Rivets loosening

Recommended Posts

Some of the steel rivets on my skates keep loosening. They haven't rusted. I have been re-flattening the rivet flares with a screwdriver, but I'm afraid that they are getting weaker with all that bending.

I was wondering if some copper rivets on the toes would hold better.

Yes, get some extra copper rivets put in. I am extremely hard on my skates and often have problems with breaking rivets loose. Copper rivets are the only things that save me from having to have skates fixed every week.

As everyone else here has said, yes, copper rivets offer far better logevity (they are stronger and don't rust). But... they can be a pain to get off (from what I understand) and if you need them in the toe regions of the boot they're hard to get on (I used to have a pair of 752's that the rivets kept popping off on so I had copper put in all around. Glad I never broke the chasis after that as it would have been a beee-autch to get off).

Don't some skate brands use a bolt? I've got a pair of Externos that are pulling the front rivets out on a regular basis. Neither of my LHS know how to put copper in the front. I've thought about putting a button head bolt in the front pair.

Eh, thanks for the responses guys. I always thought the copper rivets were for the big guys. Hopefully my holders won't break for a while.

While copper is stronger, IMO you need steel rivets to hold the holder in place. Coppers are held in by compression, but they don't grab. Steel rivets have grapels so to speak, and there is less lateral movement of the rivet, and the holder does not shift. I would leave the steel rivets in there an add two coppers to the front, just behing the two front ones.

OK, the two just to the back of the front ones are the ones that start unzipping for me.

Thanks again...

That's exactly how I have mine set up. Just put two copper rivets in last two holes (one on each side) of the front part of the holder.
