Orpicks hit on Erik Cole

Anyone see this? It was totally uncalled for and Cole had to go from the Hospital. Cole was 3 ft from the boards and Orprick, um I mean Orpick, hots him from behind at full speed. What a cheapshot

Although probably cheap, it's about time a penguin actually showed ANYTHING other than just coasting around going through the motions. He's the only one that's seemed to care all year.

I've only seen shorts of it, but it really looked like Orpik just overpowered him. Cole stopped and pivotted a foot away from the boards, losing his own balance, and Orpik was already working him towards the boards. More of a wrong place, wrong time, than intent to injure in my opinion. I mean, what could he have done to prevent it?

Who's this Cole's B/F? You need to stop taking other people's lives so seriously and do something with your own. There's nothing Orpik could have done. He read the play wrong. He thought Cole was going to cut left quick, but when Cole stopped there was no room for Orpik to stop.

How was it a cheapshot? Cole was driving wide, Orpik was forcing him to the outside, Cole pivots, loses his balances, while Orpik is leaning on him, and goes head first into the boards. Orpik's only other option was to stop leaning on him, which isn't a good idea in the NHL.

This wasn't even a hit though, and really, it was necessary. When you play Defense, you block lanes with your body. Orpik was working him towards the boards like good D are supposed to. Cole got unlucky, lost his balance and wasn't able to protect himself. There was no intent to injure at all on Orpik and he wasn't doing anything "Dangerous" either.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: It is a dangerous game. Cheap shot or not, intentional hit or not: Hockey is a dangerous game. Don't ever forget it when you step on the ice. It could be over in a second.

I saw the hit and feel sorry for Cole to suffer a broken neck. Orpick was playing the game and doing his job. Sometimes these guys go over the edge and sometimes you don't know where the edge is. I'm not saying this is what happened but Dick Butkus was a Chicago Bears Hall of Fame middle linebacker in the 60s who had a saying: "Hit'em to hurt'em." These guys are men and they know the risk involved when they sign the contract. And guys, it can happen on any play, anytime, anywhere on the ice. I am still really sorry to see this happen but NHL hockey is a job, not a game the way you might want to think it is.

Too bad for Cole, not exactly a fan but he has been having a great year and this is the worst time for him to get hurt. Hopefully he has a full and speedy recovery, haven't seen the hit so I won't comment on it at this point.

Nice post, real classy . I don't agree that it was Coles fault by any means, but it wasn't a cheapshot either. I just watched the replay and it sure didn't look like it was Orpik's intention to injure Cole in any way. The play happened so fast in real time there is no way Orpik could have let up on him. He had him lined up and right before he hit him Cole looked down because the puck ended up in his skates. Had that not happened Cole's head would have been up and chances are he would not have gotten hurt. Unfortunately he did get hurt and hopefully he can make a fast a full recovery.

they were both leaning on each other pretty hard, cole used his back and body to shield the puck, and orpick was trying to pin him against the boards. a shart pivot to try and free himself and cole tripped up, and all the tension got released and cole when into the boards in a real bad position. its like two people pulling on a rope, when one lets go the force sends the other one flying. in this case it was a push though

Orpik IS known for his hitting - but at the same time he probably expected cole to protect himself more than he did.

You could argue that orpik should have tried to slow up - but i bet he honestly had no idea what cole was going to do and was just trying to throw a solid check.

It is unfortunate that it happened and would think orpick feels sorry for it - this is normally where you hear about him visitng him in the hospital after the game or something - but i havent read anything so i dont know if it happened.
