myst3ry 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2006 I was just wondering if someone could give their opinion on this.. How much hockey do you think you should play before your overdoing yourself or overexercising? Each week I have 3 games, and last month in between games, or sometimes on game days I would get on the ice for an extra 2 hour practice/skate several times a week.. Sometimes on the ice 5-6 times a week.. However, when game day comes around, I feel sloppy and slow.. Recently I took a few weeks off and just concentrated on the 3 games a week I play and i've felt the best and quickest in a long time..I read a post a while ago saying that Crosby would play 6 hours a day when he was with Rimouski(sp).. I figure Crosby knows better than I do, but just wondering on some of your opinions on this.. Or why I feel better when I relax, instead of getting extra ice time.. Chadd 916 Report post Posted February 25, 2006 You need time off between games. If you're playing hard every day you will wear down a little bit, especially if you have work or school in addition to the ice.
Fire0nIce228 1 Report post Posted February 25, 2006 Well obviously your body gets tired and needs time to rest and refuel and repair in slight injuries you might sustain. I know that one week I had a tournament for 2 different teams at the same time, so 6 games and 4 or so practices in a span of 6 days was pretty crazy. I'd say if your getting adequate rest, food, and water you'd be okay to be on the ice everyday.

Nelly 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2006 I took this semester off from college to focus more on hockey and am just working full-time. I am typically on the ice skating, messing around, or playing about 10-12 times a week. Sometimes that number drops as I whip out the inlines or bike on the warmer days. I adjusted my diet to include more protien, carbs, fruits, veggies, and water along with the 10 hours of sleep I've been getting a night and it seems to be working fine for me. If I find myself getting exhausted, I'll just take a day or two off and just lay around and drink lots of water. Hope that helps!
UMWhockey 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2006 When you no longer look forward to getting on the ice, then it is time to take some time off. Hockey at every level needs to be fun, and once it is no longer fun to be on the ice you need to step back and take a break
Nick23 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2006 I will be on ice for 4 trainings a week, then a game or two pretty much every weekend, i DO NOT get enough sleep, will be 6 hours at least but 9 maximum, so my concentration at school and on the ice does deteriorate. But at hockey school was on the ice for 4-5 hours a day with off ice, i was getting around 9 hours sleep a night and was feeling good for the 2 weeks. Sleep is the key

I'm betting that during those six hours he wasn't skating hard the whole time. I'm betting he spent a better amount of the time working with a puck and shooting and stuff.Personal note... damn he's lucky to be able to get that much ice. My school kicks me off if I go on during my open blocks during the day.

If i had a rink at my school i would live there! I do live here... and they get mad when I go on the ice... I don't get it! Our Athletic Director is a tool. More importantly though, I break into the rink after they melt it in the spring in order to play roller and shoot pucks. :D
Nick23 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2006 Haha sounds great. I dont understand if no1 is using the ice they should let you on. I think i may just have to get a job as a rink manager so when it is free i will be on the whole time
A_Steeves12 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2006 i find that if i have like 4 games in 5 days it really takes a toll on my body. i find myself being more cranky then usual, ill always be tired and sore too.
sherwood21 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2006 Last year I was playing upwards of 9 times a week, every week. It definitely took its toll on me, but I got so much practice and so much icetime I can't complain. This year my team has praccy every day, the days we don't have practice we have games..so I'm on roughly 10 times a week, with our morning skates on game days it adds up to that. I never get sick of it really

Oh well, I guess if they want to make a reputation for trust fund babies and mediocre athletics like prep schools that are a dime a dozen, go ahead.
Miike 1 Report post Posted February 27, 2006 Earlier on this year i was on the ice almost every day of the week, sometimes twice a day for 2-3 hours. Playing for 2 teams, then just drifted away from Highschool, stuck to AAA Midget, i fell behind on some school work and stuff, which is not a good thing for those in school, and also i was always tired, never had much energy. If i had a rink at my school i would live there! keep complainging....my practice rink is 45 min. away and home rink in chicago, 2 hour away I dont have a problem with too many games. You may get tired, but when hockeys your life there shouldnt be a problem. I just wanna play. Actually this whole week is my teams play offs and we're in 3 different leagues so we've had a game each night for the last four nights and still coming. Thats not counting roller. I love going to a roller tourny and signing up for several ages or divisions. Thats the funnest, when you got like 3 games a day.
Eagles39 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2006 I know Ive had enough hockey when I dont feel like playing anymore. That time is right about now for me, and thankfully me team only has 2 games left.
slaw 1 Report post Posted February 28, 2006 Scientifically yes there is such a thing but personally last year I was on the ice 8 times a week only 5 days a week (you do the two a day math) and I loved playing that second game later on in the night I just felt so loose and ready to go. Seemed to work too
spinwax 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2006 My question is: How do you guys find the time or money to play that much???I work full time, and have a wife that needs some of my time (LOL) and its hard to get out on the ice every day or every other day for that matter. I try to get on my ice skates 2-3 times a week, and my inlines 3-4 times a week.First off, ice time is not cheap here. 7 bucks for stick and puck, and open hockey in the middle of a week day, and league play can cost upwards of 250.00 for 10 or so games. That all adds up if you go as much as I would like too. Lucky for me, I have at least a park with a nice cement rink, if I cant make it to the ice. The money thing is really not a big deal (but I wish it was cheaper), but I wonder how some of the younger players that may not be working full time afford it?My facility is at least a good 30 minutes away as well. Not fun to drive after a 10 hr day of work.Maybe Im at that age (32) that it is hard to get the time to go out and skate. Im sure some of you guys that get to skate on the ice every day are still in school, young, etc.I dont want to hear "if you want to skate you will find the time". I work a good 45-50 hrs a week, not including my other business time used to buy and sell property, work on the house, keeping up with house chores (cleaning, painting or whatever), and spend time with my wife.Last but not least. Most of the rinks around my area dont even offer that many opportunities for me to skate. There is public skating going on, figure, pee wee, midget, etc. All together, there is probably only 2 times a day there would be an opening for someone in my age group to skate. League play at night for 60 minutes and maybe some stick and puck in the middle of the day.Maybe I should buy a house next door to the rink...LOL

DigDug 5 Report post Posted March 1, 2006 Wow. Some of you must be public skate guards to get that sort of ice access time?I'm an attorney and I just don't have the time to get to the rink more than once a week. 5-6 times a week, with an extra 3 hours of skating before games? Damn. The question is: what *else* do you do besides being on the ice?

Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 1, 2006 Once yo get a real job, it's hard to get much ice and still do all of the other things that you have to do. I ref and get a lot of extra ice time that way and it helps pay for my addiction.
