how to stop activeX popup?

Recommended Posts

This has been getting on my nerves, only having IE7 for a few weeks I still don't know all the features but the activeX popups are annoying the crap out of me. How do I go about removing them?

P.S. And no, I won't use firefox because I don't like using it for browsing.

Active X allows the website to run code on your computer. This code can be what you want or harmfull to your computer. My automatically allowing activex you run the harm of getting viruses and allowing bad websites to access your computer.

It is essential that you are alerted that activex wants to be activated on a website. The best thing to do is to disable activex. The bad thing about this is that some websites will not work correctly.

Go to Tools > Internet Options > Security > Custom Level -> from here you can disable activex or disable the alert (dont do it).

Can I ask why you don't want to use Firefox. Firefox does not allow the execution of activex.

Well it only gives you one option and that's "ok"

I don't want to lower my security level just remove this useless popup.

I've had that happen to me on quite a few websites I visit. I've been wondering where it was cause it used to never happen. I usually hit the 'x' instead of 'ok'. -shrug-

It comes up on mostly sites with non-flash music/video players. I've seen it come up on many sites including myspace and forums where videos/music players are being used.

In firefox the popup or anything similar doesn't appear, so i'm assuming it has something to do with IE7.

Those are the type of websites that you WANT to know if they are running activex code on your computer. Here is a news article detailing that an ad on My Space that installed spyware on your computer. You were only at risk if you were running a broswer that allowed activex (Internet Explorer). If you used Firefox you were not at risk.

Use buggy software and you get problems. There used to be an option to turn off active X in IE, worst case I'm sure you can find a reg hack to turn it off. Try the microsoft knowledge base and I'm sure you'll find an answer.

Since switching to Mozilla a couple years ago I haven't had a single problem.
