The Departed

Recommended Posts

Speaking of good movies featuring actors who we, in the past, hadn't liked much, if at all, I have to throw 'Lucky Number Slevin' out there.  Outside of 'Blackhawk Down,' I can't say that I have been impressed by anything featuring Josh Hartnett.  'Lucky Number Slevin,' though, was one of the best movies I have seen in awhile.  I would definitely recommend it.

I liked it. Pretty good flick but the first first 40 or so minutes drove me crazy with that overly snappy, over-written dialogue. It tried to be too funny in the begining and that annoyed me. Aside from that, the movie as a whole was good though.

Revenge movies are great because they give you a license to just tear shit up and usually have a basic yet coherent plot (Kill Bill, Man On Fire, Crank (haha)). You come into the movie knowing what to expect. They're the only "action" movies I can really watch anymore.

I loved the ending. Paybacks a bitch! B)

Really? I thought the ending was the worst part of the movie.

I was so pissed that he played him.(dicaprio) So i wanted to get him back. I dont know i was so happy he killed him. The douchebag deserved it. Justice served.

I loved Shaun of the Dead.

same here... it pays homeage to my favorite zombie flicks...

Anyways... being a life long native of Boston, Massachusetts... I've been trying to get to see The Departed... but I can't do it when the accents get extremely over the top... I really do try people, to not speak with a heavy New England accent. I've also heard the really crowed theatres in the area get their own "Boston commentary" like "Hey! I've been there!!" yeah, who hasn't?! I don't want stuff like that to ruin my viewing experience. So I'll give it a few more weeks

Good Will Hunting left me in the theater saying "Oh c'mon, it wasn't that bad!"

Matt Damon's and Mark Wahlberg's accents were totally fake.

I've been wanting to see those IA movies but I hear this version may have trumped the original. Either way, if there's even an argument for how good the original is I want to see it.

Edit: Damn, we need a spoilers part for it so we can actually discuss parts of the movie. At least the quotes though, any line from Wahlberg and Baldwin are gold.

Unfortunately, the Alec Baldwin and Marky Mark characters weren't in IA (or at least not nearly as comic relief-y), if I recall correctly. In my opinion that's the single best touch they added to the original.

A lot of reviewers make mention of how larger-than-life Jack Nicholson was and how they beefed up the role of his character for him. While Nicholson is entertaining and intimidating in his portrayal, playing the role so crazy menacingly also completely removed a dimension of the character and story that Eric Tsang brought to IA.

The Nicholson sort of ruined the movie for me. I thought it was a great plot, amazing acting from Leo, Damon was a meh but his character wasn't that important. Jack was way too upbeat and didn't fit the gangster role. Pacino, De Niro, Pesci or even Liotta would have been more of a convincing character then Jack.

Damon and Wahlberg were born in Cambridge and Dorchester, Mass. How could their accents be fake? I don't even think they were trying to have accents, they just talked like they did while growing up.

I do have a demographical question for those of us not from that part of the country. What is the demographical break down for Boston and their suburbs? What ethnic groups live in which locagions of the city? In particular, the northern end. Is that where the wealthy reside? How accurate of a portrayal is it of Boston and the area? Also, do they really have different accents for different parts of the city?

It came out on DVD today. Just finished watching it. I'm watching it again with my mom tomorrow. Definitely one of those movies that is just as good, if not better the second time.

The asian version was really good. I'm a little afraid to watch this version because I don't want to be disappointed. Do you guys think they're gonna make the sequel and prequel to this movie like the asian film?

well, I just saw it for the first time last night... I picked it up on DVD.

Being a native for all 29 years of my life- I can agree with someone who posted earlier... I found it hilarious that both Wahlberg, and Damon are from Massachusetts... yet Leo's accent was the most accurate. Wahlberg and Damon were just too "over the top" with the accents... the same thing bugged the hell out of me with "Good Will Hunting", just a little too much.

And Mack, I know where the pic came from... but after seeing the movie, you made a wonderful choice for your avitar! haha "I'm the guy who does his job... you must be the other guy"

and I've heard on a few radio stations they do have plans for the prequel/sequel.

Like someone on extras of the dvd said, "If you're not from here, you don't understand". The sheer mystique of organized crime lords in Boston is unreal. You can walk the streets, and everyone has a "Whitey Bulger" story.. some being frightening, some laughable. But the film is very accurate, and if you pick up the DVD it's got some great features. In the short time this particular version has existed, you wouldn't even grasp how passionate the people of Boston are about this film. I literally had to go to 6 different stores to pickup a copy yesterday.

The North End, in the 20th century has become predominantly Italian.. it's basically Boston's "little Italy", nowadays it's lots of exquisite dining, etc.

Beacon Hill is basically wealthy, white, upper class Boston. Brick sidewalks, gas-lit lighting, and some of the highest property value in the United States. Damon's apartment view of the capital building pretty much hits the nail on the head.

South Boston, or "Southie" is predominantly Irish.. in it's day it had quite a reputation for drugs, and street crime

Dorchester, also represented in the movie is nowadays a very diverse, and working class community. Irish, African American, and Asian communities are spread throughout the neighborhoods of Dorchester. Similar to South Boston, it also has a reputation for drugs, and crime, etc.

....and Providence, Rhode Island as referred to in the film, well- most make it a point to not mess around with Providence, haha.

The sequel sounds like a bad idea. Wahlberg's in, they're talking about bringing Robert DeNiro in but there can't be Scorsese since it'd break his no sequels rule. I'd like it to do well because if it does well, they'd bring everyone back for a prequel.

Why because he is not playing the steriotypcial Italian crime boss role? The Departed was based on the Irish mafia, and every actor you named in the previous post played an italian mobster. Why should he have played a downbeat hardass if that wasnt what was in the script? What gangsters do you personally know that make you believe that you know how Jack should have acted? You are basing your opinion on other movies, which are irrelevant. All that aside, Nichilson played Nicholson, which he has played in every movie for the past 20 years

I'm just glad they didn't delve into all the bisexual activities of the character they based Nicholson's character on.

well, I personally think Jack works just fine... the peculiar behavior, etc. fits in perfectly with a lot of the "urban legend" you hear about Bulger in the immediate area...

That's honestly the first person I've said who not only didn't like him/his character, but actually disliked him. When I saw this last week at a theatre/pub the audience loved him, notably when he does the rat face.
