I'm a huge fan of Swedish Death metal and my all time favorite has to be At the Gates. Also check out older In Flames (Whoracle, Jester Race), Entombed and Hypocrisy.

I used to hate Slipknot so bad, but since I had a listen to Vol 3, I was really impressed, amazing riffs, good lyrics and I started to like them more and more, it's not all about yelling and bad drumming like people think, they really are good musicians.

This might be mainstream metal but try the group Stratovarius, esp. their song "Maniac Dance", I really like it even though I listen to a little softer stuff {The Fully Down, Chiodos}

I've been playing guitar for a long time now and playing slipknot is just ridiculous. I admire slipknot for understanding that the market is full of unhappy wannabee extreme teens that don't give a fuck if the music is actually good, all they want is low, brutal, distorded guitar, blasted drums and harsh screaming. Then they think they're "extreme" and it's a good way to get their frustration out. Slipknot is a good band with all their masks, etc, people love em but the music and the musicians simply sucks. Anybody can do it. No joking.

Not all of there musicians suck, Slipknots drummer is amazing, the rest of them blow.
