Radius/pitch/profile confusion

Recommended Posts

Okay, so after a couple of long months off skating with my ice skates with the rink in my town and closest to my town being shut, I went for a public skate after it reopened. Everytime I felt the need to accelerate, I'm leaning forward a bit too much and losing my balance. I'm using Flexlites here and I usually use CCM Vector Pro's before it broke down. The E-Blade retail radius was 11' so I'm going for that but is there anything I should change with the pitch of the skate? I know Flexlites have a backward pitch but I dunno what pitch I should change.

Any help please?

Well, in actuality, I know more than the LHS staff do haha. Last time I went, I asked if the Nike Flexlites skates fit as the same as the Bauer Vapors did. They said:

"They both fit exactly the same, it's made by the same company"

So that's asking my LHS staff out of the picture. Any more help?

Top- I always thought pitch and radius were different things

My LHS wouldn't even know Bauer was owned by Nike and then they'd go on about how CCM 652 is the best range of hockey gear and that everything else is rubbish overpriced or faulty

EDIT: Theres a UK guy on here called "SkateDoctor" i think and if you sent your skates to him he can profile them for you

First off, E-Blades have a 10' radius.

Panther, pitch and radius are different. Pitch is the amount of forward or backwards lean cut into the steel or caused by the holder. Radius is the amount of curve in the steel, such as that the curved parts would form a perfect circle if it was continued all the way around.

I switched to flexlite tens from missino amp flyweights. Before you do anyhting to your steel, I recoomend that you just focus on skating in more of a sitting position. In the case of flexlites, you might want to try doing so with your shoulders, knees, and toes in sync with an imaginary line drawn perpendicularly from the ice. That is what worked for me.

Are they Flexlite 12's with Lightspeed holders?

And the E-holder is never the same each skate can be diffrent just like every other skate. Some are 9 foot radius and some are 10 some are in between. For the most part latley I have noticed in checking all the skates they all seem to be closer to a 9 foot. I will have an answer from all the companies tech guys for everyone next Thursday after the meeting with them!

i believe flexlites have a 9 foot radius. in fact i believe CCM is the only company that uses an 11 foot radius.

i would not mess with pitch too much at first. sounds like the problem is when you get up on your toes. that is probably due to the smaller radius.

i know that an 11 can be radiused to a 9 foot by removing material.

unfortunately, i'm not sure that a 9 foot blade can be re-radiused to an 11 because there isn't enough material on the blade. ask JR about this.

You can put any radius you want on any skate. CCM does not have an 11 it is between 9 and 10 I checked them last week.

Anyway the diffrence would be if you had Lightspeed or Tuuk on there and thats where we need to start from.

ccm holders generally come with a neutral pitch right? prolite3's are neutral am i correct?

As of late in 04 and begging 05 the CCM runners went Neg. But the E-holders in some cases have a thicker heel which off sets this. However the Prolite holder doesnt. It all depends on what holder you have and when the steel was manufactured.

You can measure 100 prs of just about any brand steel and will come up a variety of radius's. No consistency at all.

God, trust the UK to have "professionals" to run the LHS...

Mmmmm Is that a dig at the UK ?

:D

Only for how they treat hockey. No knowledge, no passion, nothing! Hahaha

Mission is the only company with an 11' radius cut in their steel.

Mission PITCH is only 11' from sizes 288 to 296. The 280 and 272s are 10' and 254 and 263 is 9'

Thanks JR I did forget to mention I was going off an average size 8 skate! I measrued a pair last week and they were only a 9 foot

How exactly do you physically measure the radius?

how does a difference in radius effect how you skate? and 263 steel means its length right? i've never messed with the steel on my skates and i'm wondering if it makes a big difference.
