for many years was the face of the wings it will be sad to see him go. when he hangs up his skates he can should just go to the HHOF. it will a shame he wont get to 700 career goals(692). he most likely the last player to only play for one team. as the older guys retire we will be seeing an end to an era of hockey. team loyality lost in favor of money.

he has said since the break that he knows what hes going to do but won't say publicly.

I think you're going to see Sakic and Kolzig retire without playing for another franchise.

BEST PLAYER EVER! thats all i have to say about him great leader n great plyer definatley my favourite!

Not the best ever, but in the top 25 or so.

add lidstrom to that list aswell. those three could (i use that very losely) still move on but most likely wont. but i can say it for certian if yzerman retires.

I think he is done. It will be a shame to see him go. I can't say a bad thing about the guy, even if he did eliminate us a few times. Had he not bought into the defensive scheme, he would have had a lot more goals. But would he have the cups?? He definately belongs in the top 25 players list. How long till the wings retire his jersey is the tough question. He will definately get inducted in 3 years once eligible.

All good things come to an end...

When he started with the Wings, they were the "Dead Things", losers. He persevered and helped turn the franchise around. Same opportunity for Crosby and Ovechkin now.

Stevie can't physically handle another season. At least he went out playing well, He was one of the Wings top three guys for the playoffs IMO, and he was excellent in his last dozen or so games of the season. To bad he just came short of 700 goals.

yzerman seems like the kind of guy that would keep going until fell over dead.

I hope they waive the 3 year wait period for his HOF induction.

After Wayne they said they wouldn't do it anymore. Considering the fact that they made Bourque wait, nobody is going in right away anymore.

After watching the last play in the game last night I would think it would be time for him to retire. The player walked right around Steve. Steve couldn't move laterally and it made him look like a pylon. That's not how he wants to be playing the game.

Great guy and great career. He finished up the regualr season strong. He should go out with his head held high waiting for the call to the hall.

i wouldn't rule out him being done right away. in an interview at the end of the season, he said that he was feeling better than he ever has in recent years, and that he wasn't sure if he was done or not. with the early exit, and plenty of time to recover, i wouldn't be surprised if he showed up for one last kick at the can.

You barely knew anything about Mess by the time you liked hockey anyway, I guess it would be silly.

Well you can't go wrong with either player, but look at what Mess had in his prime to play with. That's what I go with, even if Mess got a couple rings post-Gretzky.

Yzerman had plenty of talent, he skated with Probert on his line for a while.

I'd like to see Yzerman hit 700... just because. It wouldn't make sense for him to come back for a personal accomplishment when he's been a team guy for so long.

He's had a very good carreer and has proven his leadership abilities and skill time and time again. To compare him to other players is fine, but let what he has accomplished stand on its own as well.

23 seasons, over 1700 points, Lester B. Pearson award, Conn Smythe trophy, Masterton trophy, Selke trophy, 10 All-star games, 3 Stanley Cups. He's also played for Team Canada once or twice. ;)

I remember back in the day it was the deady Burr-Yzerman-Ysaebert line.

I personally dont think he should come back, but i think he will... like it was said earlier, he was one of those guys who will keep playing till he falls over dead... he is by far my favorite player but watching him play, i just dont think he can keep up for another season, too physically demanding for him...but than again look at Chelly...

I honestly don't think he'll retire. But who knows, we won't find out until late June as he said in an interview that was on NHL.com .

But... who do you guys think would take the C and the As. I think Shanny or Lidstrom would be Captain, and then either Shanny or Lidstrom as one of the As and maybe Zetterberg as the other. I think in the long run though, Zetterberg is going to end up as captain.

Playing despite of his injury leads me to think he is likely finished. In terms of the captaincy, it is pretty much understood that Zetterberg is the future captain. Depending on how he feels about the position I would either just make him the captain now or let him gradually become more of a leader by having Lidstrom take the role for a few yearsand giving Zetterberg the A left vacant.
