McCabe Resigns

Recommended Posts

Good news for the Leafs, they probably would have made the playoffs had McCabe not been hurt for 9 games. Let's see if they can get a sniper now to play with Sundin.

I heard on TSN it was 5 years 25 million.

I knew this was going to happen, but I hope the Leafs don't stop here. A Willie Mitchell or Richard Matvichuk is definitely needed.

McCabe at 5 million a season is a steal considering that piece of trash Gonchar got 5.

Considering Ohlund is getting 3.5, Pronger is at 6.5 and Kaberle is at 4.25, he's also overpaid.

He's not as bad as people make him out to be defensively. His mistakes are just really poorly timed and usualyl a bonehead play which cannot be covered. I didn't want him back and 5.75 (which is the number I'm hearing) is a little much. I'm not completely pissed about anything except the length though.

Mitchell is rumoured to have asked for 4-4.5 from Minny, which is why he was moved. McKee will be the overpriced good, but not great D-man who gets more than he's worth this season in my opinion. Chara's not worth 8 when he chokes in the playoffs and can't contain players off the rush. He's great in the corners and physically, but if a player gets any room, he's toast.

Considering Ohlund is getting 3.5

I think that's a steal for Nonis considering when Salo and Jovo went down, the Nucks turned to Ohlund for many minutes a game, leadership, and some offensive production - even though it didn't help in the long run, he was still there.

Everyones banged up in the playoffs. It's not the first season he's been less than impressive at that time.

Theo- There's roughly a 5% chance the Leafs keep Belfour. They'll tkae the 750K hit and move on. 16.3 for Sundin, McCabe and Kaberle though.

McCabe lead the league in ice time, and would have been right there for the leader among d-man in terms of points had he not missed 9 games with injury. I think he is without question in the top 5 most skilled offensive d-men in the league, and is good but not great defensively. If he was excellent in his own zone as well we'd be talking about him as one of the premier players in the entire league who would command max money.

I can tell you I'd sure as hell rather have McCabe at 5.5 than Chara at 7+. As for the length of this deal, I'll bet you in 3 years McCabe will be considered underpaid as revenues rise and the cap number goes up.

Plus, Berg is gone, and Quinn is gone so hopefully we will never seen Belak on D again, so the Leafs D is going to be better..addition by subtraction :P

This is why English is such a hard language to learn...If I didn't know btter, I'd say Bryan McCabe just quit the team:

Yes, I didn't know WTF he was quitting!! And I only know English!!

Cap or no cap, the GMs will still over pay in the marketplace because the supply is limited each summer of UFAs. Theo, as Larry Brooks would scream, its the 3rd, 4th line guys getting less, but then, shouldn't they? They were just as overpaid for their 6 minutes a night as McCabe or Chara will be for their 20-25 minutes. Man, if only I was bigger, stronger, faster, started playing when I was 2, I could have been somebody! I could have been a contender!! sorry for the "On the Waterfront" reference...........$$$$$$$$$$$$

Maybe it's just my foggy Leafs memory but I thought Belak played pretty well on D in the last stretch of the season. I think it more came down to Quinn's bad coaching and putting Belak out there in clutch situations, which he obviously wasn't ready to handle.

I will admit Belak stepped up his game a bit over the last part of the season, but early on he was horrendous. Plus, I think he is still a long way away from being a top 6 NHL defenceman, and the Leafs probably have 3-4 players on the Marlies who I think are better than Belak on D.

I think he was one of Quinn's projects that simply got icetime cause Quinn liked him. We'll see how much Maurice plays him, but I would suspect not much at all.

Maybe I'm watching a different game but McCabe is the best of the top defenceman available for the Leafs, salary aside. When you look at the fact that the way Chara was exposed against Buffalo, Redden is always on the ice when they get eliminated, Jovonovski is no better than McCabe and Blake is too old.

Also, last time I checked didn't Redden and Jovo usually play the same side as Karbele? That leaves Chara, who is useless when he can't use his size, and Blake, who signing would be the same mistake the Leafs have always made.

The issue now is who else the Leafs are able to sign. If they only end up with a decent guy for the second pairing it will basically be the same time as this past year. At this point, I am really undecided on the signing, McCabe was the right guy of the top $$$ guys but the issue lies in who else they are now able to sign. Perhaps they are better off with Mitchell and Kubina then McCabe and Matvichuk.

Jovo doesn't have McCabe's shot, but he's better at jumping into the rush, more physical, more intimidating and better defensively. Although neither are defensive experts. Chara's shortcomings can be hidden with a good partner who is able to skate very well and doesn't mind staying back. Redden's just a better all round D-man.

Most people take issues with his mental mistakes. Similar to McCabe in that regard. Stupid penalries and tends to get himself into trouble with bad decisions. Like McCabe, they don't happen regularly, but more than alot of other D and tend to really impact the game.

I have read in a few places about Jovo being somewhat overrated...

Is this because of his injury troubles?

I think it is because his nickname is 'Special Ed'.
