Manny Legace out/ Yzerman?

Recommended Posts

today the wings announced the legace will not be offered a new contract. so the wings will have at least 1 new goalie if not 2. osgood is also a free agent. i think jimmy howard will be on the roster next year. other names flying around here are: jiggi, roloson, and biron.

the second part is yzerman has not made up his mind yet. the press is saying that there will be no answer before the draft on the 24th. most likely is will be sometime in late june to mid july. i think he will be back for one more year.

I notice most of the time you see a player deciding for a long period of time if they should reitre or come back, they almost always come back.

Yzerman can still play, he should come back for another season.

Cool story about Stevey Y: One time my family was up at a resort in Muskoka (I was friggin' working!) and who is staying there but Steve Yzerman and his family. Well, my two sisters aren't real huge hockey fans, but they grew up around my Dad and I so they obviously knew who Steve Yzerman was. They saw him around a couple times, said 'hi' stuff like that, but never bothered him. Anyways, time comes for my family to leave, so my sisters build up the courage (with some prodding from my Dad) to go over to Yzerman's cabin and ask if he would take a quick picture with them, mind you my sisters were probably like 12 and 14 at the time so they were still kids.

Anyways, they knock on the door and Yzerman's wife answers, they ask if Steve can come out for a quick picture, and wouldn't you know it his wife says 'no' and basically closes the door in their face! My sisters turn around, embarassed, and start walking away. Seconds later Steve comes bounding out of the cabin in his flip-flops, apologizing profusely to my sisters and agrees to be in their picture and asks if they would like him to sign anything. Apparently he was a little miffed at his wife for acting like such a bitch.

Morale of the story? Steve Yzerman is an all-around class act, not to mention one of the very finest hockey players who has ever played.

I heard that Manny said that if the Wings don't win the Cup this year, he won't be coming back. In fact, I even heard that he claimed he'd retired, but I don't know how much truth is in that.

IMO, If Yzerman stays, there will only be a few small changes on the wing's roster, if he leaves, there will be major changes.

From what I just read, sounds like they are thinking of keeping Nogood (oops, I mean Osgood) as a backup and are talking about the above mentioned as a replacement starter as well as Nabokov and Luango. Guess they are not sure Howard is ready?

there will be alot of changes going on if he leaves becuase i think the team was built up around him

The team WAS built around him in the mid 80s. The Wings have been looking ahead for the last 5 years. I don't think SY leaving is going to effect anyone else who they want to keep or get rid of. His salary is pretty small (1.25M) in the grand scheme of things.

that's very cool.

a buddy of mine is from detroit and was friends with a red wing, but i can't remember who. also used to play with probert in beer league. but he said stevie seemed like a jerk the one or two times he came across him, and that some of the other players didn't like him much. might have just been cause he didn't party or something like that though - i can't remember. just what i heard though from a FOAF so who knows :]

either way, can't blame him or his wife for wanting alone time i guess, but definitely very cool of him to do that :]

yzerman isnt going to announce his decision until after the cup frenzy and draft hoopla is over so he doesnt steal anyones thunder. i ate my words this year saying detroit would win the cup i know i know. i think yzerman is coming back. i hope osgood is good, i could care less about manny. the big buzz around here is datsyuk is out, zetterberg is the future core of the team. i hope maltby takes his three milion dollar salary and hits the road.

Why the hell would Datsyuk leave? Minus the playoffs, I've always thought he was better than Zetterberg.

I think the reasoning behind this would be that the Wings don't have the cap room to buy a big name goalie outright. Datsyuk would be worth more in a trade. Barring a move on a goalie, I think Datsyuk stays.

Warrior37:

I am with you. I think Maltby only gets about 1.5M, but for that we could get a checking forward that will actually finish a bit more (and drop the gloves instead of just skating away every time). I bet McCarty would be available again

this how i would like to see the wings next year.

Samsonov (4.0) Datsyuk (3.9) Williams (1.2)

Shanahan (2.6) Zetterberg ( 2.65) Yzerman(1.25)

Maltby (1.44) Draper (2.12) Holmstrom (1.36)

Frazen (0.75) Hudler (0.6) Bootland (0.5) 22.37 forwards

Lidstrom(7) Lilja(1)

Kronwall(.84) Schneider(3.3)

Chelios(.85) Lebda(1) 13.99 defence

Louango (6.1) 6.9 goalie

Howard (0.8)

total 43.26

What do you guys think??

Reported Cap is 43.26, is Dats only getting 3.9, I thought he was right around 5? How the hell would the wings get Luongo without giving up Dats/Zetterberg or Williams and Kronwall?

Of those 4, Datsyuk and Williams would be the only 2 they would let go.

after looking at the yahoo sports depth chart here are the players i hope pack their bags: maltby; way too over paid, lang; what has he ever done for the red wings, datsyuk; held out to get paid like joe thornton so why did joe win the ross and most likely the hart, shanahan; i love him but i agree with my father on this, i think hes lost his hunger to compete for cups, i hope osgood and legace are gone, and someone needs to sit down and have a long talk with lilja and kronwall

Detroit could send Datsyuk to Ottawa.. We'll give them Emery.. or even better yet, Hasek to bring a bit of nostalgia to the Wings fans lol

I wish for Yzerman to retire. He's done enough and isn't the impact player he once was. Plus, he's playing on jello knees and it may be wise for him to call it quits so he can walk for a few years before being confined to a wheel chair. I mean, he loves the sport but there comes a time when one should think about his physical health so he can enjoy all his millions. If the Wings are thinking on trading Datsyuk for a goalie.. perhaps they could land Luongo but I highly doubt it. Luongo has said he wants to play for the Panthers but isn't willing to sign a longterm contract... just yet. He wants a one year contract so he can market his talents next year when he becomes a UFA. I don't think he's going anywhere just yet but who knows.. with Mad Iron Mike Keenan in Florida, anything could happen, although maybe not as much as if it was Mike Milburry lol

Lang is a possibility to go, although the wings don't have a big Center without him. I think he just had a bad year. If he can put up 30-40 goals next year, they can justify his salary. Shanahan will stay for sure. He loves it here and the Wings want him, which is nice because he will be the least expensive 40 goal UFA on the market. Lilija is a bargan and Kronwall is the future of the RW defense, so I think they are not going anywhere.

oh dont get me wrong i want Lilja and Kronwall to stay they just need to play better in the offs. i agree Shanny is a great player, but it all depends on how bad he wants another cup, and if the wings dump Lang and Maltby they could get more of a 'power forward' center. they need to find a hard working, hard nose player who has yet to win a cup and will do almost anything to win

The Wings spread out their talent a lot last year and rolled four lines a lot. That lowered the numbers for a lot of guys and I think it came back to bite them in the ass come playoff time.

Get rid of Lang, he couldn't equal his great two thirds of a season with actual players and isn't a Detroit quality second line center. Other than that, everyone is a Detroit built player who wouldn't be as good on another team, sort of like the Patriots except the winning.

I doubt Luongo gets traded, Florida is on the cusp of making the playoffs and they can find a goal scorer another way. As for Nabokov, it could happen but again, who do they want from Detroit? Maybe Schneider and someone? Regardless, Detroit nor Ottawa will win the Cup next year unless something drastic happens.

While some of your points have merit, I refuse to listen to you speak on any Detroit matters with that ridiculous avatar. :P

the sens can throw the bus at hasek.

as for luongo he also wants a no trade clause.

the playoffs are not even over yet so ALOT of wheeling and dealing has yet to occur. this could be a very intresting summer. for the right price anything is possible.
