or Murray

They've still got Ribeiro & Dagenais (if they stay) to work in as needed...

That is lineup that could end this funk...if the lines were left together for more than 1 night.

Trade Ribs/Dags for a D-man. Someone solid, to hold it all together. Don't need a whole lot of "O" from the D. Markov and Souray seem to be doing that. Boullion & Rivet have played well...Dandy, Komi & Streit seem to be the question marks on D. Maybe Komi or Streit (or both depending who the trade ends up being) go to Hamilton instead of sitting.

You just may have somethingg there.

Off-topic but close, please tell me the Devils didn't really offer Langenbrunner and McGillis to MTL for Ribeiro.

wouldnt a buy out still hit the cap?

e.g. at the beginning of the year, teams could buy out players and not affect there cap, after the buy out deadline it would affect their cap.

could mogilny file a grevance with the union, and refuse to report to the "A" as this is a salary cap move?

They were still 900k under the cap with Mogilny on the roster according to some reports. Lou called it a "personnel decision" making it hard to prove it was strictly cap related. A buyout would count against the cap but this seems like they are trying to prompt him to retire or resign like Malakhov.

tampa has pulled a similar move with Andreychuk, which is silly to save, $400k?

why would any veterans sign with NJ or Tampa after the way they treated their players?

a sad side effect of the cap

What's even more sad is that he was excited to be back in Jersey and now it's the second time he got screwed over by them. The first being when they didn't think it was worth it to sign a guy that netted them 43 goals. If that's how you treat your third leading scorer that means that Rod Brind'Amour should be waived by Carolina.

He said/she said, which is why I was hoping it'd prove to be unfounded.
