sdcopp 1 Report post Posted May 1, 2006 caught a shot right under the right eye shortly after I truned 18 and got to play w/o a cage/full shield. I looked like Quasimodo from disney's Hunchback for about a week, and during my last week as a senior in HS that year. Poor freshman kid who did it was scared to death I was gonna beat his ass the next day.
Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted May 1, 2006 It was on an actual pond? We usually don't have the chance to get pucks up that high on the pond and we usually just dangle, so that doesn't happen too often. I got a high stick in the chops last week, mostly damaged the inside of my mouth and some minor cuts on the outside. So nothing compared to yours. Mine was late in a roller hockey game wearing a half.Glad your okay, that looks awful. Did it knock you out?

dix0r 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2006 a friend of mine took a slapshot right behind his ear during warmup...he stayed conscious but couldn't see anything for a while...he had a pretty bad concussion, and post concusssion issues for almost two years. said he'd look from right to left and whatever new thing he was looking at would take a while to "catch up" to the old image, if that makes sense...kind of hard to explain i guess.but he didn't get 3 layers of stitches...damn! TBLfan 25 Report post Posted May 1, 2006 i took a slapper with a roller puck that opened up a 2/3" gash on the ridge of my eyebrow. Not nearly as bad as yours tho, glad you're ok.
Neal 41 Report post Posted May 1, 2006 Yeah, getting clanked at an open skate is what made me start wearing a half shield. I took 3 sticks to the face in 2 shifts. I was a big believer in the "I know when its likely I'll get a stick or puck in the face and I can duck/block" theory. Those two shifts convinced my my theory doesn't work so well when you have guys who a- have always worn a full shield or b- a low skill level and are likely to flail their sticks around for balance when falling or c- absolutely no control over their shot and no idea where it is going. There are regulars at our open skate that I won't go close to in the corner for fear of knocking them off balance and taking a stick in the noggin. There are also regulars who part the D like the Red Sea when they wind up for a shot.
zingbergeur 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2006 I had a roller hockey ball deflect off of a stick and directly into my eye a couple years ago. I immediately lost my vision in that eye and freaked out. I broke some blood vessels in the eye, and my vision slowly came back about 24 hours later. My pupil is permanently dialated, and I always need to wear sunglasses outdoors. So thats why I always wear a cage...but I'm thinking about trying a tinted visor for playing casual, outdoor roller hockey in the summer. usahockey22 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2006 Damn...you're lucky that didn't take out your eye. Guess you learned your lesson about the shield the hard way, but good thing it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

notorious#29 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2006 Thankfully, I have never taken a puck to the head that required a visit to the hospital. I did get clocked pretty good playing street hockey though. Me and a few buddies were shooting around, waiting for a few other guys to show up. I was standing well off to the side of one net, talking to a few other guys, while two other guys were doing one timers. One of my buddies went to take a one timer, the puck was rolling, so when he took the shot, he missed the net by a mile, and the puck hit me square between the eyes. It knocked me flat on my ass, then I blacked out for a good five minutes or so. Thankfully since the puck was rolling, it wasn't travelling to fast. So the worst of my injuries was a killer headache, and huge lump on my forehead for a couple days.
Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted May 2, 2006 Any chance we could see an updated picture? I just want to see what you look like a few days after, the lump/bruising and such.

seaner7633 2 Report post Posted May 2, 2006 i took a puck just to the side of my eyebrow at a pickup session one time. wasn't even a hard shot, the guy just did the backhand-toe on the ice- flick kind of shot, but it caught at just the right spot to open me up. only eleven stitches...not too bad. Went to the half-shield after that for a while. Got tired of the shield after a while and took it off. Then, i was watching HBO and saw the piece on Bryan Berard and his injury, and decided to go back to the visor....it has saved me quite a few times since.I have a side question to ask that is kinda related...how many people have or know others that have a small scar just to the side of their eye(s).... I've always had one on my left, from falling off the bed as a kid, then I have one on the right from the puck mentioned before. Having them myself, I started noticing that a lot of people have those type of scars. I always ask people about it, and for most, it is the same type of thing... some sort of spill from when they were a kid. Just curious.

gavin 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2006 My name is Darren Mcarty and I just got hit in the head with a puck last night. *not*I've always managed to catch or block any puck that comes near my face, but a buddy of mine once swallowed a puck during warmups for a big home game, he was skating behind the net and a freshman let er rip from the point. Needless to say his fiancee was freaked out, but he only lost like 3-4 teeth and I think we found 2 and shoved them down deep enough and they stayed in. But he had to get reconstruction for the other 2.
Ti-girl 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2006 I haven't ever taken a puck to the head since I have to wear a full cage, but I have taken a lacrosse ball in the face.I took off my helmet to adjust something and the ball flew off the post and hit me in the face.No stitches, didn't break anything, just had a bit of a shiner. awall 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2006 I wear a half & Half (Itech FX-50) so I've been fairly lucky, I did once have one guy try to pass a puck over my head once, he misjudged and it hit my helmet and bounced out.My most recent injry is a hairline fracture on my left index finger, I got this one during warmups where I scored my 2nd career goal against Drew's team. I was being stupid and clearing pucks from behind the goal and our captian fired off a slapper that went wide. I saw it coming and didn't want to take it in the gut so I moved my "thickly padded" glove in the way. Discovered my Vapor XX's aren't padded enough for that. I finished the game, got my goal and then went to the ER a few hours later.
