Question for the Refs

Recommended Posts

Alright, I used to be a ref, but i don't do it any more and if I could find my rule book (highly unlikely), I could probably answer this, but I digress.

A teammate of mine, for whatever reason chopped the tendon guards off of his S500s. In a game tonight, the ref told him that his skates were in violation of the modified equipment rule and that he couldn't wear them again after the game. I was just wondering to what extent this rule goes, because in all the years I've played the game, not once has this ever come up. This has been puzzling me because wouldn't swapping holders on your skates or changing the cage on your helmet or even getting new palms for your gloves be "equipment modification"? Someone please enlighten me...

tell him to just wear his socks down so it covers the top part of the skate.  maybe tape it if it slides up during a game

That came up in the locker room after the game. Either way it would show, and he's got a pair of Synergys (one of the all silver pairs, I don't know the number), but he likes his Missions much more. He has been wearing these all season and this has never been brought up before.

i used to wear an itech full face shield with out the chin guard and the refs would occasionally bug me about, saying you can't modify equipment when i played in california, in toronto no one cares...

you see guys with cages, with the bottom cut off turned in to a visor.. that would be much more dangerous, if they dont file down the sharp corners, could easily rip some one up in a collison..

another option is.. ask for a ruling from the league commisioner...

in my league we get effing penalties for our neckguards not showing fully or if our mouthguard isnt in our mouth all the way.

Quick story.

in my game two nights ago i got a 10 minute penalty for not having my mouthguard in all the way. I said to the ref "but that guy doesnt even have one in" he replies " so what if your wearing one it must be all in or dont wear one at all."

so i guess the rule in the book that states mouth guards are mandatory doesnt apply. only the non- existant one that states the proper positioning of a mouthguard

what about guys that wear their helmet with a visor and push it up like crosby does..

do those guys get penalties?

worse.. guy a guy on my team gets hit.. chin strap pops off.. the guy doesnt even know it, and gets 2 minutes for an undone chin strap..

i hate when refs send off players because their pant zippers are undone.

I feel sorry for you guys, Hockey has changed alot in the past 10-15 years. when I played Mouth guards were only a big deal and bantams and up you could fight..If need be. The other night I went to a high school game and the refs were calling everything. The players would cherp to each other and would get a penality...What the F! Hockey is a tough sport and is being Pusafied across the board. They need to let you younger guys just play the freakin game. But also I can't remember the last time I saw a fight in the NHL <_<

Fighting in my league used to be a game misconduct unless it was in the last 10 minutes of the game (then it would be a 1 game suspension). The same went for hitting from behind. Now both fighting and hitting from behind is automatic game misconduct and another 1 game suspension. its ridiculous, i just had a game to night and oneo f our players got thrown out 7 seconds in for a hit from behind, where he clearly let up when the player turned. then 2 coaches each got 4 games because the referee was anal.

If the high school players would spend as much time playing as they do talking smack it wouldn't be a problem. You want to play, that's fine, you want to swear at a guy all night who can't kick your ass for doing it, you can sit in the box.

As for the original question, There is no specific mention of removing a tendon guard in the USAH rulebook or casebook.

well guess what?

my league got a new rule that if you get 3 penalties your out for that game. 2+10=2penalties

2+2+10= 3=your out

2=1 penalty etc etc

My linemate my last game got the boot from the game becasue of a "hit from behind." He angled the guy into the boards, and the guy tried to spin off, turning his back, and he got the call because of that! then I had to serve the penalty because my coach was too stupid to put a useless player in the penalty box.

canada is extremely strict about hitting from behind. my team went to the states for a tournament, and hits from behind are fine if the player is against the boards. as long as its with the shoulder and the person isnt going to fall into the boards, it was allowed.

Yea it pisses me off too. My velcro on my ccms doesnt work so one of my zippers always comes unzipped and I have to tape it which I dont like.

I didn't think there was anything wrong with them, thanks for the clarification Chadd.

Cherping has always been part of the game unless you are 6. Even now I play in a good competitive leauge and we play teams that can't stand each other for one reason or another and it's just part of the game...throws them off there game. And growing up I cherped alot and never got penalties for it; Was never looked down at from peers, coaches or parents. But the game has simply changed not because of the talented motivated hockey players ;because of the liberals that run the leauge that feel thay may affend someone if the game is played the way it was intended.

Over here in englad the refs are seriously inconsistent. ive seen where both players mutually drop the mits and take the lids off and fight and then get 5 + game penalty, but also where a guy attacks a player ripping their lid off and gets 2+2.

Also we have a rule over here which is rarely enforced and that is that u get an extra 10 min misconduct if you DONT take your helmet off to fight <_<

In high school if your helmet wasn't strapped or if you didn't have your mouthguard in, the refs would give you one warning and if you didn't fix it fast you would get sent back to the bench. If you were missing a strap or your mouthguard, the refs wouldn't let you on the ice until you got one.

My understanding that has alot to do with insurance. The rinks have to pay a hefty insurance premium and the more they let slip the more they will be screwed if something happens. The leauge we play in if you play NHL rules and full contact we pay more in insurance per person then the non-contact leauges..But then again we are a private leauge. And when we fight we must remove are helmets or we get a 2+10

There is nothing specific about tendon guards, however, there is leeway for referees if they feel a modification creates the possibility of injury to players.

Those are in the rule book and it has been a focus during clinics over the last few years.

I don't have a problem with the mouthguard and helmet strap rules. Sometimes its funny. One kid took five tries to get his mouthguard in, and then when he did get it in the ref sent him to the bench for taking to long. :P
