Retired Player...Retired Pattern?

Recommended Posts

So what happens when a player retires? Do stick manufacturers throw away that pattern never to be seen again?

If so I should stock up on TPS Mark Messier and Warrior Robitaille sticks. :P

If it is a pattern that sells well, they keep it and pass it on to the next endorsee. The other case is when the name of the pattern is extremely popular - eg. Coffey and they just keep the name.

Name change example

Modano > Forsberg

Or you can find it listed as "M9" with some campanies

So does that mean Forsberg is using Modano's pattern?

BTW - When a player signs an endorsement deal, does he get to design his own pattern?

I think Dante2004 was talking about retail versions

so I would have to say no, Forsberg does not use Modanos pattern, they might have similar pro stock curves but this would be purely by coincidence

I dont think so. Obviously I dont know for certain but I just know that pro stock sticks and retails patterns are usually completely different. They usuall just use an endorsee's name on a current pattern.

E.g. when they changed the modano to Forsberg. neither player probably used it.

Just goes to show you that you learn something new everyday. :D

I'd like to know why the name change from Modano To Forsberg. Is Modano's name not good enough to sell sticks?

Modano's contract with easton was up lastyear and he chose not to resign with them. His name is now on the RBK sticks, and having forsberg as an endorsee already it was a simple switch.

Modano was endorsed by Rbk thats why you see his name on Rbk sticks now. Where Forsberg is endorsed by Easton, so they needed to rename the old Modano curve, so they named it Forsberg.

Not only do the players use a pattern that is different from the one you find in the store (retail version), some players don't even use the BRAND that endoreses them. They will go so far as to repaint their sticks with the company's logo that endorses them. For example I player may like Mission sticks, but Easton endorses him...so he gets his sticks from Mission and then they get an Easton Synergy paint job...or whatever. Easton could care less what he is ACTUALLY using, as long as the Easton logo shows up on TV in his hands.

Wrong.

That is NOT done.

A company will not paint over another's composite stick. The only case that I have heard of this ever done was done to a wood stick (painted the wood to look like an OPS) and the stick that was painted was one that was defunct.

Figure it out.

Players still paint their sticks.

Disregarding the reason to look cool and hide their stick brand from other players.

They might do it to not ruin their endorsement deal?

Thinking "At least Forsberg isn't seen in a game with a competitors stick. Just a covered up one."

Also, why did Datsyuk black out his stick in the 02/03 playoffs (maybe 03/04...can't remember)?

Wasn't Datsyuk using Nikes back then? The only players I can think of who have painted their sticks were Hull (when he was under contract with Mission and put a Mission logo on a blacked out stick or something like that, but I think it was confirmed that he did that by himself) and Sundin who completely blacked out his mystery stick.

The post said that company A would take company B's stick and splash their graphics on it. That is what I was disagreeing with. Players who are under contract with company A have spraypainted to COVER UP the logo of company B. That's the difference.

Hull wrote "Mission" on his Z-Bubble Grip.

Oh...yea that's right.

Another company would never do that.

Players would have to find a third party to paint over it or do it themselves.
