MLB Trading Deadline

Recommended Posts

Trading deadline ends tomorrow, and so far, two blockbuster deals. Carlos Lee to the Rangers, and now, Corey Lidle and Bobby Abreu to the Yankees, in exchange for four minor-league players.

Why are Philadelphia teams so (expletive) stupid? Four minor league players for a pitcher and a right-fielder who bats a liftetime .301? They should have at least been able to get someone off the starting roster. Once again, the Phillies have disappointed the city of Philadelphia.

Now, I'm officially ashamed to be a Philadelphia sports fan. Although we do have a history of trading away good players for virtually nothing. Supposedly it makes our teams better, when we haven't won a championship since 1980.

Wow...and the Yanks didn't lose Proctor. Abreu should have fun aiming for the short porch in right. This morning supposedly Lieber was going to be in the deal. Good trade for the Yanks...Sheff and Bernie will be done soon.

Lidle- just another example of Brian Cashman's stupidity.

What does he think if an average pitcher suddenly goes to the Yanks they'll pitch amazing? Still better then Sidney (DUI) Ponson

Um, he picked up BOBBY ABREU in the deal.

Lidle's a decent pitcher, he'll be the 4/5, who cares though. He got Abreu for an underachieving former first round pick, a 27 year old minor leaguer, a defensive catcher with no bat, and a pitcher who's in his third year of pro ball and still can't get out of rookie league.

Cashman totally fleeced the Phillies, he even got them to pay the 1.5mil for Abreu to waive his NTC.

This is a horrible deal for the Phils. Considering CJ Henry can't hit in low A ball at 20 years old and SS may not be his final position, I'm not too thrilled at all. Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if Gillick said he wasn't going to give him away and that he would get value in return.

Lidle is very underrated and a lot of teams knew it. I think it sucks that he was included instead of Lieber. Considering he's not making that much, it's his last year in his contract, and he was a sinker ball pitcher in a homerun park, the Phils could've gotten more in a trade for just Lidle.

I'm not a fan of Proctor and can't understand why he was on the Yankees untouchable list being as he's pushing 30.

Proctor's not untouchable, he was almost traded straight up for Betemit but Atlanta couldn't turn Aybar(who's honestly a better player than Betemit) and Baez for him.

They don't have a ton coming out of the pen before they get to the 9th

eh, villone has pitched well, farnsworth is pitching his best in a while, and dotel's about to come back. proctor's good when not overused (which is rare with torre).

having the best closer ever helps also, if a starter goes six you really only have to worry about two innings

Nixon's hurt and Foulke hurt his back rehabbing today, there goes any leverage Epstein had in making a deal.

The Phillies got $23M salary relief... it's kind of hard to get a lot of value in return. This trade is another reason to hate Ed Wade.

Just imagine this lineup come September:

1. damon - cf

2. jeter - ss

3. abreu - rf

4. arod - 3b

5. giambi - 1b

6. shef - dh

7. matsui - lf

8. posada - c

9. cano - 2b

Too bad the pitching is weak, at best.

The pitching's actually pretty good, especially with Lidle now, and Sheff probably won't be back.

Lineup will probably be something along the lines of....

Damon

Jeter

Giambi

ARod

Abreu

Posada

Matsui

Cano

Melky

People still think they're capable of winning? Awww, that's cutetastic.

They were already the best team in the division over the last month, best team in the league over the last two weeks, and then they get the OBP machine and a new #4 starter not named Jaret Wright.

You're right, they suck. They'll win the division by 4.5+

I still think Minnesota has been the hottest team in baseball as of late, not the Yankees. They came from out of nowhere to being 1.5 games back in the wild card. Should be an interesting race at the end of the year. Unfortunately I think the Jays played them self out of contention this week which blows and I just dont understand them. Take 3 of 4 from the Yanks, a series they should have swept but then they lose games to teams they should beat. Thats always going to be the difference between the Yanks/Sox and Jays to me, the Jays don't consistently beat the teams they should beat. Hopefully they can work on their picthing this upcoming offseason and add a solid fifth starter and two quality relievers and they should be set for next year. As for this year I think the final standings will look like this:

Al East: Yankees

Al Central: Detroit

Al West: Oakland (Its a shame they still get a playoff birth with so many better teams in the AL)

Wilcard: Minnesota (Two of the best pitchers in the game and some hot bats, I dont see them slowing down)

The way the Phillies trade you'd think they were a small market team though.

Because they're dumping salary? Gillick is redistributing the salary to starting pitching, which is where it should be in the first place. Attendance is down, the team had an inflated payroll for how many games they were winning, and the current players and contracts really kept Gillick hamstrung from what he wanted to do to the team. I know they didn't get nearly equal value for Abreu at all, but at least I can hope that the team can be rebuilt the way it should be.

In the next few years, Myers, Howard, and Utley will all have to be paid much more money and I'd rather have them stay than Abreu.

Cupcake, no one said they suck but they're not the same kind of Yankees that knew how to win like their past teams. They're going to make the playoffs, whether it be by eeking in or winning the division, but they won't get anything out of it.

It wasn't long ago that they actually considered themselves a small market team.
