An arbitrator has awarded New Jersey Devils forward Scott Gomez $5 million US for the 2006-07 season.

The Devils have 48 hours to decide whether to retain Gomez and his salary for next season or walk away from the deal, thus making him an unrestricted free agent.

Gomez, 26, enjoyed his best career season in 2005-06, scoring 33 goals and 84 points in 82 regular season games.

Actually, I know I'm still in cap trouble without Gionta, Hale, and Martin signed yet. I know I need to sign a back-up goalie but that will be easy. Brodeur will play all 82 games and the equipment manager will dress as the back-up goalie, just like in the UHL! I know the bench may be short a few nights so I will have open try-outs for guys like me, old and slow, to play a game or two, more like a shift or two, serve penalties and drinks at all home games in the swamp. On the road, I will recruit from MSH. This should be easy as I know all of us are NHL caliber and NHL wanna-bes. So, you will be! Kosydar, you will play in Pittsburgh. Your job will be to run Crosby, if you can catch him. What happens afterwards is your problem. I'm not sure if Orpik is a righty or lefty. You might want to find out before the first period. Theo, you will play all games in MSG vs NYR. I know this will be extremely difficult to wear the Red & Black but Vapor will be on your line. The two of you can try to score on Brodeur even though he is your goalie. Theo, also pass to Jagr. This will be easier than having him steal the puck from you. Chadd, you will play in the United Center in front of the 3 remaining Hawks fans who actually go to the games. Do not flip them the puck over the glass as this is still an automatic penalty and the Devils have only Jay Pandalfo to kill penalties for all 82 games. Fletch, you will play in LA and only when Avery is on the ice. You will not be allowed to hug him although we know you want to. Besides, he will say nasty things about your mother and girlfriend. Don't pay attention to him, no one else does. Kovy, you will play in Montreal in the Bell Center. Make sure your skates are sharp. I believe the game will be in the middle of a blizzard in January but thats Montreal, right? Sher-wood21, see you in Edmonton. do not get in Ryan Smyth's way. He will not go around you, he will go through you. Wicked wrister, playing at the Joe will be like the last time. same locker room, just no players lounge before the game. A jump from 19 goals to 33 is a little out of whack if you ask me, new rules or not. IMO, I think Gomez is maybe worth $3-4M. $5M for Gomez is something I expect outta the Leafs, not the Devils...

The idea is to ask for a higher number so when you receive less, it is actually still acceptable to you. I guess you have never asked your boss for a raise. Try asking for exactly what you think you are worth. He still won't give it to you. Ask for more than you think you are worth and if you are lucky, he will give you enough to still make you satisfied. Welcome to the world of business.

I'm sorry but you are not old enough to play in the NHL. The minimum age is 18. I used to be the GM of Terminal Hockey on Thursday nights at Low Tor a long time ago. Getting guys to pay you so they can play is a lot tougher than going to arbitration!

He was a top player, but let's not confuse the Mogilny of now with the Mogilny of old. When he was with the Devils last year, he looked slow (maybe because of his hips) and disinterested. He was sent down to Albany to open up cap space, but also because after Lamoriello took over as head coach, he interviewed each player to find out what was going on and he didn't particularly like what Mogilny had to say.

New article today says that Lamorielllo convinced Malakhov to report to training camp which seems a curious move. Not 100% sure, but the conspiracy theory is that if Malakhov reports to camp and fails his physical, then he won't count against the cap but would get paid [which is the opposite scenario if he had stayed away where he wouldn't get paid but would count against the cap].

A couple places reported different figures for what Gomez requested in arbitration. Sports Illustrated said 5.85 million, a more credible NJ paper said 6.5, whereas the 7 million figure was just conjecture from a NY Post writer.
