Is there anything he CAN'T do...

Recommended Posts

Apparantly, while playing in a charity Golf Tournament today, Alex the Gr8 (thanks CCM) aced a hole. No details on the distance or club he used.

It was the closing piece on TSN's That's Hockey tonight. No video.

He was at the hole all day, playing it with every group that came through, so kept getting closer and closer, then finally got it in.

Oh...didn't know that...thought it was as part of the regular round.

dosen't matter, you could play the same hole for a month straight and never hit a hole in one. You have to be good, but you have to be lucky too.

True...

As someone who has never hit a hole in one, I would imagine it would be significantly more likely for someone to hit a hole in one on a hole if they had been practicing on it all day, as opposed to someone's first time. Club selection, pin placement, slope of the green, wind, etc. are all things that if someone was familiar with and could adjust to properly, would make a hole in one (or even just a good shot) much more likely to happen.

You guys are acting like any golfer could get on a course and, given enough time and study, could hit a hole in one...

It's an insane feet, props to Ovechkin, luck, practice or otherwise.

Uh no. Read what I said again. All I was implying is that it would be more likely to occur if someone was very familiar with the hole. I in no way said that it was easy or anything of the such. But at the same time, why is it unreasonable to think that with practice and study a hole in one isn't possible? Do you think that a hole in one is all luck? Who has more holes in one in their life, you or Tiger Woods? I know a few people who suck at golfing who have gotten lucky with getting a hole in one, but that doesn't mean that they have as good of a chance of getting one as a better golfer.

I agree...but looking at his practice swings, I think he was focused 100% on just hitting the ball. :-)

Yes, Ovechkin obviously was able to calculate all the variables of wind speed and direction, pin placement, and hardness of the green to get himself that hole in one. Those missed attempts to hit the ball weren't misses, in fact, he felt subtle wind shifts while starting his downswing and aborted those swings.

You're an idiot.

You're trying to tell us that Ovechkin figured out the hole and I'm the idiot??????

I don't know if you golf or not (you probably just act like you do for argument's sake), but imagine stepping onto the teebox of a par 3, 155 yard hole. There is a trap directly in front of the green so you can't see the exact pin location. 155 yards is right between a 7 and an 8 iron for you, so you don't know which club to hit. The trees down near the hole are blowing, but you can't feel any wind where you are. Are you going to say that you're first shot is always going to be as good as any subsequent shot? I never said luck wasn't involved, because it isn't. Its ridiculous to think though that a hole in one is 100% luck.

i agree. it takes skill to get a hole in 1. its hard enough for a person who rarely plays golf to get par, let alone a hole in 1.

i dont know if ovechkin frequently plays golf, but 160 yard par 3 isnt a very long hole, and if you try multiple times and make it to the green it is possible that you can get a hole in 1. yes it takes a little luck for the balll to go in the hole, but you have to get it near the hole first.

Skill is the ability to repeatedly hit the ball on the green.

More exceptional skill might be adding backspin to get it to roll even closer to the hole.

Luck is almost certainly invloved in getting it to actually roll into the hole with one stroke.

Judging by his swing (and I don't know any more that I saw in the vid)...his hole in one was more luck than skill...like 90%+ luck. :D

But then again...show me he can at least hit it on the green consistently...and my 90% drops way down.

DID YOU WATCH THE VIDEO?!? What skill? The guy looked like he was trying to jump-rope, do lunges and hit a baseball all at the same time. I'm pretty sure they said it was his first time playing.

Ovechkin's hole-in-one was some of the most brutal luck I've ever seen.

As for your question, if I'm any good at the game, yes, my first shot will be just as good as any subsequent shot I take on that hole.

You know, if you watch the video, technically it was not a hole-in-one. He addressed the ball, then swung and completely missed. Since he addressed the ball, this is not considered a practice swing. So, technically, this was just a birdie.

...I believe he was just on the range when he whiffed. They didn't show the swing that resulted in the ace.
