Wings goaltending solution...sort of

Recommended Posts

Not disappointed with the signing, but not thrilled either. I really thought we were going to end up with an Anaheim, San Jose, or Buffalo goaltender. Hopefully, the reason they signed Dom for cheap to save cap room for a top 6 winger. As much as I hope Dom stays healthy, I have a bad feeling we will be seeing a lot of Ozzie and Jimmy this season.

Redwings issues arent with goaltending its with their overaged slow defense who cant keep up with the new style NHL. You need guys who can move at defense. The wings have older slower guys or guys who are too big and cant move. I think Manny got a bad rap and it wasnt his fault, look at who was in front of him. It was amazing the speed difference betweens edmontons forwards and the Detroit Defense.

Sometimes it is just really hard to be a fan of an Original Six team!

Try being a Hawks fan. It's like being a cubs fan with a bad owner.

I miss the days when the hawks were among the best teams in the NHL. The NHL is at it's best when a playoff series is played between two teams that hate each other. The best sporting event I ever went to was a hawks-wings playoff game in 95. What happened to them, are they under the same ownership as they were in the early to mid 90's?

And to save money for all the medical bills he will generate.

The more I look into the deal the more I think its a pretty smart move by the Wings. There wasnt much available in the free agent market and it came down to Legace who hasnt been a proven playoff performer, Belfour whose injury problems are worse then Haseks, and Hasek whom they decided upon. With Osgood and Hasek they have two guys who can split the regular season 50-50 and you have Hasek for the playoffs, a guy whos proven he can be the guy in the big game. Its a big risk-reward scenario where if he gets hrut you look like idiots for signing him but if not he could have one of those playoffs where he carries the team. For the price I see it working out. There was no one else in the market whom they could get for that price and provide the rewards Hasek will. Whats wrong with taking a chance for one year on him? You cant expect a cup every year and if things dont work out it didnt hurt your wallets too much and gives Howard another year of development. I dont follow the Wings that closely so I dont really know what their forward and d situation is but they always seem to be at the top of the West (could be the fact they always win their weak division and are guaranteed a top 3 seed) and that means that if Hasek gets hot in the playoffs he could carry them. I see it being a win-win situation because they got a playoff goaltender for very cheap and with any other goalie available they would have had to pay more and might not get as big a return.

screw all that... he had a great career. hang em up. im so frustrated with the wings. time for a new GM. I was so pissed about Hasek, i told my ticket contact that i dont think i want any of the "free" tickets that i get every year. usually 8-10 games. i dont even want to support that washed up has been.

and would have been equally pissed about belfour. he's suck a head case that he would have cracked in the D. one bad game and the fans would be all over him, and he's so nutty, he would have flipped and probably quit.

Hey we get one of the best goalies in the league last year who has been healing since the olympic break, so he will be 100%. We only paid him 750, so he's a bargain we didnt lose anyone from our roster, and next year he is UFA again and then the Wings will sign someone good or trade for someone good or Jimmy Howard will be ready to step in. I mean worse case scenario he wont be any worse than Legace, not that Legace was bad at all but Hasek is still a very good goalie, so we wont be any worse than Legace except Hasek has the playoff experience.

He play behind one of the best regular season teams in a while, but they did fall apart once Hasek was gone. I'd definatley take him at 750k.

I had doubts, but for the money this is great. I keep hearing about how Detroit has all these great goalie prospects (Liv, Howard,...) but they can't become NHL goalies without playing in the NHL! I wanted an Osgood + "rookie" pairing for the season so we could get one of them going. But this, I'm OK with. If he's 100% like he says, then Detroit is getting a bargain! The impact on the cap is minimal. Dom took on a lot of the risk.

On a side note, when Dom left Detroit in '04 (i.e. the big mess), one thing that is overlooked. He gave almost half of the loot on his $6 million contract back to the team. That shows something. I'm glad he's back even if it might only be for a year.

The team threatened to withhold the money.

Exactly. Also, him coming back in and of itself is kind of a bitch move. They already had a solid #1 in Cujo, and arguably the best backup in the league in Legace. That whole deal was really shitty for the entire Wings team.
