Do you guys know why he prefers to stay in school?

Some rumours that he isn't overly fond of Carolina

Its sad when the current Cup champs can't even get their own prospects to want to play for them.

And who does Toronto trade for him? A Stajan/Welly/Steen + Cola/Harrison/White + pick? I'm not too fond of giving up any of our young forwards, and I can't see them biting for a strictly D package.

maybe so he can fall back on something if he gets injured int he show?

I think his rookie max salary would be enough to attend the final few years of school if need be.

It's not always about the $$. Maybe he knows he'll eventually end up in the NHL. Perhaps he wants to try winning an NCAA championship first? Maybe his parents have convinced him an education is key.

There are alot of different reasons to stay/not stay in school. Without knowing him personally all we can do is speculate.

Too bad though, Carolina is short now without Kaberle. I don't doubt that Carolina will make the playoffs, but getting back to the Finals will be a challenge. Who knows though. If they keep enough cap room they might be able to rent a couple marquis players again come playoff time. Also remember, Carolina played the latter half of the season without Erik Cole, and Whitney was constantly in/out of the lineup. With those 2 healthy for a long stretch I think Carolina will be ok.

I'd do a Johnson and a pick for Zherdev

Johnson and a pick for Zherdev? That seems a little much. Maybe Zherdev a pick and someonething else for Johnson.

Zherdev has proved he belongs in the NHL...JJ hasn't proved anything yet...

I don't understand what is stopping him from getting his education while playing in the NHL. Either getting it after his career, or during the summer/seasons.

an NCAA champ. is not worth risking a injury that could end your carear before it starts and a 3yr 850,000 a yr + bonouses would sure be nice. If it don't work out take the money and run school well always be there

Why is it that everyone thought that Towes staying for another year was a good idea, but its not with JJ? Is it because Chicago is that much crappier than Carolina? If anything I would think that there would be a lot more pressure to perform well on a winning team like Carolina, which might lead JJ to think he isn't ready to make the jump quite yet.

Johnson is more physically mature and older.

Hockey for FUN, instead of a your "job"? Granted, D1 hockey is extremely competetive, but it's still not technically a job, since the payers aren't paid a salary for their performance.

Perhaps he thinks Red Berenson is a better coach than Peter Laviolette.

Yes, a career ending injury is always a possibility, but that's a chance no matter what level you're playing after squirt (once checking begins.)

I have no idea what I would do in his position, and a pretty enviable position it is.

Imagine having an NHL club say they want you to play and having the cojones to tell them they have to wait.

jordan leopold is a good example. he stayed in school in hopes of winning a national championship with his buddies he grew up with, and played with/against. i dont know about JJs situation, but looking at U Michigans roster they are just like the U Minnesota. Most of the players are from Michigan, so he likely grew up playing against or with most of them aswell.
