The Anaheim Mighty Ducks won't be "Mighty" starting next season.

The NHL team announced Friday it was changing its nickname from Mighty Ducks to just Ducks.

The team decided to make the switch after polling its fans, who said they supported the change.

Anaheim is also considering a uniform and logo change.

At the same time, the research found strong support generally for preserving the history of the team in some way.

"In selecting the name the Anaheim Ducks, we are respecting the heritage of a tremendous organization that has been a very important and visible part of the community, not to mention Western Conference Champions and a Stanley Cup finalist," said team owner Henry Samueli.

The Anaheim Mighty Ducks joined the NHL as an expansion franchise prior to the 1993-94 season. In 2003, Anaheim surprised hockey observers by advancing to the Stanley Cup final before losing to the New Jersey Devils.

Many hockey traditionalists cringed when the Walt Disney Company, the team's original owner, announced they were naming their club The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Disney was looking to capitalize on the popularity of its hit 1992 movie The Mighty Ducks by linking its new team with it.

Disney sold the Mighty Ducks to Samueli and his wife in 2005 for $75 million US.

No really, If you are going to go so far as to change the name, uniform, logo and ownership...couldn't you just go one step further and give the team a respectable name...?

I dont know how you can make a duck logo look tough without keepin the "mighty" part. I mean, if they make it have teeth and be scowling, then its just pissed off or rabid. Now if they kept "mighty" then people would know its mighty.

The owners want to keep respect to the heritage, thats why they won't change the name. Meh, my teams name is the "dawgs" hahaa!

I think Anaheim Ducks is a solid name. Being from Anaheim, I am happy with the decision.

Tony Tavares, the former Disney sports chief, said he considered Eisner's flirtation with calling the baseball team the Mighty Angels of Anaheim "the second-stupidest idea I've ever heard in the history of sports," with the Mighty Duck name at No. 1.

Sandy Litvack, Disney's corporate counsel and Eisner's chief lieutenant, said he cringed at the name too.

"I thought it was absolutely silly," Litvack said, "but it was my boss' name, so I really liked it.""

Yeah in the first movie the ducks had green and gold jerseys with blue pants. Ugly as sin! I hope they don't do that. I like their third jerseys , with the black.
