Flames' McCarty files for bankruptcy

Recommended Posts

unfortunate, and his wife is a jerk, but you'd think he (or his agent) would see the warning signs and consolidate his debt/stop gambling at casinos before it got to this stage

When you go bankrupt do you have to pay anything after it?

It depends on the type of bankruptcy you file . Someone such as him with the money he makes will most likely have to pay a percantage back .

I was a little surprised given his music career, and constant pumping of "grinder" as well. Then I look at the guy, and it's not so surprising anymore.

From Wikipedia:

The primary purpose of the laws of bankruptcy are: (1) to give an honest debtor a "fresh start" in life by relieving the debtor of most debts, and (2) to repay creditors in an orderly manner to the extent that the debtor has the means available for payment.

Bankruptcy allows debtors to resolve debts through the division of non-exempt assets among creditors. Additionally the declaration of bankruptcy allows debtors to be discharged of most of the financial obligations, after their non-exempt assets are distributed, even if their debts have not been paid in full. During the pendency of a bankruptcy proceeding, the "debtor" is protected from extra-bankruptcy action by creditors by a legally imposed "stay."

Basically, it gets the crediters (collectors) off your back! :o

"According to court documents, McCarty received $538,729 from the Red Wings when they bought out his contract, but his ex-wife Cheryl received 75 percent of that -- $404,046."

I don't consider that splitting the money. He is still making $850K a year with the Flames so he isn't poor but he has ran up gambling and other debts in the amount of $6+ million.

I don't get what's terrible about it. Unfortunate, maybe, but not terrible. How many people here make significantly less money than he did/does and don't go tits-up financially? I feel as bad for him as I would a lottery winner that goes broke and offs themself.

Especially considering that a large portion of his debt is due to gambling. I did hear his wife dicked him pretty well in the divorce settlement, though.
