Certified Stickers on helmet?

Recommended Posts

When I played in highschool, after September 11 our coach gave everyone on the team American flag stickers to put on our helmets. They were the same exact sized circles as the certified stickers, so naturally we all placed them there. We all played the rest of the season with them on and never heard a word from any ref. It never even crossed my mind until I saw this thread. I couldn't imagine a ref telling us not to wear the American flag stickers after 9/11!

well i just found a black model car paint at Wallmart and i just put it on the helmet, you see a little difference but thats only from real close up works really good, and if its too dark add a little bit of water not alot like a little drop and it makes it less dense and less black if your helmets older.

Kid asks how to take stickers off, and this turns into 3 pages of people either wearing them or not.

I agree with Duder. I also use some kind of heat source to melt the glue. I use my heat gun that I use for blade changes. Aim it at the stickers for a few seconds, then take a thin instrument like a pin or flat-head screwdriver and peel it off little by little. Be careful not to overheat the sticker, cuz it will melt or cause the plastic of the helmet to bubble. I then take a little nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol and remove the excess residue.

Never use chemicals on a helmet.

I'm a certified level 3 Referee in Ontario and i also play Junior B and the stickers arent that big a deal unless you get an idiot for a ref who feels like he can call everything. ever notice how alot of Guys in junior and the NHL dont have them? just try to keep the CSA one on. you will know when your helmet expires cause the padding will be falling on your head. also if yuo want to take them off i used to heat mine up just a tiny bit with the stove jsut hold it over the element and then they peel off with no residue at all.

Never had a problem with the chemicals. But I have overheated and caused damage that way.

Pro rules are very different from recreational hockey for a number of reasons. I just hate the idiots who modify their helmets, then sue when they get hurt. It happens every year.

yah that true, but one other question about helmets, is taking the ear pieces off your helmet legal in major junior and other leagues, i know minor hockey your not allowed but what about the other ones??

i wouldnt really reccomend taking it off just because i know a few people who got called on not having a sticker and there parents were pretty pissed. besides whose really looking at your helmet when your playing so why should you care how it looks

Goo Gone works (tho its a chemical and can mar the plastic) as does that organic "orange" cleaner/degreaser stuff.

I used the orange stuff and it takes a bit more effort to get it off but the plastic looks unharmed.

I was under the impression that the NHL Shield shows that it was an NHL certified piece of equipment.
