Vapor XXX Skates Stink

Recommended Posts

I'm not trying to beat a dead horse here, but I seem to be having a new problem with stink in my skates.

I've had my XXX's now for about 2 months. I play once a week and ref 2 games/night at least once a week. I wear moisture wicking socks. After every skate I take the liners out and let the skates air dry. I didn't have this problem with either of my previous pairs of Vapors (THG and XIX). I treat these new skates the same way as my older skates and they never stunk this badly.

I'm wondering if the "hydrophobic" liner is to blame.

I've read other threads here about how to get rid of the smell, but I'm trying to prevent it!

I understand that stink is something we as hockey players must deal with, but to me this seems a little extreme.

I'm wondering if anyone else noticed this when moving "up" to XXX's from a lower level Vapor skate.

Todd

if youve ever had a girl in the car on the ride home they will complian your ear off

if your actually that worried about it just stick a air freshner in your skate when you air it out

Knock on wood, I'm a barefoot advocate and nothing of mine has reached obscene levels. Is it a general sweaty/stinky smell or is it like something (mold/fungus) growing in there? Ozone could kill that I think.

I've always thought the 20 was a superior skate for that exact reason........the liner on the 30 smells like gasoline after about a month, and my foot slid around in it.

You know, I've gotten blisters in these skates too, and I didn't in either of the THG's or XIX's. Must be because my feet are sliding?

Perhaps I didn't make the wisest choice with these skates. Maybe I'll have to order some XX's from Hockeymonkey and unload these XXX's.

Ive got the same problem. I know my XXX are not too big or two wide , but on my right heel it kills every time I skate and there is a huge blister there now.

These skates are 1/2 size smaller, same width. My toes occasionally brush the toe cap. I honestly feel these are the best fitting skates I've had. What's wierd is that I didn't get a blister for the 1st 6 weeks I had them. Only in the past 2 weeks has this issue really occurred. Strange indeed.

Maybe I need to just make sure I tie them tightly so my foot doesn't move around or just wait until the blister heals and a good calous gets built up.

Were are the blisters on your foot?

I'm a 7D in both XXX and XX. I find the consensus is divided on whether they fit the same, or if its necessary to drop a half size in the XXX.

Were are the blisters on your foot?

On my lower inside heels. The one on my right foot, which didn't show up for the 1st 6 weeks I had the skates, is much worse than the one on my left. The left one is pretty much gone now.

I tried tying my skates more tightly the past couple of nights (ref'd 2 games each night) and the blister on the right is going away now too. I covered the blister with bandaids while skating, other than that I've been in sandals for 2 weeks. I've got a game Sunday night and then I don't skate again for at least a week. It should give my feet plenty of time to heal.

As for the stench in my skates, I guess I'll have to deal with it after the fact as it seems there's no way to prevent it.

One question though - what about drilling holes in the bottom of the outsole, ala pro skates? Would this help the skates "breath" and allow them to dry more efficiently? Would putting holes in the outsole be detrimental to the integrity of the skates themselves? I've heard that it could possibly cause the outsole to flex more than it's designed to. Any thoughts?
