7000s to what skate?

Recommended Posts

I am considering getting a pair of custom skates in the near future. I have been wearing Bauer 7000s for the past few years. They fit decent enough, not sure what I am going to go with. What Graf skate would be most comparable to fit and feel to the 7000s? I like a pretty stiff skate. Any other suggestions to include in my options would be appreciated.

you could find 8090's or 8000's on closeout...

I had looked into getting some custom 7000's through an LHS with an 8090 liner and outsole with a +1 stiffness..but tried on some Flexlite 12's and went with them stock...a little more aggressive than the 7000 (which I had been using since 01 or so) and I had to drop the eyelet one notch but love the response..

you may also look into the Supreme 70 as an option..fits deep ala the 8090

Depending on what issues you have with the fit of the 7000 a G3 may work for you.

7000's and 8090's fit nothing alike. 8090's run wider and are for a deeper instep. 8000's are very comparable and a little less stiff than the 7000s (people complained about the stiffness). I would stay with Bauer and get the 8000s or the XX's or XXX's fit fairly close as well. But it's whatever fits your foot when you try them on.

a XX or XXX doesn't come close to a 7000, I can't even get my foot into an XX..an 8090 is still a Supreme..albeit much deeper..however most 7000' users come from an EE 7000 to a D width 8090 and not many are "out-volumed" with regards to the skate..

Depending on what issues you have with the fit of the 7000 a G3 may work for you.

The issues I have with the 7000 are:

1) it wouldn't hurt to have a slightly wider forefoot but keep the same heel.

2) a deeper fitting boot would be nice, when I lace them up there is a bit of space between the edges of the tongue and the side of the boots (you can see a bit of white from the sock between the tongue and edge of the side at about the 4th and 5th eyelets, or right where the skate makes the "bend" from the instep to the ankle)

I keep thinking a 709 would be good because of the wider and deeper fit but if I get a custom I can keep the narrow heel. Plus they are supposedly very stiff. Thoughts?

These are minor complaints, the custom boot is kind of a self-indulgant, one-time thing. These issues don't jump out at me as major annoyances, only when I sit back and critically look at the fit on my boot. I do not doubt that I can find a stock skate that would suffice, as I spend the vast majority of my time coaching. But I would like to find something that fits my foot and style of skating the best.

Here are some things about my past skates:

Graf 704- SO NARROW at the pinky toe and forefoot is was rediculous, ok in the heel

Bauer Vapor 8s- so narrow in the mid-foot on the outside I had to wear sandals to work the next couple days at work. Honestly felt like someone hit me with a bat in the foot. But to be honest, the response from this boot was something I loved, I just couldn't take the discomfort.

7000s-not bad at all, just figure I can improve on them given the resources available to me (namely the knowledgeable people here).

Sorry to ramble a bit, I figure the more info I provide the better an opinion you guys can provide. Thanks in advance.

Well, yes, obviously if you are a EE 7000 then a standard D 8090 might work since it runs wider than normal. But standard D width in a 7000 is closer to a D Vapor and D 8000.

The 7000's are an awesom skate. Stick to the brand your used to. I concurr with a couple of the other guys. Go for a pair of 8090's, they are also an awesome skate.

Some thoughts...

I made the swith from Bauer Supreme line ( I had 4000s which I think fit a lot like the 5000s, 7000s) to Graf 703s a couple years ago. I love the grafs but these are very different skates. Grafs are pitched forward/Bauer are back. The 7000s are way stiffer than 703s. 704 is a stiffer 703. I think the 709 or 705/G% are your better bets in the Graf line. Hope that helps....

I would have to agree with those thoughts. Try on a 709 and a 705/G5 and see what feels better.

Thanks guys, appreciate the info. I really do like the stiff boot, I may not even mind a +1 stiffness in the Bauer line if I went that route with the custom.

I agree. If your a bigger guy 220lbs. + I would say to consider the 709 but the 705/G5 is always a winner.

If the boots are size 10-10.5 you should be able to fit the lightspeeds on but you will need to drill. Also 288 LS wont line up with TUUK + in 296.Im not certain 296 LS will line up with the Custom + Holes either.

probably cheaper to jsut get new steel than to have someone mount a pair of holders on there for you and end up with a pair of holders you'll never use.
