Recommended Posts

I can barely watch this video (the first one)... the chick's english is so poor you sit there having to think what the hell she's saying, like "the tragedy of the puck" when she means trajectory.... ugh

that is a DUMB ass "invention" which they totally copied that other DUMB ass "invention" from FOX. i could feel my IQ going down while watching that video...

I think the idea of the rink being a big display is cool, and when you score goals, you get the sweeping effect. That is definitely not a copy. Although I think other technologies such as those used by the Hurricanes could offer up a moving display on the ice, and it would be full color.

One useful idea that no one has implemented yet is something inside the puck, the ice and the goal posts to determine whether or not the puck has actually crossed the line. You could put all those guys who flip the lights out of a job quite easliy, imho.

i'm pretty sure that it's a speech generation program.

I used to work at a speech recognition company, who put out TTS (text to speech). I have heard them all and I can tell you 100% that that is not TTS.

The "Foxpuck" and Fox Hockey Robots" why didn't that work again???? ;)

[EDIT] Did you watch the Fox NHL Commercial? The Voiceover sounds very, very amateur and they spelled Canadiens - CANADIANS at the end.

I hope that didn't actually air.

ugh, if it didn't work with the fox puck then WHY would this work? Sure the display and effect things and all are pretty cool, but do they really expect to put sensors under every NHL ice sheet and put them in every puck? Just accept that if you want to watch hockey you have to use your head a little to find the puck.

It seems to me that this was developed by someone who had trouble watching hockey, and not playing it.

Any true player could see from the beginning that this wouldnt work.

I didn't have sound, but from what I saw of the video, I'm not sure how this would work when the puck's off the ice. There's a bunch of squares with sensors under the ice and a transmitter in the puck, right? Unless it actually is being tracked like the Foxtrack puck and the computer controls which square lights up...

Oh, that reminds me: You could probably do Foxtrack for much less than $200 a puck now.

I wouldn't think it would work for the plain reason that NO nhl player in his right mind would want the ice to light up under his puck..

It would give goalies an advantage and also just hinder the sport from a players point of view.

Fun idea... but very stupid idea.

One thing that could branch off of this technology would be sensors in the goal posts and puck that would turn on the red light when a puck passed through the frame of the goal. A lot less disputing over goal/no goal and watching low quality replays trying to decide if it was in or not.

The arenas already have projectors that can display team logos on the ice, large screen displays overhead, etc...

That's just plain stupid IMO. Like it has been stated already, lamps and ice won't work because of the heat generated by all these lamps. And how are you suppose to change the lamps if they die down? Drill a hole in the ice?

As for advertising on ice and scores. They don't need that. They can already do it with lasers/ceiling lights. They already have the logos displayed on the ice before the lights turn on in the pro arenas so it should be quite easy to have company logos done for advertising too. As for the score.. I think that's what a scoreboard is for lol.. that and replays but I guess to go use the ice surface too with the lasers/ceiling lamps they already use..

I think it's dumb, if you watch the players actions and movements on the ice, you can tell who has the puck.

if you understand the game it is easy to follow everything that way, but the fan who is going to their first game is not going to be able to follow the game like that. If the nhl is ever going to be a major sports in the US then need to figure out a way to make the game easier for someone new to follow

Exactly. I think it's an interesting concept but it seems pretty complex and hard to fix if something goes wrong. The on-ice effects and displays alone make it worth considering for major arenas.

They can't use the lasers during game play and in any case the brighter TV lights would make it almost impossible to see the laser images. With this system you could change the ads on the ice at any time, like the LED ads on the boards in some rinks.

I think that ads changing while playing on the ice would be as bad as the yellow line behind the puck.

another thing i hadted about the foxpuck was when it was against the boards closest to the TV camera. that made it look like the puck was floating in the 3rd or 4th row.

anyone remember the robotic players that would destroy eachother after a goal? like the steem roller and such? haha oh fox...

I can't imagine they would change the ads during play, that would be too distracting. During stoppages or between periods is much more likely.
