Showoffs at the rink

Recommended Posts

Doing a pet peeve speech for class. And I need 3 sources, so I figure I'd do a survey for one. But my pet peeve is the showoffs and the people who act like butts at drop-ins, open skates, and stick and pucks. Just want to know what antics you find really annoying and how much does it bother you and things like that. Thanks

Personally, hate the guys who strut in with their $$$$ equipment and proceed to flaunt it to everyone. Also hate the guys who think they know it all. Lastly, hate the guys who think they're the shiz and proceed to trash everyone elses play.

I never really thought about it. The guys who try to show off only make themselves look dumb so I don't really care about that. And the people who have expensive gear doesn't bother me at all because gear doesn't mean a thing, just that you have more money than me. Won't necessarily make you a better player.

Pretty much I agree with you... The pople who act like they know a lot are annoying. The people who try to show off or act like their the best in a pick up game. The casuals (people who play once a week or once a month) are there for fun. Then you get the players who play a lot (5+ times a week) acting like they're the best because they get to skate a lot. While they may be the best, they don't need to act like it, it will show in the game.

Just my opinion, hope it helps. good luck on your speech.

The #1 thing that pisses me off is guys who show up late to shinny and proceed to come on the ice, stretch, skate around a bit, maybe take a few shots on the goalie.....while the game is going on! If you are late, stretch in the room if you have to.

Or people who take stupidly long shifts when there are people on the bench waiting to come on.

Can't stand guys who go wild playing shinny or mens league. Mens league has more of those characters. My pet peeve at shinny is when a guy who is better hogs the puck and shoots alot. I play more than the average guy since I'm on a college club team but I just enjoy getting out and playing a little pick up once and a while. If you or someone else is better than everyone else I think you should distribute the puck and get the other guys invloved, make it more fun for everybody.

I couldn't agree more with OkSt.

The guys who aren't as good are out there trying to get better so give them a chance by distributing the puck more.

1. Guys who show up 10 minutes late and try to avoid paying, until the rink manager opens the Zam doors and threatens to kick everyone off.

2. Guys who show up with their buddies, and won't pass the puck to anyone else.

3. Guys who won't change jerseys in order to even up the sides, even when it's obviously a blowout (see #2).

4. Guys who won't pass to ANYONE, and constantly try to go end to end with the puck.

5. Guys who go full speed in the offensive zone, but after they turn it over don't play defense and just coast back waiting for someone to bail them out and make the long pass to them waiting outside the blue line.

6. Guys who help themselves to my water bottle on the bench but won't bother to bring their own or volunteer to go fill it between shifts.

7. Guys who just won't come off the ice, but won't go full speed at both ends either.

I really hate people who take long shifts and then act like they can't hear you when you yell at them from the bench.

I also can't stand the guys who take drop in seriously. Nothing like getting crossed checked in the back with no shoulder pads on because the douche bag playing D thinks it's the Cup finals, or the guy screaming at a lower skilled player for making a mistake, or the guys who try to match up lines. It's a friggin pick up game, get a life.

I hate it when girls come in, have just started playing, can barely skate and have $200 sticks.

They can't even stick handle or shoot, but they HAVE to have the best.

I hate when stick and puck gets taken over and pickup breaks out.

I am still in the learning stages, and use stick and puck to practice skating with the puck, in gear, practice shooting, practice different things that are hard to practice in a pickup session and guys come in and basically turn it into a pickup game.

It pisses me right the hell off

So ... if guys come in who have just started playing and THEY have $200 sticks, and can't even stick handle or shoot, you're OK with that?

Sorry, just had to. I have a daughter who plays. :D

1. Guys who come to play pick up roller at an outdoor lacrosse box but don't bring blades. A runner can't keep up, and is a hazard to the guys on wheels

2. Lazy players who float between the blue lines. No good on d, no help on o.

3. Negative/Bad Attitude. Example: One player in my league acts like he's God's own gift to hockey. He can dish it out, but gets the whole sulky tough guy routine going whenever he gets out muscled or out hustled - "You're an idiot! You can't skate!" and throws some cheap shots the rest of the game. God forbid his team doesn't win - at the first sign of falling behind, he stops trying and floats around. I'd hate to have to play catch-up with a loser like that on my team.

Just my $.02

1) People who play long shifts in pickup (is 6 minutes a long shift?)

2) People who score 5 goals in pickup then don't pass. For gods sakes, if your trying to work on a new move that's fine, but scoring over and over on the same move, give me a break.

3) How about those that take high slap shots when you are taking your turn clearing the pucks out of the net before the goalie gets on the ice!!!!

I've been lucky so far, most people help me out when I have questions. I just don't talk to the puck hogs.

I agree with the long shifters. I hate that.

I also hate it when people bust your balls for skating hard. I believe they're confusing it with the whole "taking it too seriously" mindset. I'm out there for fun and exercise, so I make sure I'm skating hard. No checking, no hacking, no contact, but still.... and it's usually the guy that's been on the ice for his 10+ minute shift.

My other pet peeve is when I get to the rink, and public skate is going on. Trying to maneuver around the clusters of people, who fail to see me and my giant bag. Especially the "thug" wannabes who refuse to get out of my way as they walk by. oh well.

8. Guys who get accidentally tripped or hooked, and there was no real malice intended by the offending player, but the guy lies there on the ice like Darcy Tucker, looking like he's just been shot.

1. playing half-ice shinny because someone's birthday party has the other half

2. getting yelled at when the puck crosses the red line (see #1)

3. guys who can't shoot at all but take slappers because they think they look cool. all the noise comes from them bashing the ice, the puck only moves like 5mph.

Guys entering adult-hood, I use that term very nicely here, that come in droves with their buddies. Group mentality takes over and they all act like EMENEM.

Only one slim shaddy guys :)

No, its just that I play with girls, and the guys I play with play in the WHL.

Oh I also hate it when we do a split team (half guys, half girls) and the guy either won't get off the ice or won't pass to any girls because, well, we're girls.

THEN they get even more pissed when three of us go in on a 3 on 3 break out, deke them out of their pants, and score.

you guys deke WHL players out of their pants?

My pet peeves are tommy talks alot, you get to the rink and he's telling stories about his cup of coffee in the show and he can barely skate. Also i was pretty bitter when i got stuck in the balls.

Not for split teams. We usually play mens "C" teams. The guys come to do some stick and puck with our team.

Meaning they're there to coach us and give us tips. It's great and they really help. Especially the younger guys and the Euros.

Mainly cuz they're there to impress us.

1. People that come to open hockey and start playing like it’s the Stanley cup while the rest of us are playing for fun at open.

2. People that try to pull the Michigan during tournaments

I hate it when you're playing shinny on an outdoor rink (like full-ice shinny, good passing, dangling etc) and then a bunch of dorks who know some of the girls that are playing show up and try to dominate. They can't keep their pants on their waist but they have million dollar gloves for shinny and each of them has some ratzle datzle move to make him feel less significant, but they can't keep up with me or any of my buddies and they can't even receive passes well, much less make them. Eventually they lure the girls away with (empty) promises of weed, cause apparently those are the kind of guys that girls want to hang with instead of playing hockey.

Oh well I guess that leaves more ice for some fast skating and saucer passes. I don't think there is anything more fun than high-intensity shinny.
