Lemieux to announce retirement

Recommended Posts

Gone but not Forgotten. SUPER mario battled cancer, won 2 stanly cups and is in the top 10 all time goal scores.

The guy is legend and we will still be talking about him for years to come.

This guy never stays with his team when there is no hope. Just like 2 years ago when he played 9 games.

What a piece of work and a piece of something else as well

hahahaha wow, you really have a thing against the penguins eh?

Best player ever, cancer and a chronic bad back and he still was more of a player than the man who wore mario's number upside down.

Name a better player in Mario's Era?....Besides the great one himself, there is no one and the great one could even be argued...I wouldnt argue that, but some would.

Theo - I think that's a bit uncalled for. You want him to die out there?

Man i never realised he'd been through all of that. Kind of sad he had to go out mid season.

I'm sure there is someone shouting "out with the old and in with the new", but i'm not convinced Crosby will be filling his shoes. Not by a long shot

He was the most physically gifted man to ever play in the NHL. He had size, speed, hands and vision but it seemed like he never really loved the game or respected it like some of the other greats.

so does Crosby get the C now???? :P

I wouldn't be surprised. Of course they will need to trade at least half the team if that happens.

Back when the Nordique's used to exist, and my little hockey-knowledged parents would go watch them play Pitsburgh, they said that Mario just stood out. He was just head and shoulders above the rest.

theo this is the most disgraceful thing you ever said. even if it is your opinion its garbage. the guy has a messed up heart so he calls it quits. everything health wise that can go wrong has happened to him, yet he is still the greatest player of all time. Gretzky left the blues when they were struggling and went to the rangers, and left them too.

What you just said made me heated so much i lost it, i can't beleive you can even think of calling mario gutless.

I agree with the first part of your statement Chadd, I agree with your second part prior to his first retirement. When he came back I think it was because he really missed the game badly. When he came back he worked out harder on and off the ice than ever to get the most out of the couple seasons he had left. In my opinion, big difference between the old Mario who never worked out and smoked two packs a day.

C'mon Theo, the guy is looking at heart surgery which will require blood thinners for I believe he said one month before and two months after surgery. Pretty much impossible to play a contact sport while on blood thinners. Seems like the right time to call it a career as he obviously can't play anymore this year and with his skills diminshing obviously wouldn't be back next year.

I would assume Recchi will wear the "C"...Sid won't get it until they trade Recchi next month :P

the fact that he became owner of th epenguins when they wer ein trouble and cam eback after cancer should be enough to say he loved the game. Brett Hull never respected the game

with lemieux no longer playing and soon to be x-owner do you think he'll just kick Sid out of his house... can't see him as being a very good babysitter either from the way he screams as his own teammates... "shut the hell up and go to sleep you bitc*s..."

Theo, it's a bit hard to love something like hockey as if it's the only thing that matters after battling cancer or any other life threatening disease. A lot of the guys who love hockey that much also don't have everything in perspective. Hockey's great and all, but once you get married and have a family, that matters a whole heck of a lot.

That said, some of Mario's comments about the game have left a lot to be desired.

In one of the first interviews he did after announcing that he was submitting a bid to the bankruptcy court he admitted his primary reason for submitting the bid was to make sure he got his money back. I can understand that, it was a lot of money. I also think there may have been a time when he really missed the game and that it may have had something to do with his comeback.
