Ovechkin Turns Down "C"

Recommended Posts

I think its a good move. On the caps report a couple of weeks back they asked ben clymer what they thought about the rumours of ovey wearing the C, and he basically said, he is a leader because of his work on the ice, and personality off it, but he is still a kid. Just let him be himself without adding pressure to him. He will be captain material, but just let ovey be ovey for a while until he understands the language better. Everyone in the locker room respects and looks up to him, he does not need a C to be a leader and I tend to agree with that opinion

hope the Pens read that

The gap between those two widens yet again.

That was the first thing I thought too. I just get the sense that Crosby is drooling for the "C", meanwhile Ovechkin would rather be ready before he gets it.

Everything Ovechkin has done since he has come into the league has been right. On the Crosby thing, please note that Ovechkin says he IS ready to be a captain with the exception of his English, a problem Sid doesn't have.

He was quick to add that he's more than ready to be a leader, but feels a captain has to be able to communicate his feelings with teammates.

I love this because it makes Ovechkin look good, and Crosby will come out looking not nearly as good. If he does take the C in Pitts, why couldn't he be more respectful like Ovechkin was and turn it down? If he does turn it down it isn't a big deal because Ovechkin already did.

I wasn't hating on Crosby. In fact, I have nothing against him whatsoever. Also, you have to look at the teams these guys are on. Who should be captain for the capitals? Witt? No, he got traded to nashville before the season ended. Kolzig? Nope, goalie. Ovechkin is already almost the defacto captain due to no other options. With the pens you have LeClair, Recchi, hell even Gonchar.

Clark, Sutherby or Clymer get my vote, although Zubrus may get it.

At the training camp sessions I went to last season, Sutherby was helping prospects with some of the drills, as well has having a good relationship with the vets there. He is respected in the locker room, and he sticks up for teammates on the ice.

I have said for about 2 years now that I see sutherby wearing the C, and this would be a great year for him to get it I think.

In saying that, Clymer and Clark have added a great level of leadership to the team too, and Zubrus, by virtue of his tenure and translation skills with ovey may be awarded it.

On a side note, they were saying on caps report a few weeks back that Brent Johnson was a huge influence and character guy in the locker room. I had heard otherwise about him before he came over, but they were saying he has much respect, and a great relationship with olie too.

Also, Olie is on caps report right now, has guaranteed a spot inthe finals (not this year, just guaranteeing it), and also confirming...finally that bondra will not be back in washington, that should put an end to those neverending rumours

I think Zednik may be considered too...he started his career in Wash..moved on, and now is coming back as a veteran..He'll definately have an "A"...myabe even the "C".

Isn't the potential communication problems the same reason Jagr turned down the "C" in NY?

I don't think Zednick will be considered, because I think he will be gone at the trade deadline.

With Jagr it was not wanting to be the first captain after Messier. If he goes into a slump he can take the team around him down with his attitude and lack of work ethic, thats not captain material.

I thought I read (or heard) somewhere that Crosby had 'tantrums' lthroughout the season last year. In my thoughts, I'd think a captain would need maturity and ability to control their temper and emotions to help control the teams mood. Also, the captain should be encouraging to try an raise the team up in tough situations.

I didn't get the feel that Crosby did that last year, but then again, I wasn't on the ice. Just my opinion here...go easy. ;)

PS: this is not to bash Crosby, just trying to raise some points, and maybe have someone contradict what I believe I heard. I welcome someone who knows better than I to tell me my info is incorrect.

Raising points that are valid which aren't flattering to Sid is considered bashing to a lot of his fan club.

Its too bad this board wasn't around in 1979/80 and everyone could bash on Wayne Gretzky for being a spoiled brat getting his way all the time in Edmonton. Oh my, did I just compare Gretzky to Crosby? No, I just compared the bashing that goes on now to what would have, could have gone on then. Everyone says that they both brought the same amount of hype at the beginning. That is the comparison I am making before everyone runs away with the idea that I am comparing 99 to 87. I still love the way we all act like we know Crosby and AO personally and sit in the same locker room and on the same bench. They could each be two of the greatest guys in the world or two of the biggest jerks in the world. We'll never know.

Its also a no-brainer for a guy who cannot speak in complete sentences to a referee to not be your captain.

May I add that the "C" doesn't need to go to the best player on the team, it goes to a person that is vocal in the locker room and on the bench... a LEADER. Sometimes it's less about what you do on the ice and more about what you do in the locker room.

I also wouldn't want my captain to be the guy who can speak english and flips on the ref when he's getting part of his 110 PIM  just joking around

Those words on Jagr's work ethic couldn't be further from the truth VIA NY at least.

On this front, once again Ovechkin shows his maturity

Let me clarify, I was referring specifically to when Jagr played with the caps.

He went into a slump, which then became a nagging groin injury, which then became something else, then he complained about the coach (although to be fair, most caps fans hated butch cassidy from day one, when he showed up to training camp with notes scribbled on a napkin, no gameplan or anything, or when they played the pens in pittsburgh, he went through a new powerplay setup during the public part of their morning skate, which some pens were watching)

In DC he clearly didn't want to play here, but signed a huge extension. When he was on the ice, he didn't try, as evidenced by his taking his sweet ass time to get back to the bench in the playoffs against tampa, game six, which caused jason doig to jump over the bench early, caps get called on a too many men, already on a PK, go down 5 on 3, and lose the game, and the series.

He was great in his first full year as a rag, but he is a huffy primadona who is getting past his best, and I fully expect him to impode and divide the team in the next season, or within 2 at the absolute outset.

Caps fans are very very bitter about jagr, so I am clearly biased, just wanted to put that on the table so you know where I am coming from

Theo??

Tom Renney is coach Jagr has to respect. That is the beginning of the difference between Jagr's Caps days and Rangers days. I'll let Theo finsh the rest.

BTW, I do understand why you are pissed at Jagr but thats history now.
